I have been searching for a large, quality bag for months, ever since my old Brenthaven started giving out. A key requirement for me was having a non-black lining, which is what almost all bags have, except Briggs-Riley, which has an orange lining. But the Briggs-Riley bags have few interior pockets. Black lining makes it impossible to find small things in a bag. Then I found the Firewall eTech 2.0, which is completely lined in orange material! It also has several exterior easy-access pockets to accommodate a magazine one may be reading at the boarding gate, as well as pocket-stuff that has to be removed to go through airport security. The two small zip pockets on the side are nice. The one for a water bottle I use for a small umbrella. The other is a good place for medications one might need on a flight. And all of this four less than one-third the price of Briggs-Riley. It is apparent that the eBags designers actually use luggage and know what works and does not.

The interior computer sleeve is brilliant! I carry my 15" laptop in a neoprene zip bag, so I just removed the two foam spacers and my computer fits perfectly. On top of that, the extra little pouch for a tablet is wonderful... all of the computer stuff organized and protected in one place. Nobody else has those features. The expansion zipper is also nice as it makes the file folder compartment larger if one needs it on the way home when conference material has accumulated. The stand-up handles are extremely well padded and make carrying the bag a pleasure.

Complaints? I would like to see more and larger mesh pockets in the organizer, and have some pockets in the file folder section. Maybe the next version will have those.

We were looking for a small piece of luggage for our 4 year old grandson and this turned out to be a big hit. He loves Toy Story and Buzz Lightyear. The construction was very good, the zippers easy to open and close and the size just right for him and the price was just right.

My only downgrade was that there wasn't any information given on how to lower the handle which I was afraid that I might break because I wouldn't find a release. It tured out that you had to use a pretty good pressure just puching it back down. A little note on that would have saved several minute and the thought of breaking something.

Good purchase, I'd reccoment it for any "little person'.

David King & Co Large Distressed Leather Laptop Messenger

I've been looking for a quality leather messenger bag for the past 6 months, and this bag fits the bill.

I'm a visual person and so it was a big leap for me to buy this bag since there was only one picture of the bag. What tipped the scale for me was reading the reviews. Reading the reviews of people who have purchased a product is absolutely invaluable in making the right decision

On to the product review:

The bag is made of quality leather, and uses double stitching. The bag strap is long enough to accommodate a big person, and at about 1.5 inches wide it doesn't get twisted up. The bag does not have a shoulder pad, which I initially thought would be a problem, because messenger bags that I've owned in the past that didn't have a pad had a tendency to dig into my shoulder. That is not the case with this bag.

The front flap is made of a single piece of relatively thick leather and is held down by a brass snap in the front. Hidden underneath of the front flap are two pockets that are about 3 inches wide, 4.5 inches long, and about .75 inches in depth; each having a single brass snap. Above the pockets is a zipper pocket that is about 12 inches wide and 9 inches long, and can easily hold a 75 page paper notebook.

The inside of the bag itself has 3 divided sections. The first section has pen, calculator and business card holders plus there is room for a 1 inch 3 ring binder. The middle section is zippered with a padded back area and was clearly meant to hold a laptop computer of 15.4 inches in size, although it is big enough to hold a 1.5 inch 3 ring binder. The last divided section was meant to hold notebooks, 3 ring binders, and books/textbooks. A big plus about this back section is that it will easily hold a 17.3 inch laptop computer plus a few additional items. The backing for the last interior section is padded as well.

A note about the 2 back padded areas. The padding is not all that thick, but that shouldn't be a problem since the bag is made of leather and that in and of itself provides additional protection for a laptop computer.

The back side of the messenger bag has a pocket for slipping in a newspaper, paper notebook, manila envelope, or paper notebook. There is no snap or zipper for this pocket.

There is no bag handle for the bag, however since this is a messenger bag that should be expect. If you need a bag with a handle, you should look at a briefcase or some other similar type bag.

Overall the bag looks good and the one image of it here on Amazon does not reflect how nice it looks. The double stitching is apparent and it looks and feels like a leather bag. The color of the leather is dark brown and it visually has a worn old school look to it. It has a stylish professional look to it that can be used for office / business or school.

Much has been said about the quality of this bag in other reviews, so I won't get into that. However, there's a big error with this particular listing, and potential buyers should take note. The photograph for this listing is for an entirely different bag from David King & Co. If you go to the official David King website (ussuitcase.com), and look under "messengers", you'll notice that the photograph above (which looks medium/dark brown) is for the "Distressed North/South Messenger Bag" (SKU: 6111), dimensions 12.5" x 10.5" x 4" . However, the bag that you'll actually receive (which looks nearly black), should you order from this listing, is "Distressed Large, Full Flap Messenger" (SKU: 6153), dimensions 15.5" x 11.5" x 4". Notice that neither bag has the 17" x 12.5" x 5" shown in this listing, so who knows where the seller got that number. If you would like to see an Amazon listing for the bag you'll actually be receiving, go here: [edit 7/2011: item has since been removed]. That isn't to say that this bag is not good. In fact, given that the medium/dark brown bag is smaller, I ended up needing the larger, nearly black bag after all (which is why I still rate the product a 5). But if you're wanting this bag purely for aesthetics and expect the dark brown bag above and not the nearly-black looking bag you'll be getting instead, you might be sorely disappointed.

I searched a lot of places for a distressed leather messenger bag for a gift for my husband, and this photo is the exact look that I was hoping for. However, the bag that I received was not the one in the photo. In fact, it is the one described in another review of this product (titled "Inaccuracies..."). I am disappointed because I can't find the one in the picture anywhere else. I ended up returning it and finding one at Wilson's Leather. I searched for a bag that had chest compression straps, an optional waist strap, and a laptop case. Many of them were very big and bulky bags.

This bag received a good review on a techblog on Yahoo.com.

The STM bag is very compact. There are a lot of compartments, but filling one often leads to less room in another.

For example:

* The bottom zippered pouch, which could hold your laptop charger, means there is less room in the bottom of the first zippered compartment

The medium bag can, at maximum, hold the following items:

* Macbook pro 15" + charger

* Ipad

* Cellphone / iphone + charger

* 2 notebooks (composition size)

* 2 paperback books or 1 moderate size hardcover book (don't try to fit a textbook or anything bulking in here the material has no stretch or give).

The biggest flaw is in the rain protection.

* The bag is made of a water resistant material.

* There is a small rain flap over the front set of zippers for the ipad compartment (which also holds pens and other items).

* However, there is NO SUCH flap over the second zippered compartment (the one that holds your laptop). Any rain or water, even a slight spill, is going to go right through the zipper and into the laptop compartment. This has happened to me twice, even in a light drizzle (and if you own a Macbook, it will void your warranty due to "water damage").

I ended up buying the STM branded rain cover (a silver bag that goes over the backpack). It hangs out in the bottom "laptop charger" compartment, and takes up even more room in the limited amount of room in the bag. This rain cover is a bit too bulky for the bag however it does stop rain from getting into that one zippered waterproof area.

So if you are a city commuter, using subways, buses, bicycles, don't take this bag out if there is a chance of rain you risk ruining your most valuable electronic possessions.

I was looking for a backpack that didn't seem huge or too bulky. I am 5'4" and didn't want to look like a little kid with an overloaded backpack. This is compact, but still fits my portable (MacBook Pro 15") and necessary files. There are great compartments for the battery charger, mouse, pens, you name it. Wears well and I would buy again.

This bag is nice if you just need to carry a laptop plus a few other gadgets or notebooks. If you need to carry school books, this will not work well for you. Thus, it is not a bulky bag at all, and I feel comfortable wearing it while I bike. It has both a chest strap and a waist strap to securely fasten it while moving; however, I do wish there was a better system for holding the excess strap rather than the provided elastic bands since they seem to slip.

In addition, on my bag I had some of the stitching tear as well as one of the zippers fail. However, I simply sent a picture to STM and they sent me a replacement. So it's a great bag for carrying a laptop to work or school and STM warranty was great.

The bag is super durable. There are a lot of pockets and spots to put your stuff, and it is really well made. The iPad pocket is really nice and so is the laptop pocket. I thought my 17.3" laptop wouldn't fit because looking at the "interior dimensions" on the specifications page, my laptop was too big, but in reality, it fit perfectly and I'm really happy with this bag. I will say that there is not a ton of room if you plan on filling the thing with more than like three or four textbooks. But if you're a college student it's a perfect laptop bag because you won't need to carry more than one textbook at a time. Plus this is at a really good value, it's normally close to $100

High Sierra Loop Backpack

The qualities I look for in a backpack are durability and usefulness (usually size, practicality, etc...). This pack meet all those expectations. It is a backpack that would be equally comfortable on a long 7-8 hour hike or a 10 minute walk to class. With adjustable bands essentially everywhere, it is easy to limit the 'bulkiness' of the pack itself.

The bag feels surprising large for the specified volume, but also weighs very little when empty. The cushioning all over the straps provides a soft touch. One thing that I didn't like is the feel/texture of the padding on the back. It feels like padding that has been covered up by a cheap plastic. Fortunately, the yoke shaped harness transfers most of the load on your shoulders and away from the back.

Durability wise, I cannot yet make a definite statement, but it seems to be extremely well built. The stitching looks to be good at every joint, and under heavy loads, there doesnt seem to be too big of an issue with the stitches stretching.

Overall, this was an excellent buy, and I plan on using it for years to come.

[Update 2010-10-28]

After about half a year, one of the shoulder straps started ripping apart at the seam, and the zipper to the front pocket had broken off. I think the high ratings for this backpack are based on early user experiences. I had initially rated the backpack 5 stars myself, but I'm downgrading the rating to 3 stars because this backpack isn't very durable. I've had JanSport backpacks that have held up to *years* of heavy use. If you're looking for something more durable, you might want to spend a little more to get a JanSport or a North Face backpack (both of which are renowned for their quality and durability).

2 Side Pockets

Each of the two side pockets has an elastic band and see-through mesh netting. Each pocket is an ideal place for putting a water bottle, a pair of hiking poles, or even a tripod. I use one of the pockets for a camera tripod and the other for a water bottle when I'm out shooting.

3 zippered compartments

There are 3 other zippered compartments besides the main zippered compartment.

o The largest of the compartments (located in front of the backpack) has lots of pockets for putting your calculator, cell phone, stationery, etc. It has plenty of room; it will fit 3 or 4 small paperback books, just to give you a rough idea of its size. There's a hook for attaching your keychain too.

o The topmost compartment has an opening for threading the wire of a pair of headphones/earphones through so you can listen to music while the MP3 player is safely stowed away in the compartment.

This backpack is great. After my old Jansport backpack, I wanted something that supported my back a little more. At first, I wasn't used to the middle section of the straps digging into my neck, but I realize that it's there to take some weight off your shoulders and transfer to the back, and now I appreciate it because my shoulders feel so much better! The shoulder straps also have a nice suspension system and are cushioned very well, which makes carrying heavy books less of a burden.

I'm a small person, so I wanted a backpack that wasn't so big, and this was a perfect fit. It's not a huge bag, but it fits a lot more than you'd expect. Also, the City Map/Ash color is very urban and unique.

My current backpack of choice is a High Sierra single strap backpack. I got this one since I thought it would be the same as my other backpack, but have two straps. There are a couple things that sadly are not the same. The main compartment doesn't have a padded divider. Since I use my backpack mostly to carry around my laptop, a padded divider would have been a HUGE plus. The second thing is that the compartment meant for your iPod (or other mp3 player of your choice) is the same plasticy fabric that lines rest of the backpack. In my single strap High Sierra, it had soft fabric for that compartment which definitely prevented scratching. The yolk at the top between the two straps is uncomfortable. I can feel it pressing against my back. Maybe I just haven't adjusted it correctly yet. Those things aside, it still has the same high quality construction and has plenty of room. Maybe once I break it in a bit more I'll be happier with it.

Update: Yeah, this backpack blows. I have tried adjusting the straps in various ways, but that yoke piece is still bothersome. If you look at the picture of the mannequin from the back, you can see exactly what I'm talking about. Either the backpack has a gap between it and your back or that yoke is pressing into your neck. Personally, I want a backpack to sit flush on my back so if you need to bust out a sprint to catch the bus, the backpack isn't bouncing around smacking the crap out of you. It also helps defuse the weight more evenly. Even though the single strap High Sierra backpack tends to fatigue my shoulder if I wear it for too long, it's still infinitely more comfortable than this one. Gave it to my nephew to play with. He uses it to "play school".

I've used this bag twice a week for school for the past 8 months, and every single one of the cloth zipper pulls have unraveled/shredded. The more the pulls unravel, the more they are caught in the zippers. So I've had to cut them all of them off. The seams of the backpack are also coming unraveled such that 2-inch-long threads are hanging loose at seams all over the bag. Now I'm on Amazon shopping for a better quality backpack.

UPDATE: High Sierra has a 100% satisfaction guarantee for their products. The claim was very easy to file and quickly processed. While they don't offer refunds, they did replace the bag and send a $10 rebate for future purchases. While this new bag does not seem to be of significantly different quality than the old one, HS should be commended for great customer service.

I'm not going to rate this as a 1 just because I had to return it. It IS a very nice case, good material quality and very well put together.

However, I would warn everyone who is thinking of buying this to be cautious. It says that it is an 8-10 inch Netbook/iPad case, but that isn't quite true. I have the Toshiba 10.1 inch Mini Netbook, which the description says will fit in this case. It doesn't. It stuck out at least 1-2 inches past the zipper. I would say if you have a Netbook/iPad that is 8 inches or less, this case is for you. Anything bigger, pass this right up, because you will be returning it.

If you want something carry-on size, under weight restrictions, and portable; this bag is for you! Definitely great backpacking throughout England on planes, trains, and automobiles for a week and a half. If you tend to over-pack this bag is not for you. Also, if you have larger clothes then this may not be suitable. I am a short, small girl (5'1"-110lbs.), so this bag was nice as well with weight distribution. Took a little getting used to it and loading it right, but by the end of the trip I was able to swing this puppy over my shoulder as if it weighed less than 10lbs. (my pack probably weighed 30lbs.) The top-loading was somewhat hard to use in certain situations, but again, by the end of my trip I knew the best ways to pack it. Overall, love this pack and hope to take it on a longer stint throughout Europe later this year.

I bought this bag based on the reviews that everyone wrote about it being "sized" for a carry on, fits under an airplane seat, evenly distributes weight and packs a lot of stuff. After shuffling this bag across England, Germany, Spain and Switzerland, this is not true:

1. Fits under the seatIf you pack this bag to be even remotely full, it is too deep to fit under the seat. You could however, try to cram it in, put your foot over it and then your coat over your lap so the stewardess won't force you to check it.

2. Sized for some carry onsIt is ok for 8 out of 10 airplanes. Smaller airplanes will force you to check it and the bag needs to be placed horizontally to fit in the overhead (meaning it takes up a lot of room). I highly recommend you getting on the flight first to make sure you have enough space. Also, UNITED may force you to check this bag for domestic flights. This bag theoretically meets the size requirements but it just LOOKS huge. Beware.

3. Distributes WeightIf you pack this bag to be remotely heavy, you will hate yourself. It feels no different from any other backpack filled with heavy stuff. The internal frame does very little to make this tenable.

4. Packs a lot of stuffThis bag looks big but doesn't pack a lot. The most I've been able to fit is about a weekend of clothes (that I wore twice), toiletries and shoes. My friend had a purse that fit more than this bag. There are no side packets or any nooks and crannies to store most things. Things that are slightly wide are really hard to put in and take out (IE: laptop, papers, notebooks)... I tried to put a binder in to no avail.

5. Top loading is terribleIf you are backpacking across XYZ, imagine having to take EVERYTHING out of your bag to get a pair of shoes...now, imagine doing that again and again, spreading your stuff all over dirty hostels around the world.

The pack is very comfortable carrying 20+lbs. It suits well on my hips and the straps are extremely comfortable the whole time. Definitely recommend.

This pack works great. I use it on my bike commute 5 days a week for 12 miles a day. the weight is distributed nicely and the straps are nice and thick with the two front straps it hardly moves around so I don't have to worry about the weight shifting to one side of my body and falling off my bike.

The top back loop in the middle unthreaded because I attached my Ulock through it. Don't put anything too heavy on those.

I let my daughter pick out her backpack and she just had to have this one. School started in September and the lining between the front section and the main compartment completely ripped apart by October. She is a second grader with minimal books and items in her pack. The zippers have never sailed along smoothly. She still loves the picture on it which is actually bright and crisp, but the actual pack is so poorly made. It's a definite half-year survivor only.

I would not say use this for camping or school (it is not the most heavy duty bag). It works great for PJ's and Barbie dolls or a change of clothes. That is what my daughter uses it for.
