THE GOOD...

Tough nylon, welded zippers, highly water resistant, great organization, excellent padding, awesome ventilation, hydration bladder pocket, deep water bottle side pockets (No dropped bottles while biking!), yellow interior helps you see deep inside the bag in low lighting (Thoughtful!), zipper for main compartment allows you to zip almost to bottom (convenient!), exterior compartment pocket perfect for iPad with case, exterior sections great for gym shoes, skates, boxing gear, yoga mat, and (don't laugh) laundry. Very flexible carry options, and looks good.

THE BAD...

Suspension system designed for maximum airflow/breath-ability but pushes load pretty far away from your back. Not good. You want heavy loads as close to your spine as possible to stay balanced and prevent injury. (Think about holding a milk carton to your chest for 5 mins vs straight out in front of you for 5 mins...) The hip padding makes up for this somewhat, but in my opinion for loads upwards of 30 lbs just take out the wire-frame and the bag will straighten a bit making the load feel lighter.

THE UGLY...

This bag is comfy up to 30lbs for me. Great weekend stuffer for clothes, personal items, electronic gadgets --excellent suitcase replacement. Not for super heavy loads or week-long excursions into the wild. Suspension system leaves more to be desired. Not for someone with lower back problems. For under $100 a good buy, and as a 20-30lb combo day pack+gym bag (Def!) or decent weekender. Haven't used this in hot weather but may give in more stars in 90F+...

Ok I probably didn't need a pack this big yet. But I'm 6'5 and so one with a long frame seemed a good idea. Plus, I'm in Texas right now and the open back allowing air through is just great.

What it could benefit from is more organization in the interior pockets. It just needs a few smaller open pockets and zippers inside to put it over the top.

Otherwise everything else has been well thought out. This is definitely a full weekender if not for longer hikes.

Too large for a day trip.

I picked this up for my son's first year of school. It has lasted the entire year with no issues.

We purchased this OVERPRICED backpack for my son in September. It seemed like it was nice...fabric is good quality, etc. He is in 2nds grade, and has no textbooks to carry...just some papers and paperback books. I was looking for a bagpack-type solution to be able to bring gym clothes plus a towel and textbooks all in a single container, and this seemed to fit the bill perfectly. I was able to fit a spare set of clothing, large bottle of water, a laptop, and textbooks in this bagpack/duffle and still have it be somewhat comfortable on my back while riding.

This pack features a handle in the center to be carried like a dufflebag, and it also contains stowaway bagpack air-mesh straps that clip onto metal rings using metal carabiners.

It has a 36 Liter capacity with 2 main compartments, the smaller one is for a laptop and features a cellphone pocket as well as a small meshed pocket right next to it (can fit a coiled cell phone cable). The larger compartment is would be where you would put all your clothing/gear/etc into. The front of the backpack has 3 zippers, the largest one in the middle with a small storage space to fit a cellphone, wallet, keys together. The 2 smaller are located on the lower opposite sides of the bagpack and can fit smaller things like earbuds or a keys.

The bag looks stylish, and things like the inner-material/metal clips and carabiners seem to be quality, however my main issue with this bag (Which is also one of the most important parts) is the zippers.

Within 1 week of normal use, the zippers on the largest compartment began to come unstitched from the bag at one side, and eventually completely came off resulting in the zipper handles themselves coming off the bag. What use is a bagpack without zippers! I gave this bag typical use, and it failed on me pretty quickly. I also noticed that the stitches on the inside of the pack were already beginning to become frayed.

Overall the design and functionality are there, but I can't recommend this bag for typical use because the quality is lacking and its just too delicate to meet the rigors of a real dufflebag or bagpack. It is possible that I had received a dud and someone was sleeping on the job, but the Made-in-China label definitely doesn't help it out either. Alpinestars supposedly gives this bag a 2-year warranty, but unless you rarely use this bag, I suspect many will try to utilize the warranty. It hurts me to give an Alpinestars product a low rating, but I do feel that's what this product deserves and I will be returning it to find a more suitable bagpack for my needs.

Toshiba 13.3-Inch Neoprene Case

Recently bought my laptop and after many reviews and searching, this was the winner. The laptop fits perfectly and has enough room for the AC adapter and wireless mouse. Very nice product, very happy with it.

I purchased this case for my new Toshiba Portege R705. Except for one thing, it's perfect. It fits the laptop's widescreen proportions exactly, with a little leeway so you don't have to struggle to get the computer in and out. It's extremely lightweight (9.6 ounces, which is important when the computer itself only weighs 3.1 pounds). The handles are comfortably padded without being bulky or heavy. It fits into my regular briefcase. I would have loved to keep the case and use it.

What is the fatal flaw? It stinks! Literally. The side and bottom edges are made of rubberized material that reeks to high heaven. It smells worse than a tire store (perhaps the rubber gives off its smell even more easily than a new tire because it's soft). I was hoping that the odor would dissipate once the case was out of the shipping box, but I have had it hanging up in an open area in my house for three days and I can still smell it 6 feet away. If I put it inside my regular briefcase it imparts its smell to the briefcase and everything in it.

Toshiba brags about this rubberized edge, saying it affords extra cushioning. I fail to see that it does; a slightly thicker neoprene would have worked better for that purpose, and in any case the seams themselves provide some extra protection at the corners. The rubber edge also makes it harder to slide the case into and out of my briefcase.

Perhaps other users are not as nauseated by a strong rubber odor as I am, but this case is unusable by me, and it's going back. That's a shame, when it has so many virtues.

Since this is neoprene, it really is just a sleeve, not really a case. It is somewhat flimsy (like a sleeve) but for the price, you can't really expect too much. I bought it because it has a handle for carrying around and a zippered pocket that can hold the charger, a wireless mouse, external hard drive and any other wires without it becomes too bulky (depending on how you put it all in). Overall, yes, it does have a smell, but it will go away after you air it out.

It also has a nice gray grip material along the sides of the bag which is kind of cool. The zippers are sturdy and not likely to break even if you stuff it.

It was a little roomy for my 13" Dell XPS, but I plan on putting other paper in here as well so it won't really jostle around. Pretty much just needed something to put my laptop in so it wouldn't scratch.

Overall, I am happy with the purchase, but I am always wary of giving a full 5 stars unless I am completely in love with it. Like previously stated, this case does the job fairly well.

When the case arrived it did stink but within 2 days it was fine. This is an excellent case that provides great protection assuming your responsible enough with your equipment. It had a piece of plastic styrofoam like material that was inside. I left that in there to provide a bit more portection against the screen since I have a Toshiba Protege Ultrabook and they got screens you can literally bow. I took it with me to Alaska going through the security check points was a breeze (I didn't even take my laptop out of the case. Just put it in the tray and through the xray scanner).

This bag is sturdily made and looks nice, but the inside is just one cavernous section. It looks like it would be good for carrying books, but if you have small items, they'll have to be stashed in the outside pockets. It's a good quality bag, though, for a very reasonable price.

Choice of size is important to understand that it's your size in addition to laptop. Whatever shirt size you wear choose same size back pack. The large Built NY backpack fits OK for me, I'm 5' 9-1/2" and weigh about 265 lbs.

The day after I got it, I tried putting my 15" unibody MacBook Pro with Golla sleeve in the main compartment and it was a snug fit. Seeing as this variation of the pack should be able to carry 17" notebooks as well, I reckon that if I put the MacBook Pro in without the Golla sleeve, it would be a nice fit. Thing is, if you want to put anything else in there with the notebook, you might, depending on the object, wind up scratching it or something. If this is not an issue for you, then no worries.

As for the side pocket for accessories, I was expecting like a little pocket that can contain power bricks, power cords, and some knick knacks but was pleasantly surprised upon closer inspection, to find out that the side pocket goes into a separate compartment (in front of the notebook) and is composed of pretty much the entire backpack and part of the lower straps. Nice. But as with the main compartment, if you put them in a water-tight plastic "sleeve" like I do, they will be a tight fit. If you put the items in one at a time without the sleeve and they fit nicely and don't really add much to the bulk of the pack.

The fit of the pack is nice and it hugs my sides and back real well, very streamlined. You can even secure the sternum strap if you aren't using it so it doesn't flap around and get caught on things.

As the title of this review says, it's a nice, minimalist pack and if you just want to lug around your notebook, some accessories and knick knacks, then this is the pack for you.

I've only had this backpack for about a month and I've been very gentle with it(as it houses my new macbook). Its tearing at the bottom corners at the seems. I like how the backpack looks, but I'm pretty disappointed in the build. I might be able to fix it, but I'm probably going to end up replacing it soon.

I bought this sleeve for the Dell Inspiron 11.6" laptop, and I'm pretty happy with it. I was looking for a sleeve with a very snug fit, and this fits my laptop perfectly. There isn't any room for the power cord once the laptop's in the sleeve, but that's what I wanted. The case itself isn't really padded; it's just the thick fabric (which is tough and durable), so if you're looking for something with a little more cushion, you might want to get something else. The design on the case is pretty, and, even though I've only had it for about a week, I can tell it's made well and it's going to last for a while. It's a great deal, the price is good, and I'm really happy with my purchase.

Right now there are not a lot of options for the 11 inch macbook air, I picked this one because I liked the design and it's product description was the right size for my mba. This cover does fairly well, the only extra room is due to the thinness of the mba. That said, I do wish there was a big more padding to this cover. I'm not completely convinced this is the best protection for a mba, but If you are planning to use this cover for a netbook, I'm sure it will work great.

Crumpler Local Identity (S) PHOTO

One of my many hats is "professional photographer", a side issue of being a photographer is the never ending search for the "perfect" camera bag. I have settled for some Tenba Air cases for real shoot gear capacity..

However for my light travel/street backpack the slot have been open. until now.

The Crumpler Local Identity comes with the "heaven" padded insert. the insert have enough room for my Leica M with 35mm and a spare lens. There is actually enough room to fit one sideways on the other side also, but even though i do it, I do not recommend it.

The S size is advertised as a 13" laptop size, however my MacBookPro 15" fit perfectly in the S.

There is a nifty zipper fake bottom which can be closed to prevent stuff from dropping down and mingling with the camera padded case.

The top is roll down with a waterproof zipper, inside is a sleeve against the back and all the way to the top for the laptop, you can comfortably carry a laptop and camera at the same time.

On each side is a vertical zipper for easy access, I put the camera case so I can reach if by sliding the bag down on my left shoulder. On the other side I put a padded lens sleeve for one extra lens. Both of the side openings have a quick connect lock for fast access and it is possible to close it while leaving the zippers open.. (just remember they are open)

This is a LIGHT pack, room for camera + 1 lens in the padded sleeve, and another one on the other side if you have a separate sleeve. you "could" put a sleeve on the top for more gear.. but then you might as well get a bigger bag.

I have been using the Local Identity S to go to the office because it take my MBP 15" and my street camera with a spare lens in serious comfort and padded safety.

If anyone of the crumpler designers read this I would love a XS size, shave off a little size and make it iPad size. with the same camera heaven insert. Thanks guys.

So is this a recommended pack.? I have a hard time using the word "recommended" since this backpack is such a specialized creature, I absolutely love mine, it is brilliantly designed and so well made, it do not swallow huge amounts of lenses, this works great for me but your needs may be different than mine.

I should say first that I'm always in search of the "perfect" bag. Since it is an item I use daily, I'm happy to spend money for quality, and I'd hoped that the Crumpler Local Identity (S) would be worth it. Sadly, it simply isn't.

First, the good parts:

The bag is reasonably comfortable (I'm 5'5"). It holds (snugly) a 13" MacBook Air in a Waterfield Designs sleeve, a Canon T3i with Sigma 24mm prime and flash (only the camera and lens fit in the little sack, and quite snugly). Maybe also a pouch or two about the size of a pencil case. That's about it. With all that, there's not much room for your lunch. The design is overall pretty reasonable: a top-loading pouch with a zippered divider to separate into two compartments, and two side zippers that allow access to the pouch. It's not terribly heavy, it's waterproof, and looks pretty good. In black, it doesn't really call attention to itself; I can't speak to the other colors.

Now, the not so good:

The main feature of the pack is rapid access to camera gear. Swing the sack over one shoulder, slide it around, unclip the side clip, undo the zipper and slide the camera out of the protective pouch. At least in theory. In practice, the problem comes when running into the side zippers, which curve pretty drastically. Putting zippers on a curved track is generally a recipe for disaster, and Crumpler, as good as they are, can't do anything about this. The first bag I had, the zipper went off the rails within the first week. Because the zippers are "watertight" there isn't any way to repair the bag at home. So it was back to Crumpler for an exchange, which was pretty seamless, but annoying. Now, on bag 2, I'm really careful with the zippers, and it's still pretty clearly a showstopper. There's no way to run the zipper up one-handed -one hand has to grasp the bottom of the case to help guide the zipper up its track. Admittedly, this sounds like a first world problem, but it means that there's no way to quickly close the bag while holding the camera that you've just pulled out.

Second, the female parts of the clips that close the sides of the bag aren't well secured. On one side, one of the little plastic inserts (three prong) that holds it in broke. Not surprisingly, a week afterwards, it was gone. So now I've got one side of the snap flying free. Again, no real way to repair it unless you can find the precise part somewhere. I couldn't.

Lastly, the top folds down and snaps shut. At the point of the fold, the bag material can't put up with the strain of being folded/unfolded and has started to wear through. I expect this will mean the end of the waterproofing when it does.

So the search for the perfect bag continues. I had high hopes for Crumpler, and shelled out for what is clearly meant to be a premium bag. Because of these fundamental flaws, and the way it has worn over the year, I recommend looking elsewhere.

Baggallini Messenger Bag

I got this bag as a gift and it's been my travel companion ever since. Its many compartments keep belongings organized and easily accessible, and I always know where everything is. Since compartments are all zippered, everything is secure. Another advantage is that it's discrete enough to double as a handbag (my sling bag is black), so no need to stuff extra weight in my suitcase. The nylon is rugged and resistant, zippers are good quality. I should know: I've been using this bag a lot and not being exactly kind to it.

I don't have any clanging zippers, but did find that the adjustable strap keeps slipping through the metal holder (I like the bag at waist length, close to the body, and the strap is long), perhaps because the nylon it is made of is so smooth. I solved this by getting a cheap metal barrette and closing it around the strap right below the holder (it works!). Another interesting aspect is that the bag is a lot more comfortable to carry when slung over the right shoulder -not made for lefties! I'm a lefty, but this doesn't bother me.

I was thrilled with this messenger bag. We took it to Disney. Passes fit nicely in the strap zippered compartment and were easy to reach at all times. The side compartment fit my cell phone which also was in easy reach but far enough away from the passes not to deactivate them. I did not need to carry a wallet as the inside front compartments held things nicely. I also appreciated the bottled water compartment on the side. It made water a quick reach. I love the main compartment, it is big enough to carry cameras, etc. Going to a theme park sometimes means carrying maps, etc. The zippered compartment to the back of the bag was perfect for this. The best part was that it was light and convenient and I could alternate between carrying it on my shoulder and across my chest for a messenger bag. In the past my neck, shoulder and back is always hurting at the theme parks by the end of the day. Didn't have this happen once during a 8 day trip! Love this bag and highly recommend it!

I did a lot of research before deciding to purchase a Baggallini messenger bag; I wanted something roomy enough to carry books and various other items, but not as big or cumbersome as a regular messenger bag. The Baggallini fits the bill in both style and function. Like another reviewer of the same bag, I find that the shoulder strap slips, so the bag hangs lower than it should on a petite frame like mine, but this is not really a problem. The Baggallini has a LOT of room for a bag its size; multiple pockets and places to stash things, and I especially love the shoulder strap mobile phone 'pocket'. I can easily carry three medium-sized books and still have plenty of space for my wallet and other sundry items. I really like the mesh interior (a bright orange-red in the espresso bag) because it allows you to find things without having to rummage around. I also like the snap-on key ring holder; a bonus for someone who is continually losing their keys! I don't find that the zipper tabs make much noise; or if they do, I don't notice it. I am so taken with this bag that I will probably order a couple of others in different colours. I feel terribly stylish when I wear it.

I bought this bag about two weeks ago in preparation for my trip to the UK at the end of December based on the great user reviews. I tested it out on a day trip to Disneyland a few days back and had a terrible time with it. My back was killing me! I realized that this bag was not made for short people at all! I adjusted the straps as tight as they could go, but the bag still hung way too low. I am 5'2" and it needs to be about 2 inches higher to fit perfectly and not cause any back pain. If you are taller this bag would be perfect. But if you are petite, I would recommend going to REI and testing out bags in person.

I would have rated this two stars, but customer service was great and they are refunding my money.

I bought this bag to replace the Ameribag I had purchased the year before. The Ameribag is advertised as being ergonomic, but I found that, being designed to be worn on one shoulder, it made my opposite shoulder rise to compensate for the weight of the bag. Over time, it caused me to walk crookedly, creating problems for my back. I decided to try the Baggalini Messenger Bagg so that I could sling it over one shoulder, but put the bulk of the bag in the front. My back pains have subsided, and I am walking much straighter now.

I had no problem with using this bag through airport security and it fits fine under the seat. It's a very roomy bag and I was able to fit three changes of clothes plus heels. Here's another trick for using this bag: put your liquids in a bag between the two compartments so when you unzip the bag to go through the x-ray machine, you can toss your liquids into a bin. No need to fish it out of the main compartment.

After dropping my laptop in Dulles Airport after getting through security, I knew there had to be a better way. This was much cheaper than the replacement CD-Rom drive that got broken.

The side pockets are easy to throw in drinks for those long, dry-air flights. The laptop section held a 15.4 Dell M4400 (the widest brick-heavy laptop out there) with ease. I love the section in the back padding that allows you to slip it right over the handles of your carry-on with having to worry about it falling off. The middle section gives you plenty of space for magazines, notepads and a some snacks. The pouch section holds my USB drive, iphone and blackberry cables, as well as perfecly holds my noise canceling head phones. The zip-thru pouch that opens up is great for putting a jacket in. So when you unzip to get through security, you throw the jacket in the bins, when it comes out "cooked" on the other side of the X-Ray you through it right back in once you zip it back up.

The greatest part is that it all fits comfortably under the seat in front of you.

The only thing I miss is that my old targus had a shoulder pouch to keep a pack of cigarettes\cell phone in.

I can make it through security, without juggling 3 bins like I use to. Now it is this backpack first, bin full of my shoes, belt and ziplock bag, all being pushed along with my carry-on. I can get through the security X-Ray and running out the other side in less than 30 seconds. Assuming I dont have that guy that has to make 4 trips through the detector cause he forget to remove his keys first, then his belt, then his watch. :)

I was searching for a sturdy backpack for school that would allow me to carry my laptop as well as schoolbooks. After reading many of the reviews of this bag, I placed my order and crossed my fingers. I shouldn't have worried; it's a great bag! Solidly built and traveler-friendly with a ton of compartments for every little thing one might need to stow away. While this backpack is slightly larger than your average backpack, it is comfortable to wear trekking cross campus. Also, another aspect of this bag that I love is that it stands upright. I know that sounds kinda crazy, but I find it annoying when your backpack flops over next to your desk and stuff kind of just falls out, or if you need to grab something quickly out of the bag you have to awkwardly curl your body around the side of your chair and then on the way up, smash your head against the desk. So yeah, lazy girl (points to self) loves the convenience of a bag that stands upright for easy grabbage. I plan to travel with this backpack when I fly home this Christmas instead of bringing a bulky tote bag on the plane.

I bought this backpack about 7 months ago. I am not really a backpack person; I prefer shoulder bags. I decided to buy this backpack when I needed to travel abroad and needed to check everything in except for my laptop. This backpack served its purpose. It has lots of spaces to help compartmentalize your items. It fits under the seat in front in the airplane and it can contain two laptops comfortably with few other clothes and items. I now use it for my frequent domestic travels and for grad school. It helps me keep organized. I no longer have to stand in front of my door for about 3 minutes searching for my keys. I have been through many camera bags, as most photographers have, searching for the "one" that will do it all. I took this on a recent landscape photo outing and packed in my Nikon D-7000, Nikkor 70-300mm lens, 18-105mm lens, 105mm lens, lens filter, tripod, extra battery, wallet and car keys! It was not overstuffed by any means, all items were easily accessible and the bag was very well balanced across my shoulder and chest. CalPak Silver Lake 31" Wheeled Duffel

We bought this in a rush for my sons trip and the handle (to pull the rolling duffle) was already sticking a bit. but we assumed it would get smoother with time. Instead it just completely locked up and he had to struggle with that all over colorado.

He LOVED the bag otherwise and I wish we I could just risk getting the same one to replace it but it is SUCH a hassle to return....

If your travels are either long in duration or you simply face a situation at the destination where you need lots of stuff, this is a bag that can handle the load.

This bag holds plenty, and on several occasions when family members were headed out to austere locations for a long time, the generous cargo bay held everything we crammed in...and we crammed in plenty.
