Le Donne Leather Distressed Leather Computer Backpack

Le Donne Leather Distressed Leather Computer BackpackI gave this item as a graduation gift. I have received very good feedback from the recipient. I would recommend it to anyone.

I absolutely love this bag. It looks even better than in the picture. Sure $115 is a bit pricey for a backpack, but the genuine distressed leather and durable spacious craftsmanship is really worth every penny. I can not only fit several textbooks, notebooks, binder, and laptop, but the large side pockets even let me keep snacks for on the go munching between classes. I do have to say that it is a little wider than most backpacks, but not wide enough to look odd or overwhelming. I recommend this bag to anyone looking for a great leather backpack that will last them a while.

Gave this to my daughter for use at college. Well crafted leather bag that is a good size. Big enough for an average size laptop computer and enough room and additional pockets for folders, a few books and other stuff. The leather appears to be high quality and I think it's going to be one of those bags that looks even better with use as the leather gets more character. My one remark is that the shoulder straps are not padded, but the back of the pack is. Regardless, she's very happy with it....

The measurements advertised are to tight. In reality it is not distresses leather, it is a kind of nubuck; the problem is that it cames without any protective coat and get stains with everithing including rain

Maxpedition COCOON POUCH

Maxpedition COCOON POUCHThe Maxpedition Cocoon Pouch is an excellent modular add on accessory that will fit well on any Alice/MOLLE compatible product such as a backpack, water bottle holder, Gearslinger, etc.

The Cocoon is a utility pouch that comes with a very durable full length zipper. It is 2 inches in diameter x 8 inches long. You can use a 3 inch TacTie (sold separately) and the SlikClip is included.

Often times I will utilize two Cocoon Pouches: one dedicated to fire and one dedicated to food/water products.

Examples:

Cocoon Pouch for fire: contents include a Swedish Firesteel Army Model, petroleum cotton balls, water proof matches, Ultimate Survival Wet Fire Tinder and a lighter. Sometimes I will throw in Magnesium. Yes, multiple methods of starting a fire is important.

Cocoon Pouch for water/food: contents include a spork or other eating utensils, Aquamira Frontier Emergency Water Filter System, water purification tablets and an energy bar.

There are plenty of uses for the Maxpedition Cocoon Pouch. Another great Maxpedition product.

I use this to carry my pens, pencils, highlighters, markers, and other writing supplies. It's the perfect length and shape for them. (In terms of volume, it's easily large enough for a dozen ballpoint pens, but probably not large enough to accommodate a dozen Sharpie markers.)

Another necessary item for your EDC pack. I have one now with implements for fire starting, and will get a second one for water purification.

I use 2 of these with my Maxpedition bottle holder. I keep paracord in them and they work great. These make a great addition to a survival set up using the bottle holder.

As small as this item is, is expands like a mini duffel bag to hold whatever you might throw in it. The bottom of the inside is flat and lined with a tough, rubbery lining like the outside bottom of some of Maxped's backpacks. This is a great size for an add-on for quick-use items like a headlamp and some batteries, since it isn't noticable and can hold quite a bit.

Jansport All Nighter Backpack

Jansport All Nighter BackpackI use this to carry my laptop in since it's too big to fit cuter bags. The shoulder straps aren't the most comfortable but it works from walking to my dorm to the library. All the zippers are good and have worked since I bought it (over a year ago).

Osprey Metron 25-Litre Commuter Pack

Osprey Metron 25-Litre Commuter PackThis is my 2nd bike-commuting-specific backpack. My first was a Banjo Brothers Backpack which while waterproof was just bulky and awkward and had only a single large pocket.

This pack is far superior to that pack and also to every other general backpack I've owned.

Pros:

Comfortable weight distribution it packs more vertically than it does outwards which distributes the weight much more evenly when you are riding.

Laptop section I work in IT and am a grad student so I haul my laptop everywhere. Having a dedicated padding slot for it just makes things easier for me

Pockets Main pocket holds laptop and lunch etc, but there is also a slightly smaller outer pocket that has slots for pens and a key fob

Light clip pretty standard on a cycling pack but I still love the feature

Rain Cover! So awesome. I think it's much better than having an awkward waterproof pack. Just include the rain fly right in! And you don't even have to remember to bring it since it's built-in. It's been tested in plenty of storms I've ridden through and I've never had any problems.

Cons:

Hip straps are kinda cheap? But they do the job and are removable, so it's not even much of a con

No water/coffee pocket I just use the Ulock pocket, but it's annoying they don't have one

The pouches on the straps annoyed me at first, but now I use them for phone and keys and find it more of a 'pro' now than a 'con' but I also don't care about looking cool so others may consider this more of a serious con.

Conclusion:

If you're looking for a quality pack for your commute, even a regular commute but especially if you're commuting by bicycle, this could be a wonderful pack for you. Unlike the previous reviewer I find it quite compact especially compared to other bike-commuter backpacks on the market. If you're used to a messenger bag or a non-commuting bicycle pack like a Camelback style, though, then it may seem bulkier.

I bought this backpack for a trip to Germany in the summer. The last backpack I took over there was not very good and I vowed to buy a better backpack for next time. First off, you can't go wrong with Osprey brand. I own a messenger bag, a hiking backpack and now this backpack I will use on my travels. I put my bags through a lot and they have never failed. It's a great investment. Now to the bag. Very sturdy material. It has more packets than expected. That means less time spent while searching for that thing you just put in your pack 5 minutes ago. There is lots of space in this bag. The pictures on here and the Osprey site really don't do this bag any justice. One of the main reasons I bought this bag was because it has a rain cover. This is a must if you carry cameras and camera accessories like I do. It folds up nice and out of the way. Another cool feature is the way the bag is designed. The few pockets on the outside of the bag are hard to see and actually look like the design of the bag. This means less chance of someone trying to steal something from your bag. I am very pleased with my purchase and I am excited to try it out in Germany and France. I gave it a few test runs at home and I am confident it will work to my advantage.

Although I should write more I will just say the following.

Construction and materials are excellent

Some of the features are useful (removable straps)

Great cellphone/music player pouch

Ultimately I didn't find this to be much better than my $50 Burton pack and returned the Osprey. The backpack is inefficient in some respects. It was supposed to be my largest pack but was never big enough to fit many groceries and therefore didn't fit that build. As a smaller commuter pack it was way too bulk for a clean shirt and lunch.

If the size is right for you, you should love this. Again the construction is excellent and materials are exceptional.

Read Best Reviews of Osprey Metron 25-Litre Commuter Pack Here

I read a previous review before buying which said good bag but the pockets on the shoulder straps are irritating. Ignored that in favour of other positive reviews.

I have to say, however, that the pockets on the shoulder straps are very irritating. One is supposed to carry keys on a retractable lanyard, the other your mobile phone/ipod. Good idea, but they are mounted so high that when you carry the pack over one shoulder, you have one of these pockets sticking in to the underside of your neck. Only when you mount the bag with all straps, including the chest strap in place do they sit away from your face. Even then they are obtrusive, sticking out from your upper chest.

I am seriously considering cutting them off, preferring a scrappy looking shoulder strap to the current poor function.

Rest of bag is great quality make and thoughtful distribution of pockets and straps etc. Which makes the pocket thing even more irritating.

Want Osprey Metron 25-Litre Commuter Pack Discount?

Great design and extremely comfortable I hardly know I'm wearing it on long commutes. The attention to detail and finish is excellent. All in all a great backpack that I would recommend to any commuter.

Timbuk2 Q Laptop Backpack

Timbuk2 Q Backpack, Gunmetal/Blue/Black, MediumI purchased the Timbuk2 Q in black (w/ neon yellow logo, not the black and pink version pictured here) and have been using it for about 1 month.

I am very happy with this purchase and will recommend others to purchase this bag for daily commute with a limited number of things to carry. If you need to bring gym shoes and other large items, consider the Timbuk2 H.A.L.

Simple Black with Neon Yellow Logo:

I have the black with neon yellow logo version in this version everything is black, inside/outside the only thing not black is the logo. Simple and no non-sense. The green combo looks pretty cool too, but I wanted something that can pass more professionally. I think the pink and black combo is new. For a limited time (December 2009) the brown version is on sale for $65 on the timbuk2 site.

Slim Size with Medium Capacity:

This is a mid size-slim pack. Does not look bulky at all and very comfortable even when stuffed. I generally use this pack for heading out to a coffee shop to study or general run around campus/school day. I generally only bring a laptop, power brick, personal items, a pair of large over the ear headphones, 2 novel sized books, and maybe a portfolio with some papers in there. It can hold more stuff, but if you have to carry a pair of shoes or large science text books this pack might be too small. Consider this pack a day pack where you can carry a laptop and some work with you but dont bet on bringing the text books from all your classes.

Laptop Compartment for 13" to 15" laptops:

13" laptops generally require medium size and up Timbuk2 bags. In this case I have a 13" intel macbook with room to spare in the laptop compartment. Once you zip up the compartment the laptop stays put so its doesnt flop or bounce around. I have read about people with 15" macbook pros and they say that its a bit tight but nevertheless fits in the laptop compartment. There is a "padding" at the bottom of the laptop compartment perhaps intended for extra protection but it shifts and moves I suspect when the compartment is zipped up it stays put. The zipper might be hard to get to when you swing the bag around, I still think its very convenient to get to the laptop and appreciate the swig around-ness.

Main Compartment:

Double zipper allowing you to position it for swing around access (positioned on the side) or at the top. This is a fairly deep compartment and will take to shoving of items pretty well. If you dont have much items or the pack is not very full things will fall to/bunch at the bottom.

Front Power Brick Pocket:

Fits a mac brick w/ or w/o extension cable and perhaps other small items as well. I use this pocket to hold an umbrella on rainy days so nothing else gets rained on as I scramble for the umbrella. The pocket tapers making for a "vertical" messenger bag feel and perhaps also for swing around access. Note when packing This pocket is not gusseted so it will take up space (although as a separate partition) from the main compartment.

"Command Center" Compartment:

This is the smaller compartment which is like the flap of a messenger bag. There are lots of organization pockets in there but I would like to see more organization pockets in the main compartment. there is a "divider" that separates about 1/2 the compartment holding everything else in this allows for more stashing and not worrying about things falling out when you unzip. This is usually the space I have the most stuff jammed in (I have many small items hence I dont place them in the main compartment). When stuffed this space will press against the main compartment and act as a compression to hold things in the main compartment in place.

Swing Around Access:

Start practicing! When on the go you can swing the pack and get to things you need without taking off the whole pack. One side targets getting to your laptop compartment and front pocket, swing to the the other side for the main, power brick, and command center compartments.

When holding this pack by the side it looks like a messenger bag and you can easily access the command center or main compartment (both equipped with double zippers). As you carry the bag on its side the back straps dangle and cannot be hidden (tripping over the straps might be of concern for shorter people like me).

Oh yes, and a water proof bottom, exterior and zippers (well as water proof as zippers can be) resisting water is a staple of Timbuk2 products.

Update Jan. 10th

Fabric update -

Timbuk2 started using the super light weight "Mission6 Nylon Fabric" for the newer color combos including the Black/Pink combo. The "first" gen bags like the Brown/Black combo, black & yellow swirly, and dark/light green are made of Timbuk2's signature ballistic nylon.

I love bags, and particularly Timbuk2 bags. My wife and I have four between us, and they get a lot of of use, as everything from diaper bags to briefcases. Recently, I bought a Q laptop backpack because heavy shoulder bags were making me sore and uncomfortable, and the Arc'teryx Blade 15 that I tried didn't work (see my review of that bag for why).

The size and design of the Q are great. It even passes decently as a briefcase, which is nice for a lawyer and frequent presenter.

The problem is in the laptop compartment. As you can see in the picture I uploaded, the pad that is supposed to cushion the computer slides out of the way. It's easy to see why. Balancing a cube on a cylinder is inherently unstable, like logrolling. The pad is too stiff to do anything but slide out of the way. The unfortunate result is an uncomfortable ridge across my lower back, and the bag fails at the main thing it is supposed to do: protect my laptop.

I contacted Timbuk2 about the problem, and they said they know about the problem, but don't have a revised backpack available. They sent a couple of strap pads with the idea that I could shove them in there and make it work. So far, they are just making the problem worse.

While I love this bag, the fact that it fails at its primary purpose is a huge disappointment, and nearly a dealbreaker. I'm not sending it back; instead, I'm learning to constantly readjust my laptop. However, I am hoping Timbuk2 will fix the laptop pad problem and exchange my bag for the fixed version.

Commuting between NYC and Stamford, CT has really done a number on my shoulders as cute as my shoulder bags are. And while traveling, I finally twisted my right shoulder and said enough. I needed something that was still stylish but got the job done and would let my shoulder heal.

This Timbuk2 bag had exactly what I was looking for in a commute bag:

* stylish and sturdy

* small enough not to dwarf a 5'2" female

* big enough to fit my laptop, a couple of books, day-to-day gear and lunch (but if I bring breakfast and heels, I need another bag)

It was doing such a good job, that I decided to test it as my carry-on on a week-long business trip. Because some international flights back to the US are only allowing 1 carry-on/person, I was careful with what I packed. Result = fantastic!

* laptop compartment made it easy to pull out computer for security screening

* small pocket in the back was just the right size for my US currency and credit cards that I wouldn't need overseas but would at the US airports

* bottom compartment fit charger, mouse, and number pad

* main compartment fit 2 textbooks, a notebook, hat, mittens and some food for the plane

* everything else fit in the front compartment

Not to say there aren't any cons, but I think they're minor:

* there are certainly situations when I need more space (as mentioned above). also my duty-free purchases were not going to fit in the bag with everything else I packed

* lint also sticks to this thing like crazy, so be prepared.

* if you get the white/gunmetal/red combo, be prepared that things show through the white cover, so not a good place for sensitive materials/items

* the white material will obviously stain more quickly than some other colors. A Tide-To-Go stick in your bag might be handy if stains will bother you

Overall, I couldn't be more happy with how versatile this pack has been. It's more than worth the money.

It's a good bag, it has a lot of pockets and different spaces that you can use. However, it is not very big or comfortable. If you have a laptop in the laptop section it kind of restricts what you can take in the book section.

If you are a college or high school student and you need to carry a bunch of books and things with you, there are probably better choices out there with more space and that are more comfortable. If you are just a day to day user who just needs a nice laptop bag with a little more space, then this is probably for you.

Hope this helps.

Want Timbuk2 Q Laptop Backpack Discount?

I'm starting law school in the fall, so I needed a backpack that could withstand some abuse. I was looking for one that is relatively small, but with a large carrying capacity. I also wanted one with tons of pockets, because I love to keep things organized. I spent months (yes, I'm a huge dork) searching for the perfect backpack, and I ended up deciding on this. My final choices were a Dakine Prom Pack, The Brain Bag by Tom Bihn, Timbuk2 HAL and the Timbuk2 Q. Obviously, I chose the Q. It had the best reviews (I also went to Timbuk's website), it came in a color I liked--brown, and it wouldn't drown me in size. Once it arrived, I knew I had made the right choice. When I packed it full to capacity, it was still light on my back, because of the support strap across the front. It can fit everything I would need: all the contents of my purse, my laptop, my laptop cord, a huge textbook, a three-ring binder, three folders, and around a dozen pens/pencils. It might be a little small in size if you are a big guy. I had my husband try it on, and it looked tiny on him. But for a woman around 5'6'', it's perfect.

Toshiba 10.1-Inch Netbook Black Soft Sleeve

Toshiba 10.1-Inch Netbook Black Soft SleeveI like to have all of my equipement match so when I bought a new Toshiba Netbook I added this sleeve to my order. My experience with all things Toshiba is that you will get a nice product and a fair price. This sleeve is perfect for maintaining the small size of the netbook. But it is not a super protective case so if you want to protect your netbook from banging around you should get a larger case too. I did take my netbook through airport security and left it in this case and they did not have me take it out so that I really appreciated. For hand carry with caution this fits the bill nicely. As far as carry cases that are more protective I prefer the brand INCASE but so far I have not found a netbook over the shoulder bag for a netbook. The Incase bag I have for my Toshiba notebook is fantastic, sleek, good looking, and nicely padded.

I bought this for my wife when I bought her the Toshiba netbook. She loved the case until it started literally coming apart at the seams. She is very easy on anything she uses so it was not because of heavy usage or not being careful. I guess you really get what you pay for. Do not buy this product if you want it to last more that a few months.

Buy Toshiba 10.1-Inch Netbook Black Soft Sleeve Now

I bought this for protecting my Toshiba netbook when I put it in my backpack or briefcase, and it works well for that use. It's not the most heavy duty fabric, but it's nicely padded and seems fairly durable for normal usage. I chose the Toshiba brand sleeve so it would fit my Toshiba netbook snugly, and it is a snug fit. I think there might some sleeves that are a little cheaper, but I wanted to make sure it would be a good fit.

Yes it's a sleeve. Yes the Toshiba net book will fit in it. But what else does it do? It won't save you if you drop the unit. No room for the ac adapter.. (Yes I forgot about that when I ordered) Just seems like a waste of $10.

Recycled Jute Rice Bag Backpack Hand Made Nepal

Recycled Jute Rice Bag Backpack Hand Made NepalI own many of these backpacks from DharmaObjects company in different styles. Backpack is large and made of a burlap which has been color dyed and its also lined with cotton fabric made in Nepal and has wooden button toggles and a sinch of a rope cord. Super big and nice for the price and so vibrant in color I LOVE these things as they are so kitchy/hippy. Great for a gift which I also gave one of them for. I am so happy I located them recently. Each design will be unique as fabric varies but its very colorful and nicely made. Something you just cannot find at an ordinary department store as each is handmade. I LOVE this item so it gets 10 stars ( 5 is the highest here but deserves 10 ) There are 2 adjustable straps and 3 exterior pockets. Its adult size and unisex color/fabric. Very Very COOL.

PS I wouldnt suggest hauling super heavy items or prolonged water exposure if walking as its made of jute/burlap 100% natural.

Bought this for college (I'm a sophomore and usually put a max of 3 notebooks and 2 smaller books in it) it carried boxed wine a few times also comfortably. Love the bag, it came pretty fast and as soon as i opened it i knew i loved it, and it still smelled like rice! Bottom front right corner is starting to rip, however lining hasn't. Fits my 17in laptop easily. For the price, I love it. Just wish it hasn't started ripping, probably going to try and sew it shut :)

There's a lot to like about this bag. It has a nice shape and aesthetic, and the recycled/hippie aspect is kind of why I bought it. Unfortunately the straps are narrow and weakly stitched. Two uses and one of the straps is already falling apart. Pity; I wanted to love this thing.

I'm still very excited and can't stop looking at it, it makes me want to travel. The material seems very strong too. So happy.

I have used this bag several times to carry light to medium weight loads. It is not built to carry heavy loads. It is quite roomy though and I have put several items in it to carry to work. It is very attractive. I would have given it 5 stars except the buttons used are not big enough to keep the loop on the flaps around it. I may end up replacing them with a larger size. Also the tie that closes the main compartment could use something to close it easier. I put a small spring loaded lock on the ties, so I could close it quickly and also know the contents were securly inside.

Booq Mamba Daypack Backpack for 15-Inch MacBook - Gray (MDP-GRY)

Booq Mamba Daypack Backpack for 15-Inch MacBook - GrayThis is probably the coolest laptop bag/ backpack I have ever purchased. Not only does it look cool, it feels cool, it also fits comfortably on the back when fully loaded. It fits everything I need for my laptop, with enough room left over for a textbook and a couple notebooks and room in the front pocket for an extra cable or other small accessories. I find it to be most useful as an overnight pack, there being adequate room for clothing and supplies for a short trip. The rigid body of the pack helps to keep your bag looking crisp as well as providing ample protection for your laptop and other breakable items contained within. Overall, unlike the formatting of my review, owning this bag just makes sense. It looks cool, stores what you need, and fits comfortably.

I wanted a compact pack to replace a computer bag.

I wanted one that was trim line and carried my 15" MacBook Pro, iPad, limited accessories and papers. The Mamba meets the need.

The water resistance works.

I would like to mention how great the Amazon logistics process works. Delivery as promised every time.

I recommend the Mamba and getting it from Amazon.

Buy Booq Mamba Daypack Backpack for 15-Inch MacBook - Gray (MDP-GRY) Now

I spent hours researching back packs, looking for the perfect laptop-protecting "day pack" for an upcoming South American tour. I needed a daypack that would protect my 14" Lenovo laptop, hold a few other essentials, yet fit in my carry-on luggage.

After searching literally hundreds of back packs, and even ordering another brand, which I returned, I came across this one. I am very pleased.

The good:

The bag looks nice. It's not flashy. That's a bonus for me.

Quality construction. I have been using this bag for only about 3 months now, but I've had no complaints with the construction, and no ripped seams yet.

Holds my 14" laptop perfectly.

It's lightweight. The lack of tons of extra features and pockets means it doesn't weigh a lot. Perfect for my needs!

Has room for a few other things--mouse, power cable, extra battery, rain jacket, sunglasses, head phones, etc.

The bad:

The only complaint I have about this bag, which won't affect most people, is that the sides are somewhat rigid. I would rather they collapse when the bag is empty. The rigidity may make the bag look nicer--it always looks like it's full, rather than the sides slouching when it's empty! But it makes packing it inside of another bag a little more difficult. That also adds to the weight of the bag slightly. Although it will help protect whatever is inside, so it may be a benefit to some people.

This is the perfect bag for the essentials! My Mac book is well protected, and looks clean and organized. I was trying to find a bag with sturdy protection without zippers and compartments all over the exterior of the bag; a minimalist look if you will. The bag came in on time and in great packaging. The bar code idea is great, but that means you have to put a little faith in society for it to work properly. I carry this bag everyday and is perfect for my lifestyle. Very sturdy with high quality fabric, stitching and webbing and zippers. My 100 dollars was invested well!

This was as very nice retro looking backpack. However, I'm returning because it just doesn't have the small pockets and pouches that I need. Zippers looked very strong and it seems to have been made well. I just couldn't use a pack that is mainly just two large compartments.

I had to spray it with febreeze, because when I got it, it smelled so bad, I wanted to vomit!!

We can do better, girls!

I offer her this bag as a Christmas present. She received it a little latter, but she does love it. She's 12.

Walt Disney Pixar Cars Combo - Cars Large Rolling Backpack, and One Cars Travel Game Card Set

Walt Disney Pixar Cars Combo - Cars Large Rolling Backpack, and One Cars Travel Game Card SetMy 5yr old loves this bag for school, has enough space for all his stuff. Made it through 6 months and ready for a new school year.

My 4 year old grandson, Denis, is very much into Disney cars, and just loves his rolling backpack.

I give this a "4" rating, simply because it: 1-has no educational value, 2-I don't know how durable it is yet, but 3-Denis loves rolling it while running on the wooden floors of his home and driving everyone else in the house crazy! 4-It's an excellent size for visiting grandma and grandpa for a weekend!Cars Large Rolling Backpack

BMW laptop computer/messenger bag

BMW laptop computer/messenger bagI got this messenger bag for school and it is perfect for holding a note book and a binder (pretty much maximum it can hold). The capacity is pretty limited, but from what i do on a daily basis it is more than enough room. It comes with a laptop sleeve-ish thing that also double as carrying small items like pencils, erasers, phones, and loose leaf paper. It does have two pockets with zippers, but i imagine the only thing that can fit in there are probably laptop/phone accessories. Overall i am super happy with this.

Pros

Clean Looking

Minimalistic and Simple

Comfortable

Relatively Small in terms of size

Very fast shipping

Cons

Somewhat limited capacity

Came with a few scuffs (not too concerned because it is overall gorgeous)

Straps are non removable

High Sierra Classic Series 59501 Appalachian 75 Internal Frame Pack

High Sierra Classic Series 59501 Appalachian 75 Internal Frame Pack Amazon 34x14.25x10.25 Inches 4580 Cubic Inches 75 LitersWhen I received my Appalachian 75 I was very pleased with the amount of compartments and places where you can hang items like a camp axe or sleeping pad. The orange interior enables you to spot things easier inside the main compartment when you are looking for something. The rain cover is great and folds nicely in the bottom. The harness fits snug around my waist and over my shoulders. I can fit enough stuff in this bag that would last me for a 5 to 7 day backpacking trip.

One the downside I noticed a few things that would get very annoying. First thing is the shoulder straps keep loosening right after I tighten them. Because of this, it makes it where you cannot tighten them as much as you want which in the end creates sway and a loose feeling on the top of the pack. I might be able to remedy this by sharpening the teeth on the belt clip. Second thing I noticed was one of the straps that run vertical across the length of my bag, to add support, is stitched incorrectly. Only half of the strap is stitched which looks like it might come apart with more use. The last thing, and is minor, is the zippers. If you want to pack an average sized sleeping bag or fill up your compartments to the brim, be prepared to spend a great deal of time zipping them up. The placement and size of the zippers allow there to be some difficulty in zipping up.

Conclusion: I am happy with the pack because of the amount of things I can bring with me. The features are great! I am just disappointed in some of the manufacturing flaws that I have to spend time on fixing myself.

Let me start off by saying that I would definitely recommend this backpack. I love the fact that it is top loading and front loading. I also like the removable day pack that doubles as the lid or top of the pack, and the sleeping bag compartment that can be zippered off on the inside of the bag to create a completely separate section. I also like that the bag comes with its own rain cover which is conveniently stored at the very bottom of the bag under the sleeping bag section. The bottom of the bag has an opening that allows you to access the rain cover by simply opening the Velcro and pulling the rain cover out. You will have to remove anything that you strap to the bottom of the bag by the two latching compression straps in order to access the rain cover opening. Having the rain cover at the bottom of the bag also provides cushion should you choose to use the sleeping bag area for other items.

With this bag I was able to carry loads over 40 lbs. very comfortably. I would especially recommend this pack to those who are just getting started in backpacking since it is "Very" user friendly. Having said that, this pack would be even better for the more experienced backpacker since they would know more about the ins and outs of packing it. The pack is also very versatile for body types since it is very adjustable for differing torso lengths.

I am 6'01 and weigh 230 lbs and I have not hiked in years and I have never owned a hiking backpack, I have used hunting backpacks. Therefore, I spent literally weeks researching backpacks on the internet and at the local small outfitter. I looked at all brands and all price ranges. I knew that I was not going to go out and spend thousands to get the lightest tent, sleeping pad, mess kit, etc. So I knew that I needed a larger pack. I will also say that I am not a weight weenie. I am a full time police officer and I have walked around, and run around, for over 21 years with over 30 lbs. of gear being worn daily.

I went to the outfitters and saw how small a 55 and 65 liter bag was so I began to look at 75 liter bags and above. I was eventually impressed with all the positive reviews of the High Sierra Appalachian Trail 75 liter bag. I was even more impressed that I was able to get it with free shipping for only $90 dollars.

I purchased the bag and have used it twice on approx 8 mile hikes with one being an overnight hike. I will say that the the belt issue (being too large for small wasted people) that many speak of could be a problem if your waste is too small. Having said that, my daughter who is an average size 12 year old and has a waist far smaller than 32 inches. She asked to carry the pack on a hike and I was able to adjust both the back setting and the belt to nearly fit her perfectly.

Some have reviewers have complained about the bag weighing too much. My response to that is, first off it is a 75 liter pack and therefore will weigh more because it is a large pack, secondly the pack is built to last, and lastly it has well padded straps and hip belt which add weight. It is possible to cut the packs weight by a few ounces by cutting off any extra length from the generously long straps, especially on the waist stap.

I will say that once you get your load strapped down tight with the multiple tightening straps, and you get the pack dialed in for your body, the pack carries heavy loads very comfortably. My pack weight is over 40 lbs.

I have have no complaints with this bag. I love it. I can carry all my equipment and necessities inside the bag. It is also very convenient because it is top and front loading. There could also be access through the sleeping bag storage area if you chose too. I would truly recommend this pack to anyone.

03/14/12 Update. I have been on many day hikes using this pack. I have carried loads from 30 to 40 lbs, up to nine miles. I have never had any issues with the straps coming loose. I have not had any troubles with the zippers either. The more I use this pack, the more I like it. As said above, this pack is better than some that cost twice as much. I just went on a six mile hike today with a 30 lb. pack. I had the pack dialed in and the 30 lbs. carried great on my hips. I would buy High Sierra products again based on this product. (Update 10/01/12I did purchase another High Sierra backpack for my daughters. It was a 35 liter top loading only pack that works quite well for their smaller bodies.)

07/25/12 update. I have now been on two different two night and three day hikes with my High Sierra Appalachian Trail 75 liter pack. Sadly, I am not a wealthy man so I cannot afford to purchase the high priced and low weight items so my pack weight for each trips was 49 lbs. The pack preformed perfectly. Obviously with 49 lbs, the pack holds a ton of gear. And even at 49 lbs. I had no issues with any straps loosening or buckles breaking, and once I had it dialed in I was good to go. I would venture to say that 49 lb. loads probably is about the limit for plastic buckles if you have a little extra weight around the mid section. The extra weight pushes the buckle out at an angle which makes it easier for the buckle to open due to the pressure, but that is just common sense. I fit a size large Therm-a-rest self inflating pad 78x25x2.5, my big synthetic 30 degree Kelty sleeping bag4 lbs 1 oz., large two man Stansport Starlite 2 tent (See my review on Amazon. I highly recommend this tent), full two liter Platypus water pouch, 1 liter Gatoraid, 2XL Frogg Togg rain gear, camp pillow, fuel bottled camp stove, camp shoes, three pairs of extra socks, 1 lb Coleman magnetic tent light, first aid kit, camp towels, Sawyer squeezable water purifying kit, mess kit with utensils, food and snacks, collapsible fishing pole and reel, small fishing kit, and a few odds and ends; and the bag preformed perfectly. I love the ease of access either through the top or through the front of the bag. There are two outside side pockets that are approx. 6 inches by two inches, a large double pocketed pack cover, and a pocket on the front entry flap to hold the essentials that you might need to get to quickly during your hike. I like the media pouch on the shoulder strap and the mesh pockets on the hip belt that can hold full size Gatorade bottles with a little work. I have no intentions of looking for any other bag! I will begin to whittle down on what I carry to save weight as 49 lbs. is a lot of weight to carry all day long! Please feel free to ask questions or make any comments. Kevin

I purchased this pack for a 3 day hike on the Appalachian Trail. It is a good sized pack and it fit comfortably on my hips. It makes good use of space and has a port for a camel bak which I took advantage of. The only problem I have with the pack is the poor quality of zippers on it. I busted a zipper on the top part of the pack as I was loading it for the first time. For the most part you can't beat the price of the pack and the fact it is very comfortable. I would also note that this pack is not for a small person. I have a 34" waist and it fit me great, but if you are much more thin than me you are going to have a problem getting the waist belt tight enough.

I really like this pack. this is my first year into backpacking, and the High Sierra Appalachian 75 is my first backpack with any size going for it. It stores all of my gear, enough for my weekend hikes. I'm 6ft 0in tall, and overweight. The waist belt fits me just fine, the cinching straps work well for me. I've read other reviews that complain of this feature, I've not had a problem so far. The zippers seem to be stiff and hard to use, but it appears to be from the fact that their heavy duty and will ease with time and repeated use. I would definitely recommend this pack to anyone that's in the market for a large roomy pack.

Want High Sierra Classic Series 59501 Appalachian 75 Internal Frame Pack Discount?

I ordered this pack based on the High Sierra reputation, great price and online reviews. Most of them were spot on. I just took the pack for a two-day 17 mile back country hike. The quality of the pack is commendable, the space available for packing is great, lots of pockets, great accessibility to your pack contents via different pockets and zippered access points. All in all, I like the pack, and want to love it. But...

The shoulder straps do not hold. When you initially pull the straps tight to bring the pack close to your torso, it feels great. After 30 seconds or so of hiking they begin to slip, and continue to do so. It is maddening. I ended up almost constantly grasping the straps to tighten them--literally 1-2 times a minute. I did not use any hiking poles, and really couldn't have, as both hands were constantly occupied with tightening the shoulder straps. Thinking it might be an adjustment issue, I took the pack off and took a closer look at the buckles. I could loosen the straps through the teeth of the buckle with just a little pressure from my finger. I honestly think these buckles are inferior in design. Either the teeth aren't sharp enough, preventing the straps from being firmly secured by the buckle, or there is just too much space where the strap is threaded through the buckle, with the same end result.

I will take a good look at these buckles, and perhaps I can re-thread the strap. If I can't find a solution though, I will reluctantly return this pack. As an aside, I also simultaneously bought the Appalachian Sentinal 65 pack as well. The buckles on the shoulder straps on that one work impeccably, with no sliding or slipping. I honestly think there may be a defective or poorly designed buckle on the 75 liter pack shoulder straps, but not on the 65! I will update this review in a few days after I tinker a bit more with them.

Again, aside from this strap issue, I really liked the pack, and it worked out very well for me on a fairly rigorous hike.
