Samsonite Wheeled Backpack

The material is sturdy and the color was truly how it looked on Amazon; however, Samsonite needs to take a couple of lesson from Jansport on how to build an adequate wheeled backpack, especially for students who intend to use it everyday. My 2 complaints are as follows: one, the traction on the wheels needs improvement.The backpack makes alot of noise when rolled and it is not a smooth glide as I had with my trusty Jansport and two, there should be one large compartment instead of one medium and one small. I wish that Jansport still made there wheeled backpacks like they use too...oh well....

Whoops! Samsonite's warehouse sent me the wrong color at first. To make matters worse, they sent me the girly purple color they had been trying to sell for cheaper than my color.

Amazon recommended that I start by calling Samsonite's customer service. I did, and of course they helpfully suggested that I call Amazon. But I stayed on and explained my situation, and they located the mistake in their own records and apologized for sending the wrong thing.

Unfortunately, this first call resulted in being promised a replacement that never got shipped, and being promised a confirmation e-mail of the return that never got sent. And after a week of waiting, I got an e-mail that was worded as if the first call to Samsonite had never happened, telling me that this is Amazon's problem to take care of.

I e-mailed them back with a detailed explanation of all the (mis)communication that had taken place so far and they apologized for putting me through the run-around, sent the correct one, and most importantly, promised to streamline their communication with Amazon.

Overall everyone was very friendly on the phone, I am happy with my product now. No more hassle to go through now.

About the bag itself:

I use the bag to carry a heavy laptop and school materials to and around campus and it's definitely up to the task.

It seems durable and well made; nothing's out of whack so far even though I've used it a lot. I got to try two of them, and there weren't any obvious manufacturing differences so quality control seems to be ok.

The backpack is indeed a little noisy over cobblestone and sidewalk cracks, but completely silent at all other times.

The handle only has one length setting and I'm not so sure about that. I was surprised it's not longer; I'm very short and it seems just the right height for me.

When you're picking up the backpack for a curb or stairway, you have to bend down and pick it up by the strap; you cannot safely pick it up by the metal handle. I can tell it's not strong enough for that. The handle's clearly designed to only take force in one direction; putting any diagonal force on it tends to tweak it out of where it's attached. Secondly, it's designed for an amount of force equal to pulling the backpack while it's on the ground, not pulling the whole weight of the full backpack into the air. If you're buying this for a kid, of course they're going to yank it by handle anyway, so it won't last as long.

I found the straps to be adequate even though they're not as padded as you'd get out of a regular backpack.

For going up several flights of stairs you may want to switch to the straps, but this is hindered a bit by how the zippers for uncovering the straps get caught. Since I was able to try out two of these backpacks, I can say that both of them had this problem with that zipper. I learned that the problem is not the zipper itself; it's actually getting caught in a triangular flap where the straps mount. This is sort of a design flaw. To get around it, you have to pull the zipper an inch up and then down again until it gets past that point and lets the straps come fully out.

About the "rolling backpack experience" in general:

I was actually slightly underwhelmed with the savings in physical effort required by a rolling backpack vs. a normal one. It's not effortless; you do have to hold your arm and shoulder in an unnatural position and apply a bit of constant force (on anything but a downhill), which could lead to the same type of shoulder strain / repetitive stress soreness of regular backpacks, which I was trying to get away from. Just less of it, maybe.

Also, whenever you get to any sort of curb or stairway (which turn out to be much more common than you would notice with a regular backpack), you usually have to bend down to pick the full weight of the backpack up (if you try to skip this step in a hurry, you risk the wheels skipping off the ground, spinning the backpack around until you fix it). Bending down and picking it up by your arm strains the back moreso than if you just carried a regular backpack up the same stairs, where the weight would be properly placed over your center of gravity.

The real benefit of the rolling packpacks, then, comes not from reduced strain but from the added amount of stuff you can carry around. Although it's still a strain rolling one of these around all day, you don't really feel much difference if it's full of heavy stuff or nearly empty; that weight is pressing down on the ground, not you! Practically speaking, this means that I can comfortably carry around my laptop, textbooks, notebook, water bottle, and a jacket all the way to and across campus, whereas with a normal backpack I could only comfortably carry the notebook without getting sore shoulders afterwards.

In conclusion, the benefit of this backpack comes not necessarily from savings in effort, but from the increased utility of being able to carry around however much you want. If you find yourself having to forego bringing certain things with you because you have a back back and are worried about having to lug it around, then this backpack is for you.

I should mention that you might stand out more with a rolling backpack at school if you're the only one with one. If you don't want that sort of attention, think about that too. Also, there are things such as "tripping people" that you suddenly have to think about, when you wouldn't with a normal backpack.

The quality of the wheeled backpack is good. However, the design has some deficiencies that make it harder to use then necessary. 1. The main pouch where the PC goes is slanted down so far that it is hard to get PCs out of the back pack at the airport unless the bag is nearly empty. 2. The cloth handle at the top of the bag (for hand carry) is too far forward making it difficult to use the handle to connect it to luggage so you can pull it behind the luggage (the weight isn't distributed well enough that the bag will flip/roll frequently). 3. One of the front pockets only has one zipper. This makes it take longer to zip close as you have to zip it close clear to the bottom of the bag. If I had it to do over, I would not purchase this bag.

This would be a great product if a very gentle adult were to use this. My 11 year old seemed to be able to destroy it within 2 weeks. One of the plastic bound areas by a wheel popped out the two rivits and the zipper couldn't hold up to the crazy number of books that students (even in Elem. school) must tote around to classes. He is on his second one, that I had to purchase because the repair policy puts the nearest repair center at over 25 miles away AND the return policy is non-existent. I emailed to ask what I could do and only received a form letter response telling me to go the web site (which is where I found the prior information). I DID get a message on my phone about 5 days after REVIEWING their product on Amazon. I chose not to answer or call back. I am a 'too little, too late' type of person. If the seccond Samsonite Med. Wheeled Backpack holds up, that's great. It has so far (about one month) but I am not impressed with the customer services that they offer. Personally, I would've given only 1 star if the 2nd backpack hadn't held up so long. Maybe it is just bad luck on my behalf or even my 11 year old but the customer service was horrible, regardless of how the damage occurred. I really just wanted a repair place near my home to have it fixed myself. I am NOT driving 25 miles just to have someone tell me that my son damaged it. I was happy driving 3 and paying for the repair myself!!!

Responsibly made from recycled plastic bottles. Comfortable straps, and on my back. Purchased on sale directly from maker this week rather than regular price currently on Amazon. I have used this style for two days, but have daily used the scoop bag of the same material, style, color, etc. for about 1.5-two years. The scoop's wide, strong strap is comfortable either on the shoulder or from one shoulder across body to opposite side of trunk. The scoop bag style shows almost no wear, fraying, etc. after heavy use. The backpack style should perform similarly, though I have not had it long enough to know the durability of the buckle fasteners on the backpack style.

Executive summary: Buy this bag, it's exactly what you need. Trust me, I looked at the other bags out there, and this does everything, plus it's well designed, intelligently assembled, and generally perfect.

Detailed review:

I recently purchased my first DSLR (a Nikon D90), and I had absolutely nothing in the way of camera gear. I've been taking photos for a long time, and while I have a couple of cheaper digital cameras, my purchase of the D90 pushed me to find a secure, comfortable, easily accessible bag in which I could store the camera and everything associated with it.

First, a note about what I mean by "everything." As a DSLR newbie, I wanted to be able to pack and carry the following items at all times:

* The D90 body with 18-200mm lens attached

* Nikon SB-600 speedlight (large, external flash)

* 50mm prime lens (fairly small, stubby lens)

* Quart-sized bag of stuff (extra camera battery, lens caps, flash mount for remote flash usage, etc.)

* D90 printed manual (just in case I need to figure out a specific setting on the go)

I also wanted a camera bag that met the following criteria, in order of importance (but all are required):

* Accessibility I want a camera bag that lets me access my DSLR, with lens attached, in less than 15 seconds, all without taking off the bag or having to set it down anywhere (I also want to put the camera back in 15 seconds)

* Pack shape I want a backpack, not a sling bag; I just don't feel comfortable wearing a sling-style bag or a messenger-type bag

* Subtlety I don't want a bag that screams "$3000 in gear inside!" and I don't want a bag that is anything other than black on black

* Size This bag needs to be sized for carrying onto an airplane; I don't want to check my DSLR and gear

* Comfort I want to be able to wear this bag all day as a daypack but with my DSLR gear and my lunch inside, and I don't want to get back spasms from the weight distribution or from objects poking through the backpack fabric and jabbing me

* Aesthetically pleasing Some of those camera bags out there look incredibly ugly; I want one that looked modern and stealthy, without 37 zippers or drawstrings or pouches hanging around the front and sides

* Security Somebody else can't tear or easily cut the bag off my body while I'm wearing it, and the zippers and closures aren't terribly easy to open or unseal

* Mild weatherproofing I'm not going to wear this bag underwater or in a hurricane, but I don't want water or dust to get in easily, either

* Manufacturing location Although products made in China are of generally high quality at this price point, I want a camera bag made in the US mostly because I'm in the US and we need all the jobs we can get at this point

* Laptop space My least important requirement because I don't plan to travel with a laptop all that often if I can help it, but I am willing to choose one bag over another if there's padded space for a laptop without compromising on the overall carry-on size requirement

As you can see, I'm picky. I'm also a product designer by trade, so I did my homework on camera bags. I narrowed down my options online first, and then went to local stores to try on bags, using all of my gear to see which bag would work.

I wasted my time. There were no bags out there that met my first two criteria, let alone all the rest. But then I noticed that Tamrac had just announced the Aero Speed Pack 75 and 85. The major difference between these two is the padded laptop pouch and slightly larger size of the 85. Both work as carry-on bags regardless of the laptop space.

I couldn't find any reviews for either of these bags, nor could I find a Seattle-area retailer who had them for sale so I could check them out in person. So I took the plunge and bought the 85 from Amazon. How does it stack up against my criteria?

* Accessibility I can get at my DSLR, with lens attached, in less than 15 seconds! I love the side pocket; it's apparently the only current camera bag that has a side-access pocket on a backpack-shaped bag. Brilliant.

* Pack shape The Aero Speed Pack 85 is a backpack. Awesome.

* Subtlety Unlike the LowePro and other bags that have camera and tripod icons clearly visible, this bag doesn't really advertise its purpose. If you're into cameras, you'd recognize the small Tamrac logo and brand name on the front and on the strap, but I'm cool with that. Also, this bag comes in two color choices, and I went with the black on black.

* Size This bag is a carry-on according to Alaska Airlines, so I'm happy.

* Comfort The padded laptop pouch at the back of the bag forms a cushion between your back and the bag contents. It's one of the most comfortable bags I've worn, although it may make my back sweaty over an hour or more of use. That's probably unavoidable for a camera bag if you want it to keep out dust and water, though.

* Aesthetically pleasing This bag looks nice. It's all black. And, it stands up on its own when empty or full of gear. Now that's pleasing.

* Security Some of the zippers have weather stripping around the seams, which means they're hard to open. They seem like they'll get easier as I break in the zippers a bit, but I like this feature because it adds a little security.

* Mild weatherproofing The weather strips around the zipper seams give the impression of mild weatherproofing. In Seattle, we get a lot of blowing mist rather than straightforward rain, so I'm glad this bag has the weather strips.

* Manufacturing location Tamrac bags are made in California. Dude!

* Laptop space There's a dedicated, padded pocket for a 17" widescreen laptop (haven't tested the fit, but it's a pretty big space). This means the laptop is safe, and I can take it out for airport security without rearranging all my stuff in my bag. This pocket also features weather stripping around the zipper, which is smart.

The Tamrac Aero Speed Bag 85 is precisely the bag I wanted. It's like the people at Tamrac decided to make a camera bag that solved all the design problems that plague not just camera bags, but backpacks too. This bag stands up on its own. I love that. There's a webbed grip on the top handle so it's easy and comfortable to lift. I love that too. These little touches demonstrate the attention to detail that Tamrac invested in this bag. It's worth the money. It's the right size. I can put my lunch in it along with my D90.

First, let me say (and this is just a personal observation) that many people hope to get more than what they pay for. We all love a bargain, but don't expect a Jeep to have all the features of a Hummer. This is a relatively inexpensive backpack; you could spend $300 or more for a fancier item. However, in this case at least, inexpensive does not mean cheap. This is quality merchandise.

Second, I believe that a review should be based upon whether or not the item is as advertised. This item is at least as good as advertised, so it deserves five stars.

I like this pack a lot. I used it yesterday at its max capacity, carrying a 15.4" laptop, a reflector, a camera with lens attached, an extra battery, filters, cords, three extra lenses and a full-size tripod: 26.4 pounds.

That was a HEAVY load, but there is no question in my mind the pack could have managed more. It is well constructed, and the straps, even holding all that weight, remained comfortable.

However, I don't plan to carry that much of a load every time I go out with this pack, and I don't think you would either.

There are six noteworthy points that may not be clear from the advertising and specs for this pack, yet that are crucial to a purchasing decision:

6This pack does not sport a hip strap, which is a necessity when carrying heavier loads.

5This pack has no cell phone pocket.

4The water bottle can fall out when you sling this pack off one shoulder in order to access your camera from the side compartment on the other side.

3The zippers on two of the four zippered compartments close water-tight. That makes them a little harder to operate than a regular zipper.

2Too few pockets/pouches exist. Those included are: One for a water bottle on the side (holds a liter bottle or a canteen easily), one for cords and miscellaneous on the back outside (five inches by six inches), two stretch pockets inside the upper "personal" compartment, two zippered pockets approximately 3" by 5" on the inside flap of the main camera/lens compartment, and three Velcro-closing compartments on the ready-camera side flap, one that is 3" by 4", big enough for a spare filter (in its case), and two more that measure about 2" x 2" for memory cards.

1Your camera can fly out the side access door, or your lenses can spew from the back door (if you forget to zip up).

The only item above that matters a great deal to me is the last one. I don't plan to carry a heavy load all the time, I won't have my cell phone with me on a photo expedition, I can lash down the water bottle with the built-in elastic strap, and I can deal with the slow zippers (if you're in an area where photo ops abound, you should have your camera around your neck anyway, not in your backpack). While I'd appreciate more built-in pockets, there is enough room in this pack to carry a small multi-pocketed pouch to hold extra filters and other gizmos.

So, the NUMBER ONE reason you may want to reconsider purchasing this backpack:

Yesterday, after returning home from a photo field trip using my new backpack, I carefully zipped up the rear compartment and said to my model as I slung the pack from the trunk of the car, "Wow, I could really screw up my lenses if they fell out because I forgot to close the zipper." At that moment, my camera flew from the side compartment, fell three feet and landed on a hard, cold and unforgiving concrete slab.

If you are forgetful, perhaps sometimes a little daft like me, don't buy a pack with more doors than you need. The side-door access is a great feature. You can access your camera while still holding the backpack on one shoulder. But you must remember to close it!

Fortunately--and this is hard to believe--my camera and lens escaped unscathed. Amazing. So, when you hear that stupid is as stupid does, consider that even stupid sometimes gets lucky.

In closing, I'll address some of the comments I have read and add a few points that may not have been covered:

The zippers work well in California beach weather. I can see them becoming stiffer as the temperature drops, but this is not because the zippers are flawed; it's just a matter of physics. This pack contains four zippered compartments in all. Two of those--the one that protects your laptop and the one that gives you access to your camera with lens attached--have rubber faces that meet to hold out water. They stiffen as the temperature drops.

I am 5'8" and this pack is not too long for me.

I bought the S-113 straps so I can carry a bedroll or tripod beneath the pack. It makes you a wide load, yes, but there is no easy way to attach a full-size tripod to this pack vertically.

BEWARE: My laptop (a Hell Inspiron 1520 with 15.4" screen) fits safely and snugly, but it barely fits. Dell's battery protrudes at the back, increasing that dimension from a normal 10 3/4" to 11 3/8". If your computer is a 17", it won't fit if exceeds 1 1/2" thick and is deeper (from front to back) than 11 5/8".

If you work from the trunk of your car as I sometimes do, you will be opening and closing this pack like you would a regular camera bag; but a regular camera bag doesn't have secret side doors. If you suddenly pick a regular camera bag up by the handles, you won't spill your equipment. With this pack, you might.

These things having been said, if you are of at least normal intelligence and take care to zip up your zippers, this is a fantastic and fun item; by far more convenient than any camera bag. It feels good and looks good. It is efficient and sturdy, and will carry a couple of camera bodies plus a flash or two, with lots of those precious and expensive pieces of glass, plus your lunch, a laptop, a reflector and a tripod.

This is a very good product; and I do feel that I got a lot more than I paid for.

This is a great camera/equipment backpack with one problem (more about that later). The pack is well designed and carries a great amount of camera and equipment in the field and has room for a laptop and a jacket/lunch (or whatever).

When hiking the pack when loaded is comfortable and does provide quick access from the side to your camera body and attached lens. There is one problem that limits the use of the pack's design for quick acccess during colder temperatures (20 degrees f and below):

The side quick access flap and the laptop access zippers have a vinyl zipper cover that is designed to waterproof the zippers--works well for waterproofing and during warmer temperatures, while stiff to operate, does allow quick access to your camera. However, when temperatures are on the cool side the zipper(s) get so stiff that in order to access yur camera equipment you have to take the pack off and access the equipment from the from access panel which has a convential zipper and a normal pack-cloth flap for weatherproofing. The result is that when hiking or snowshoeing in colder temperatures, one of the pack's finest features is useless.

So if cold weather is part of your use for this otherwise great pack--beware--you will need to give up on the quick access the side access panel is designed to give you. Let's hope Tamrac corrects this problem.

As you can imagine it got heavy but it balanced the load well. It was easier to deal with when I stashed the non-essentials (laptop, flash, etc) in my hotel safe. It would have been nice to have the litle chest strap but it sill worked out ok.

In general the side flap was great, it made it very easy to get my camera in and out very quickly and I didn't have to give up the extra storage space. I had no problem even with the huge 29-300mm lens. The only drawback was that the zippers get very difficult to open and close if they get cold. It was about -5 (c) in Beijing and it took quite a bit of effort to open the side flap. The problem was the rubber they had embedded into the zipper (I assume it is to help keep out raid)

The only other thing I didn't like about it was the only option it had for carrying a mono pod. I was able to strap it to the bottom in a horizontal position. This was fine when I was walking around in wide open spaces but I ran into problems on the crowded subways. Probably won't be a problem for most people.

I recently visited a local Camera Exchange to find a backpack that will hold the following items: D90, 18-200mm, 10-24mm, 35mm, SB-600, 17" laptop, and several accessories. I narrowed down my decision to the "Tamrac Adventure 9" and the "Tamrac Aero Speed Pack 85". I was really intrigued by the design of the Aero 85 because of the side access and the overall great aesthetics of the bag. However, I quickly noticed some glaring differences in the construction of the two bags (See Below).

In the end I chose to purchase the "Tamrac Adventure 9". It does not have a quick access feature like the Aero 85, but the laptop compartment is side loading (shoulder straps connect to main body of the backpack) with more room than the Aero 85. This backpack also has a sternum strap and a waist strap. In addition the camera compartment has three additional clips on the outside just incase your zipper ever desides to give out. The camera compartment is still large for a compact camera, but the body is much more stable and secure. Also, the Adventure 9 seems to have more strap padding and back padding than the Aero 85.

Tamrac Aero Speed Pack 85 (Issues):

1) The shoulder straps for the backpack connect to the laptop compartment instead of the main body of the backpack. This means the weight of the backpack is being transfered to the zipper for the laptop compartment. This has and will lead to premature failure of the backpack according to other reviewers on this site. This is simply a bad design. Most quality backpacks that have a top opening laptop compartment have the shoulder straps arc over the top of the opening and attach to the main body of the backpack (ex. Swiss Army).

2) The laptop compartment barely fits a 17" laptop. You have to push in the corners of a 17" laptop to make it fit in the rounded top. You can find a video of this on youtube ().

3) The camera compartment is of course built for side entry, which will be a problem for compact cameras "DXX". I asked the store clerk to let me borrow his D90 with the kit lense installed to see how the bag fit the camera. The compartment for the camera is too big for compact models. The compact camera body and lens will sag down at a 45 degree angle unless you have a long lens "6 inches" installed on the body. This might not bother some people, but I do not want any undo stress put on the body/lens connection while hiking/walking. This range of movement will allow the camera/lens to move freely up and down in the backpack.

4) The backpack does not have a waist strap or sternum strap, which is fine if you are just doing casual walking and dont want a bunch of extra straps flapping around. However, if you have a decent amount of equipment in the bag you atleast need the sternum strap.

I got this bag right after finishing school in Dec. Since I graduated I do not need to take a bag with me as much as I did when I was a student, so I haven't used it a lot. I read about people having trouble with their 15" laptops not fitting, I wasn't worried about mine fitting cause I got a 12" laptop, but I tried my parents 15" Fujitsu to see how it fit. Its a pretty thick computer. It was very very tight. Maybe it would stretch out the pocket a bit over time, but it was a real pain to get it in and out. The tags on the bag do say fits MOST 15" laptops.

I came across this bag at Best Buy. Before I saw it I had been planning on getting a Lowepro laptop and camera backpack, since I have one Lowepro camera backpack which I mostly like. Problem with the Lowepro bags were that I couldn't find them in any stores to look at, and the two models I was looking at online were $150-190, and I didn't even really like them that much. Also I don't need to take my camera gear with me all the time, only when taking trips. Anyway, this bag looked well made and it was only around $50. After spending some time online and in stores looking at bags while I waited for my computer to arrive I decided on this one.

I had worried a little about how to pack all my camera gear if I have this bag when I travel, I didn't want to have to take this bag and a camera bag. But as it turns out, the big compartment in this bag is big enough to hold the padded insert from my Lowepro Rover AW camera backpack.

Pros:

Lots of pockets, lots of space.

Mesh pockets on the side are good for drinks.

Seems well made, but I haven't really put it to the test yet, and I haven't owned it long enough to see how it will hold up over time.

No waist belt. (some might consider that a con...)

Stands up by its self.

Compression straps (I think they're called) on the sides.

Cons:

All my complaints seem to be in one compartment. In one of the compartments on the front, which has slots for various small items, there are no pen slots. I really like pen slots. I put my pens and pencils in one of the wider pockets, but if the bag gets turned upside down they all fall out.

Same compartment: all the wider pockets are too narrow for anything I want to put in them, such as business card case, electronic dictionary, etc. It could just be me that thinks they are too narrow, but I think other people will feel the same way.

Choice of colors. I read on Amazon that the gray model is more like silver, so I got red. I would have preferred all black.

Could use some more padding at the top of the computer compartment.

These things I listed as cons are really minor though. Just the things that could have made it an absolutely perfect bag.

I am sure I will have more to say about this bag once I get to take it on a trip.

UPDATE 3/11/08 I have had the bag for about a year now. Its held up well, but it doesn't see daily use. I took it on one trip to Korea and Japan. I like the big open pocket on the front of the bag. Its good for holding things you want easy access to. It looks like the bag is available in blue now. Silver and red were the only choices when I bought it last year. My other complains when I first wrote the review are still the same. Also, the bag no longer stands up by its self as well as it did when it was new. I still really like the bag.

This is an excellent backback. I did a lot of research on what I needed in a laptop tote. I wasn't sure about how it would handle as I traveled through the airports. It handled extremely well as I found out.

The great points:

1) Incredible amount of room with lots of pockets.

2) A separate compartment for the laptop which makes it easier to pull the laptop out while going through security. The strap holding the laptop in is also very easy to open and it keeps the laptop from moving around.

3) The open pocket so that you can stuff itinieries and paperbacks in there as you get on and off the plane.

4) The shoulder straps are easily adjustable and very comfortable.

5) The padding is also very comfortable, I sometimes forget that I have it on.

6) Cool little pocket atop the pack for MP3 players or for wallets.

7) Hard core handle up top for easy and confident transfer.

Not so cool:

1) The small doodad bag up front where you are supposed to stash keys, cell phones, pens and pencils does not have a double zipper so it can easily be wide open without you knowing.

2) The second handle on top of the pack is skimpy and makes no sense.

Overall, I love it and I enjoy using it as I travel about. The pack is very well designed and holds some very pleasant and surprising features.

I wanted to follow up the reviewer that said a 15.4" computer will not fit in this pack. Because of this review, I took my HP dv5000, 15.4" notebook to Best Buy to see if this backpack would be suitable for me. My computer fit in it just fine. Perhaps Wenger has made adjustments to the design, perhaps the reviewer got a lemon, or perhaps not all 15.4" screeened laptops are within the tolerances that Wenger desgined for. Regardless my 15.4" computer fit in this pack just fine and I will be buying it.

I absolutely LOVE THIS BACKPACK!!! In the months it took me to find this product I probably tried every other brand of backpack on the market and none of them come close to the comfort, capacity and styling of this bag. It is well built. I fly from Fl to Ca frequently and carry a Fujitsu T4020 laptop, along with literally a ton of books. With my previous bags my back would ache under the weight, but with this one I hardly feel like I have it on. It fits perfectly under my seat even on the small commuter plane. I particularly like the padded compartment (intended for an ipod or CD player) which I use for my digital voice recorders and camera. I also like the way the padding supports the weight yet still allows for the air to circulate -an important factor for those living in hot climates to consider.

After wearing a pack for most of my adult life (I'm U.S. Marine), I've searched for the best civilian pack to carry the daily stuff in for day trips. This is by far the best design I've seen yet. I've tried many cheap one, ones that I've rebuild, even old military packs. All either lacked quality of construction or were uncomfortable to wear. Dakine 13-Litre Anya Pack

I ordered this bag to fit my Dell XPS 15z which is 15.5" wide and it does not even come close to fitting. However, I really like the bag and kept it to use for my tablet and as a carry on, etc. It is very good quality and I like the pattern a lot. But I was pretty disappointed that even though it "fits most 15" laptops" mine was nowhere near fitting. As other reviewers have stated, some of Dakine's bags have the drawback of not using extending zippers, the zippers take an inch on either side from the width of the bag, so even if your laptop would fit dimensionally, the zippers keep it from doing so.

I have a 15.6 inch hp laptop and it doesn't fit. I kept the bag anyway because its pretty and useful for other things. If you want it specifically for a laptop I would definitely check out the specs on dakine's website first

I really love this bag. It is solid construction and just enough room for my computer and a few other essential items. It is very slim, which I LOVE! I can see myself using this bag for years and years.

My ONLY complaint so far is that my 15" MacBook Pro barely fits. It fits well in the main bag, but the zippered top has about 1" on either side (structural zipper support) that makes the bag opening slightly too small to get the laptop through! It is a struggle to take my computer in and out of the bag. It it really annoying. However, I love this bag so much, I deal with it.

I use the Black Diamond Hollowpoint day pack for trad climbing in Yosemite and for big wall free climbs. It holds everything I need on the wall including water, food, guide book, headlamps, camera, sun block, approach shoes, etc. It's super durable and very well constructed and lasts many climbing seasons. If you want to go as light as possible but still bring the essentials, this pack is perfect!

It is minimalist. All loading is done from the top. It does have a small zipper opening on the front with pen pockets and clip. Materials and zippers are of great quality.

Logitech Kinetik 15.4 Briefcase

I recently got myself this computer bag as with the change over from 17 inch to 15.4 i felt the need to have a similar fitting one again.

This bag enticed me because of the use of materials and the fact that it has the computer in the middle of the outer compartment. The compartment all have a number of little pouches in which you can stick certain accessories. The fact tha the case is 'semi' hard makes it easy to transport headphones and other fragile stuff. It also holds just enough emergency clothing for when travelling intercontinental and your check in luggage has taken a trip of its own.

The bag is not really suitable for when oyu only need something for a portable and some little thingies like charger a few DVD's and a folder. It is more for the person who has to carry more stuff with him-/herself or who is travelling and wants to keep important things at hand.

A minor point is that the shoulder strap makes an itchy sound but as long as you walk in noisy environments that is not a problem.

The finishing of the bag is well taken care of. On one side there is a slide that you can use when travelling and having a roller with you. Always nice to know that it is securely fastened.

The bag is clearly marked as suitable for an Apple MAcbook Pro 15.4 but apparently a 17 will fit as well. I am surprised that not more Apple owners have one as its design is in line with the cool designs of Apple. Okay the logo of Logitech is a bit cheesy but I can forgive that the designers of Logitech

One last thing: I do not know how it is for others but I am surprised by the great diferrence in pricing between shops. Normally Amazon is one of the better prices ones but on this occasion i passed by because I could get it in a Dutch shops more than 50 per cent cheaper. So the for the price is bought it, it is a steal and the latter shows as well that it can save you money surfing around for the best price.

The Logitech Kinetik 15.4 Briefcase is one of two all new notebook cases from a company that prides itself on making some of the best computer accessories available. Advertised by Logitech as "advanced transport of notebooks" the Kinetik 15.4 Briefcase features stylish padding, impressive cargo pockets, and a design unlike anything you've seen before. But is this briefcase really a must-have notebook case, or should Logitech have stuck to making keyboards? Let's take a look.

In late June of last year Logitech surprised notebook users everywhere by announcing a new line of notebook cases priced at $120.00 The Logitech name has long been associated with some of the best keyboards and mice available ... but notebook cases? This is one type of product no one expected to see from Logitech.

Build and Design

Logitech is well known for innovative design, and the Kinetik bags look like something taken straight from of an episode of Battlestar Galactica. This briefcase would be equally at home as a prop in a sci-fi movie as it is in your workplace.

One of the main design elements of the Kinetik line is the "exo-shell" construction: a rigid, shock absorbing exterior material that protects the laptop and accessories from damage yet is still a reasonably "forgiving" (almost bouncy) material when you're carying it on your side. The exo-shell is made of a polyurethane/ethylene vinyl acetate composite. In short, it's sort of like thin tire rubber ... without the tread. The rest of the Kinetic is made of a durable black ballistic nylon exterior and smooth orange polyester interior pockets.

Notice I said the colors are black and orange. That was not a typo. Most users will either think this color combination is stylish or the color combination will remind them too much of Halloween. I must confess after using the Kinetik for several weeks I started thinking about bite size Snickers candy bars and jack-o-lanterns.

Both the side compartments feature wrap-around zippers which turn the sides into expanding compartments for easy access. There are common file folder sleeves and mesh pockets on one side and padded cargo pockets on the other side to secure and organize all your valuables and accessories.

One of the side panels is actually a cushioned back panel which adds support when the briefcase is carried against body. I really like that idea and I wish Logitech made both sides like this so that the briefcase had padding on both sides no matter how you carry it. The cushioned back panel also serves as a trolley sleeve when you need to attach your briefcase to some rolling luggage. The only thing I didn't like about the cushioned back panel is that Logitech chose to stitch an ugly Kinetik logo on that side of the case.

In Use

One nice feature about the Kinetik is that it is designed to be "self standing" so the briefcase won't fall over when you set it down. Unfortunately, this didn't always happen. Since the main notebook sleeve in the middle of the briefcase is located slighty to one side a heavy notebook was often enough to send the briefcase falling on its side. Likewise, since the main storage compartments are all on one side the briefcase is off balance when you have a mouse, digital camera, USB thumbdrives, and cell phone inside the briefcase ... which sends the bag falling over to one side ( very bad ).

The padded cargo pockets provided a bit too much emphasis on structure and organization for my tastes. Although I am glad to have the storage pockets, I really didn't need Logitech to label each of the pockets with pictographs of what should be placed in each pocket. I suppose only troublemakers like me would want to put a mouse in the pocekt labeled for headphones.

The shoulder strap material, which felt like it might be a gel-cushioned pad, was not particularly comfortable. A neoprene shoulder strap would have been much more forgiving when the case was fully loaded with a notebook and accessories.

Although the build quality of the Kinetik briefcase is excellent, the shoulder strap hardware did present one minor problem: noise. The metal clips on each end of the shoulder strap created annoying "squeaks" whenever I moved. After about five minutes of listening to the high-pitched metal grinding noise which made me spray the entire briefcase with WD40.

Conclusion

Overall my feelings about the Logitech Kinetik 15.4 Briefcase were mixed. On one hand I'm attracted to the innovative design and quality construction. There is also plenty of room inside the briefcase, enough for even a second notebook. However, the Kinetik isn't as impressive as it could be thanks to an uncomfortable shoulder strap, noisy hardware, and a few minor design elements that make it a little less attractive in my opinion.

Bottom line, the Kinetik briefcase is a solid notebook case with a stand out design. If you replace the shoulder strap and appreciate the non-traditional design it makes one great case.

This is the first laptop computer case I've had that also doubles as a briefcase for some files and a book or two. It's a perfect fit for my 15" MacBook Pro and offers it maximum protection. It also has an abundance of velcro-sealed pockets for accessories like iPods, AC adapter, etc, as well a pockets for pens and pencils and a place to secure one's keys. Eagle Creek Travel Gear Pack-It Slim Kit Carryon

The Eagle Creek Pack-It Slim carry-on is an excellent product for those who need to pack light and tight. Keep in mind that the word "slim" is in the name, and it definitely lives up to it. The Pack-It Slim has 3 pockets in each of its folding sections, one of which expands to hold larger items like bottles of shampoo, et al. It has a handy built-in hook for hanging the bag in places where there isn't sink space in which to lay it.

While this bag holds quite a bit, be warned that it might not hold as much as you think...not if you want it to close properly. If the bottom pouch is fully loaded, there isn't enough room to fold the top flap over and attach it to the Velcro strips. Having such limited space has forced me to be creative when packing my toiletry bag. I can't just toss in a full-size bottle of cologne; instead I have to spray some into a smaller bottle in order to get it to fit. The same goes for a travel-size can of shaving creme, or even a normal bar of soap. Eagle Creek might have benefited from a larger "connecting" piece of material between the top and middle flaps, as well as longer Velcro strips in order to accommodate a more fully loaded bag.

The Pack-It Slim is definitely a contender if you're looking for a well-designed, compact toiletry bag. If you're the type of person who likes to pack half of your medicine cabinet, however, I suggest you find something a bit larger.

Above all I find that this is a quality product.

I would like it to be able to close in a better way: It just have two small velcros to close.

So, basically, if it has lot of things inside, it won't be able to close at all.

The system for the hanger is great. It retract so it's not outside when you are not using it.

The interior is very good. Seems to be really durable.

I find that this is great for traveling, it just can carry the things I need when I'm on the road (some shampoo, deodorant, soap, several accessories, etc).

I got this slim kit because I got a new Eagle Creek bag recently and needed a smaller Dopp kit. I'm a pretty big fan of this one after using it on several trips now. The Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon-II Backpack is a great pack. It provides typical Maxpedition quality in a rugged, well designed, extremely strong and durable product that has MOLLE attachments to add gear as necessary.

The Pygmy Falcon-II Backpack is great for day hikes and even minimalist over night camping where water will not be an issue. It holds approximately 1400 cubic inches of gear which should be plenty for a day hike. With a thin profile you will be able to trail blaze through bush with no problem. The "Y" compression strap helps to keep everything in place.

Side Pouches

The side pockets will each hold a 32 oz. Nalgene bottle. If water is going to be an issue this pack may not be your first option since it is not very compatible for a hydration system. But you do have options...if water is an issue you can always attach one or two Maxpedition Mini Rollypoly Folding Dump Pouch which will each hold a 32 oz. Nalgene bottle. You have just doubled your water capability. The modularity offers many configurations depending on your needs.

Shoulder Straps

The shoulder straps are well padded and capable of attaching a 4" or 5" flashlight sheath and a single sheath for a multi-tool. These add ons are also available from Maxpedition and are well worth the price. It comes with a chest strap for added comfort.

Main Compartment

The main compartment is a nice size and opens with two zippers in a clam shell fashion allowing you to completely open the pack to get what you need as opposed to taking out all of your gear to find the needed item. The main compartment is large enough to hold a first aid kit, pocket rocket with fuel, food, extra socks, a light jacket and more.

Front Pouch and Slip Pocket

The front pouch will hold a lot of your smaller gear and the slip pocket will hold thin items such as a map, compass, fleece hat, headlamp, etc.

Maxpedition products are designed for hard use, durability and a long product life. Many of the other larger companies cannot and do not match the quality of Maxpedition. I highly recommend the Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon-II Backpack.

this pack is OK, but before you buy, consider a few of my beefs, and take the 'flexibility' or 'durability' claims with a grain of salt:

1. zippers are not as rugged to match the hype of this gear's 'durability'

2. you can see through the fabric from the inside of the pack to the outside on the side panels

3. there is a handle, but no way to stow or remove the shoulder straps quite annoying!

4. mismatched zippers (dualand single-zipper arrangements)

5. missing tabs for d-rings on bottom of pack

6. inability to remove bottle sacks on sides of the pack

7. insanely expensive accessories

8. obfuscated, hidden warranty info on manufacturer's site (you won't find it through one or two mouse clicks or a search)

9. 'lifetime' warranty has many caveats with a minefield of exclusions (IOW, not a 'no-questions-asked warranty')

i got around a few of the limitations by going to alternative manufacturers for accessories (pouches, etc.); i also installed some D-rings, and will have to install at least two more underneath the pack to allow flexibility in carry of clothing, tarp, or other round items

in all, this product does suit my needs, but it is not perfect; on the plus side, the pack does supports Molle gear and snap pouches; there are at least four areas for these accessories; i would have liked to see some velcro strap attachment points, but that's just a personal pref

it's a smallish pack, but can hold enough stuff for a weekend or outing on the trail or pier; we'll see how the material holds up, but i fear for the thin fabric on the side panels

This is a perfect pack! I have Blackhawk bags, packs and cases, Camelbak packs, Tumi bags, etc. but Maxpedition is what I use on a day to day basis. I purchased a Maxpedition bag almost a year ago and started using it for a computer case. I liked it so much I gave away my leather Tumi computer case! I got rid of other computer cases. I then purchased another Maxpedition case and started using it as a range bag. I then gave my other three Blackwater bags to family members for their range bags and kept the Maxpedition for myself. I then purchased a PYGMY Falcon II backpack and carried it for times when I go hiking, etc. It's like a day pack on steroids and has a perfect balance and ability to load the gear without hassle. It's not a large or small pack, but more of a medium pack. I don't use it daily, but I have smaller Maxpedition bags and cases that carry things like phone chargers, notebooks, etc. and move them from bag to bag depending upon the need. If you see me I'll have a Maxpedition pack, bag or case nearby, carrying anything from a computer for work, stuff to take on the range or whatever I need. They just work...and work well!

I was excited at first when I ordered this backpack. I had intended on using it for hikes and other outdoors activities. However, I was surprised when it arrived that the photo was not representative of the actual color. For this item, the title does not match the photographyou are going to receive a SUPER green backpack, not a lighter grey/green item.

Additionally, the dimensions seemed massivethe website lists it, however in person it seemed even bigger. The material was rough, felt thin and tacky, and there was a disappointing lack of features inside the backpack to warrant its high price. I tried the backpack out by stuffing it and wearing it a bitI'm tall but a bit on the stocky frame, the backpack looked large and ungainly on me, was not particularly comfortable. So for me, it was a no go, and I returned it.

The pro's are that if you don't care too much about organization, you can stuff quite a bit into the backpack. You lose the rectangular look if you overstuff however, and that in the future will cause heavy sagging and stretch out the bag. So just be careful!

This laptop bag is perfect! It looks great and it fits my larger laptop with room to spare. There is a hard shell under the fabric which is great. I can also fit my power cord and paperwork in each of the side pockets. This bag is also much lighter in weight than my previous one. I'd give his bag five stars on appearance, quality and functionality.

This is a beautiful, well constructed laptop bag but I found it to be too small for my 15 inch laptop. Maybe it was my mistake, but the measurements stated in the description are 17x12x2.5 inches so I thought that my 15 inch laptop would have plenty of room. Well, those measurements are outside dimensions not inside which are actually 16 x 11...one inch smaller in both directions. I can barely get the bag zipped and there is absolutely no room for any accessories such as a charger or mouse. As much as I love the bag, it will be going back.

I chose this for a roughly 17" wide laptop mainly because I have Vera Bradley items already and this print is very cute. However, the case is not thick enough for my big battery on my laptop so in order for it to fit I must put the big end at the top but it won't zip all the way shut. it works though so i would recommend it if you don't have a battery that protrudes a lot.
