Kelty Avocet 30 Daypack

Kelty Avocet 30 DaypackI wanted a well built rucksack without a lot of fiddly pockets and zippers and attachy clips that I could use as both a carry on bag for air travel, and that I could use on my bike for quick runs to the store. This light weight rucksack fits the bill. I have used it for business travel, and was able to fit everything I needed for a 6 day trip into it. It carries well, and fits into the overhead compartment of an airliner with no problem. The cinch straps on the outside allow you to make it into a tight little bundle; and the sholder straps are wide and confortable whether you carry it on your back using both straps, or just sling it over one sholder. The chest strap does not ride up to high, and when you use both the chest strap and the waist strap the pack rides snugly with no shifting when it is full of a load of groceries while ridding a bike. This is a well built, and versital rucksack which is worth the money.

I used this pack as a light crag pack. It held my harness, a small rack (draws, small/midsize cams, nuts), and water pretty easily. Never had any gear fall out or feel insecure. Stored rope in the top flap and secured the ends in the ice axe loops. Really wish it would have had two pieces of webbing to close the top flap (if it did I'd probably still be using it as my main pack today), but one works fine if you don't need to hold anything like rope in it. Not sure what the previous reviewer was talking about, the top loader cinches very tight if the pack is not overloaded.

The thing that does bother me is that there are no water bottle pockets, and only one tiny space for non-top loading gear. It also doesn't have a bottom access zipper, which sucks if you have a lot of stuff in your pack. However, it is pretty rugged and works great for a day pack if you don't care about instant access to your supplies.

Just recieved my. Out of the box it looked fine, nice size, not too many extra 'staps'. MAJOR problem, no pockets or zippers to keep things in like... well, coins, glasses, wallets, passport... just about anything smaller than a grapefruit. Drawstring top does close but will let anything smaller than that grapefruit fall out if it is turned upside down or perhaps even sideways. Most backpacks overdue the straps and zippers but this one is at the other extreme. Like yer pants........ if you wanna leave the house, you should have a zipper on it. Ok, at least one. Not even ONE external pocket. No bottle holder. One indoor 'sleeve' for a netbook or something flat. Very limited function. Even many rucksacks have a pocket of some sort. I guess it's good for taking your laundry to the laundrymat on a bicycle and...... well, that's about it.

(ooops...... saw a video on Youtube on this pack after posting the review. There IS one zipper pocket in the hood that covers the top of the pack. Decent size, but not easy to find. Maybe that's a good thing? Just upgraded to three stars from two.....
