High Sierra Mayhem Backpack

I compared 4 High Sierra backpack models: Mayhem (this model), Neo High Sierra Neo Backpack,AccessHigh Sierra Access Backpack, and Incline High Sierra Incline Backpack. I'm a 5'2" woman. For my uses (carryon for travel/day hikes), I selected the Neo model, but this model was a close second. If they'd change the yoke style shoulder straps to 2 single shoulder straps, offer it in the Purple print, add a back access zipper, make shoulder pouch larger, and eliminate the rivets, it would be a perfect pack. The Yoke style straps tend to dig into the back of my neck unless I keep the pack at a lower position. All 4 packs had tags indicating that they could hold a 17" laptop. The Access and Incline could not hold my Dell 17" Inspiron, but this one could. All 4 packs had pouches in the shoulder straps. The only pack that could hold my iphone in an otterbox case was the Neo model. Three of the models including this one, had a larger and probably more durable zippers than the Incline model. The padding on the bottom seems the same on all models. The raincover on the Access provides some extra padding when the raincover is in the hidden pouch. The padding on the backs of the packs seem to be about the same. I didn't use the packs, so I can't comment on the ventilation/airflow materials at the back of the packs.

One Strap for attaching accessories to the front of the pack

Front pocket with clip holds one 16-20 oz bottle or 1000 ml nalgene bottle. Easy in and out.

2 zippered side pockets. Can hold one 16-20 oz bottle in each.

Lots of space in this pack. My measurements are 19.5x13.5x10 = 2632 cu in. Less space than the Neo

Cons:

Comes only in purple, not purple print fabric (very nice) like other models

Yoke style straps dig into the back of my neck. This model has straps that are further apart, so less comfortable for a smaller person.

Pouch on shoulder strap (5"x3") fits iphone without case, not with case.

Does not have Back access zipper for getting laptop in/out of pack

Has decorative rivets on pack. Concerned that they will catch on something and put hole in pack or rip fabric.

Arrived quickly, perfect for what I needed for College. Bag is made well and helps my ridiculously heavy books not feel so heavy! :)

This is a great backpack. It distributes the weight so that it doesn't hurt my shoulders. The only thing it's missing is a bottle holder, otherwise it is fantastic.

Got 2 of these for my children. One is in high school and the other is in jr high! Very large, holds alot-kids love them. Lots of space! This will last them into college.

I pack my workout clothes, books, notebooks, pencils, paper, tablet (though it would readily accommodate a laptop), graphing calculator, and I still have pockets for more! Backpack has a great fit for riding my bicycle or walking, fits comfortably. The only thing I would design better is the shoulder-strap tightening system; the end of the straps just dangle with no good place to secure them. A very minor flaw given the price and quality of the backpack.
