Targus Coastal TSB19501US Nylon Notebook Backpack - Fits up to 16" (Black/Magenta)

Targus Coastal TSB19501US Nylon Notebook Backpack - Fits up to 16'I received this item today and found it's quality to be underwhelming. It is inexpensively made with almost no protective padding. The laptop compartment has some thin padding where the backpack rests against the users back and a spongy double mesh lining bag/pocket which serves as a laptop compartment. This would probably offer some resistance to scratching but no protection from a bump. To the backpacks credit, it is more refined looking than a generic department store student backpack selling in the same price range but overall, almost as poorly padded. The magenta trim is not bad although in my opinion, a tad feminine. The bag seems well stitched and it is feather light, but not necessarily in a good way. The zippers actually look to be a little higher quality than the run of the mill discount store bag.

I'm going to offer the bag to my wife as a general tote but unless she wants it, I'm going try to send it back. It is a fair representation of what I would have expected in its price category. I have bought really decent Targus bags in the $25 to $35 price range but this is not anything that I would trust to carry a laptop in.

My wife indicated that she wanted the bag. We later spent a few days playing tourist in New Orleans where she used it as a general tote to hold tourist information, snacks and personal effects. She said she was pleased with it. She liked the way it looked and appreciated it's feather weight. So, the moral of the story is, it depends on what one wants to do with the bag. My original impression is unchanged, I wouldn't carry a notebook or tablet in it. If you like ample padding around your gear this bag is not for you.
