Case Logic DLBP-116 16-Inch Laptop Backpack (Black)

I've never enjoyed a backpack this much. In fact, I moved to messenger-style bags a while ago after finding backpacks uncomfortable. However, Case Logic really put some thought into this one, which you will notice the first time you put it on with something heavy inside. The straps are padded, wide, and contoured to balance the weight of the pack very nicely, using either one or both shoulder straps. A top handle is included as well, which is nice if I want to pick it up quickly to grab something.

In terms of size, it is somewhere between the monster packs that allow you to tote around many college textbooks and the dainty packs that just fit a laptop. You can probably get away with fitting in two big textbooks, along with a chunky laptop and accessories. I also keep an umbrella inside and it fits perfectly. The many pockets are arranged well to maximize the space, too. A padded pocket is included for glasses or scratchable gear and there are drink pockets on the side that also work for pens or thumb drives -anything small that might be a pain to dig around for in the big pockets.

I've waited a long time to do this review, waiting for a zipper to pull off or a strap to shred, but it still looks new. I think it is fair to say that Case Logic makes products that are hit or miss. This is a hit.

Edit: Just wanted to note that the felt padded pocket perfectly fits the 3DS. It's a nice way to carry it around for Streetpass.

First off, this backpack will keep your laptop and various peripherals intact. There is a great amount of protection built it. There are, as others have noted, some pockets for other small things that you may wish to carry. However, this backpack is a very poor choice for anyone who wants to carry anything substantial, other than a laptop. Mostly I'm thinking of students. A lot of students (like myself) carry a laptop and a lot of books to class everyday and there's just not enough room for what I need to bring with me. There are other alternatives with more storage for big items (Jan Sport and Victorinox both have good options), so I would recommend looking elsewhere.

If all you're looking to do is carry a laptop and a few small things, I would additionally caution you that the design is very boxy and unappealing from an aesthetic standpoint. It's just kind of bland, square, and unimpressive. Yes, this probably isn't a big factor to everyone, but it will be to some people. With such elegant options out there, Case Logic should have stepped up their game.

Finally, contrary to the other rave reviews, I don't expect this to hold up to much stress. I have a Victorinox backpack made of ballistic nylon with triple-stitched seams. It has taken a beating, but is still going strong ten years later. This Case Logic backpack has no real reinforcement. Best case scenario, the backpack lasts until your laptop is out of date (i.e. a year or two). It just doesn't look like it's ready for the sustained abuse of real life.

Overall, this backpack will keep your laptop safe. It succeeds at its fundamental task. I just don't feel like it's a very strong contender with the wealth of available options that do exactly the same thing, but better.

Life is Good!

Without this selection from Vine, I would probably never have gotten myself a backpack like this. While I have a laptop, I seldom, have almost never, taken it out of the house with me. Additionally, I guess I always felt that these things were for kids and yuppie-types (imagine)! (I'm 63, by the way!)

Now, things have Changed! I LOVE this pack, and it has been "traveling" with me a lot since my U**man delivered it! It's so much more fun now to go to the coffeeshop(s) and use wifi to surf and work, and also when I visit the library....I cannot believe what I have been missing out on for the easy availability that I could have had to check things while I have been away from home!

As others here have noted, there are certainly pockets enough for just about anything you would with to "have with you". While I wear glasses, so don't ever carry sunglasses, I do need computer glasses, and so even that pocket is great for me and serves a very useful purpose.

I cannot gripe about anything regarding this product. It is light, it is 100% totally functional for anything that I could possibly imagine anyone would want to use it for from the gym, school, trips to the mall or wherever, even an afternoon on a bench in the park with lunch and a drink and a book you've brought with you, and if it gets cooler, you could put on your sweater or lightweight jacket you packed "just in case"!

This is easily one of the handiest and most useful/practical acquisitions to have entered my house and life in a very very long time.

You will not be disappointed with this well-made, durable, and lightweight pack.

Price wise this is a good backpack, but not a good backpack for a laptop. There is zero padding in the bottom of this pack and a small amount against the laptop on the inside. If you were to drop this pack with a laptop in it, there is no protection. It's a good pack for books or any small items, but I wouldn't haul around a piece of equipment you care about when flying, as it offers no protection. Now I knew the price was a great deal, and it's obvious why, since it really is just a backpack for non breakable items.

PROS:

Plenty of room for the laptop, accessories, and even a change of clothes or two. LOTS of pockets for extra storage.

Nicely padded at impact points. I put my reading glasses in the upper pocket and they came along for the ride just fine. Good padding at the bottom of the laptop compartment means a snug fit for your computer.

Two handles, one at the top and one on the face of the case give you the option of carrying either way for comfort or utility. Fully adjustable back straps have plenty of play and should fit just about anyone.

We've used several different laptop carry cases over the years, from the basic laptop sleeve to the expensive and somewhat bulky Tenba messenger/shoulder bag, and this backpack looks like it might get the most use out of all of them. I might not throw any of our digital SLRs in this bag like I would the Tenba, but for the laptop alone, it's a really good option.

CONS:

Can't really think of any major drawbacks at this point. I'll update the review if we encounter any issues with the bag, but for now I'm writing it down as a definite win.
