I was looking for something sleek and NOT utilitarian. If you are looking for something with a lot of pockets, look elsewhere. This has one large pocket with a divider for a laptop or iPad and another divider in that same area that doesn't work very well. Aside from that, there is another pocket big enough for a phone. This is perfect for meif you are looking for something else, look elsewhere. The construction is great, the weight is great, the profile is great. I wanted to NOT look like I am about to go hiking. This does that for me.

I am looking for a simple compact design bag for my 13in laptop. This bag did the job very well. I highly recommended it.

Authentic Pigment Cotton Canvas Strap Bag. 1908

Considering the price of this bag, I was a bit iffy. It seemed a bit cheap for something that would be holding my heavy textbooks and the worst thing that could happen would be for it to split while I'm walking around campus.

I've owned one for about 3months now and I'm considering getting another in a different color.

It's got an adjustable shoulder strap. It doesn't really have a padded strap like some bags, but I've never found that it dug into me like some bags do, even when I'm carrying my heaviest books.

It's a decent size. I usually just carry one book, binder, some pencils and a umbrella in it, but if I wanted to it could easily hold another book or two. I really only use the one giant bag portion but I believe it also has a smaller zipper portion perfect for wallets, mp3 players or pencils, as well as an outer pouch or two. The pain flap is magnetic buttoned closed but it stays shut.

It's durable. I haven't seen any holes or tears yet after 3 months of constant use daily. I'd feel comfortable putting my laptop in it if I wanted to.

It come in various colors. I got a brown one but there are plenty of colors to choose from, and for the price you could get two different ones for the price of a bag somewhere else.

Really I have yet to have a problem. It is exactly what I needed for college. I really am not a fan of backpacks at all. These are perfectly acceptable for guys and girls. I say buy it! I know I'm getting another one for sure!

My bag just arrived today. I bought mine in the color black. I couldn't believe the amount of space inside this bag! The soft material is very lightweight which keeps the shoulder strap from tugging on my shoulder (Unlike my old messenger bag which was a thicker sturdy material but was really heavy on the shoulder, especially when carrying contents inside). The downside of this bag being lightweight material is that it doesn't stand up on it's own when you put it down. You have to lean it against something or lay it down. But who cares. It has two zipper compartments inside, one small and the other large. Also, it has slim cellphone/cigarette pockets ON BOTH ENDS OF THE BAG. Now that's cool. Overall, I'm happy with it.

I love this bag! Get one or two! lol The strap adjust very easily and still stays in place. You can load it full and abuse it and it still looks good. I hear " Where did you get that bag?" about once a week. The inside zip pocket holds quite a bit of stuff. The two side pockets are great, It even has a key hook. Great Deal !

in some ways I love this bag, and in other ways....I quite DISlike this bag.

Why I love it: The size is nice, it fits my school books and (mostly) fits my 17" laptop along with those necessary books. The strap for holding the bag is nice and soft, it doesn't require an extra pad in order to keep it comfortable while toting it around. The magnetic buttons to keep it shut are also quite useful and very nice.

The reasons I dislike it: While carrying it I've noticed that one of the metal clasps that connects the bag and the strap has a tendency to shift, this isn't detrimental to the bag yet so it's generally only a minor annoyance to me. The bag while able to fit my 17" laptop also however leaves a slight bit exposed to air, this is only problematic while it is raining and I have to take measures to ensure my laptop isn't exposed to the water. Also this bag should NOT be washed in a washing machine, I did so since mine is black and DOES come needs cleaning, and unfortunately got many loose threads around the bag's closing flap, I've since had to trim these excess threads and simply HOPE it doesn't cause utter failure of the bags structure.

Overall, I DO like this bag, the feel is nice, but for my heavy-duty needs I probably should have purchased another. If your needs are light and you don't have a need to wash this bag in a washing machine, I would definetly recommend this bag. However if you're a student like me with a need to carry a large load, especially a rather large electronic device, I would recommend another bag for use.

Again I want to emphasize: I DO like this bag, it's comfortable and useful.

But for heavy duty use, please browse all your options (and reviews) thoroughly.

I decided to go with a roomier bag that could fit my textbooks and laptop without feeling cramped or looking overstuffed. My seven year old boy wanted something to carry his "stuff" in and his 17 year old brother has a sling that he uses so finding this item was great. It's a sling and looks just like the picture. I had to warn him that some may say it's a "purse" which did happen at church, but several other kids immediately said no it wasn't and that it was very cool. He had some really good feedback on it, but even better I was happy that he loved it no matter what anyone said. It's just the right size for him. It was great on a beach trip for him to keep track of all his special things.

This is a good backpack. It is very sturdy. I got it for my high school son because he ripped through his first backpack for the year in less than a week. We paid about the same for that backpack as we did for this JanSport backpack. He has had it now for a couple of months and his holding together just fine. When he first got the backpack he said the shoulder pads were very hard but now he says they don't bother him anymore. Maybe he has broken them in or just gotten use to them. If you are looking for a good and roomy no frills backpack for school, this one has worked out great for my son. I had a JanSport years ago when I was in college and I remember it being a good choice back then too. This Big Student Backpack is a great choice for the money.

I have ridiculously large books and a half hour walk to and from the train station each day. Unlike every other backpack I've tried, the straps of this one have yet to start ripping or fraying apart from the bag. The only feature I miss is a buckle connecting the two straps across the front of the chest, so they don't pull apart at the shoulders. However, the bag is heavy-duty and roomy, and I'm easily able to fit my laptop, Con Law book (maybe the largest book ever made), Crim Law book (2nd largest ever), and pocket dictionary. Overall, if you can get as good a price as I paid for it, I would recommend it to any student or other user...

I recently received my backpack and used it this week while commuting back and forth to work. I was very pleased and impressed with the size, number of compartments it has, and the way it holds the weight of all my personal belongings--I was surpised that there was enough room for my big purse. I carry my coffee, 36 oz bottled water, purse, iphone and its acessories, ipad and its accessories, lunch(small or big), paperwork, and umbrella in the backpack and I still have some extra space left. I take the bus to work five days a week and I used to carry my purse and a big nylon bag (and sometimes 2 bags, depending on the size of my lunch and amount of paperwork) and had problems trying to manage all the stuff I carried on the bus (with limited space) and thought about getting a backpack since I saw some people with them. I didn't know which ones were good/bad so I read reviews on this one and others. Since this backpack had many good reviews, I was encouraged to get this one and I'm glad I did. Now, I'm able to carry "one" bag, not 2 or 3, and my new backpack doesn't feel as heavy as the multiple bags I was carrying even though I'm carrying the same things. I feel more comfortable with it on my lap. I really appreciate the people who took the time to give their reviews on their backpacks before I decided to purchase mine. The "overall" rating on this item has lead me to making the right choice.

Well... this thing is really big. It has a lot of space... several pockets and the most important thing for me is that it is tough... holds heavy stuff, I can fill it with a travel pack for a weekend... (I am a lady... so I need several things to use in a travel)... I dont need it for a laptop, so I dont have any problem with that pocket being too big. the rear is padded and it wont hurt my back :)

The only negative I can see is that Brenthaven has gone away from the heavier cordura nylon and big beefy zippers. My last brenthaven bag was purchased 10 years ago and is still in use. I don't see this one lasting that long but time will tell.

I've had this backpack for a month or two now and I use it for commuting to work either by car or by bicycle. I have a pretty large Lenovo laptop in there and it fits with not much extra room in the laptop sleeve. The tablet sleeve fits my iPad with smart cover with no problems and there's still plenty of extra room in that area if I wanted. The other compartment has plenty of different types of pockets to hold pens, chargers, phones, cables, ipods, etc. I still haven't filled all of them. On the sides there is an area for a water bottle and also a zippered pocket for whatever other small things.

The backpack has reflective strips on the front straps and on the back to keep you visible at night when riding a bike, which is a nice touch. The zippers and material are all very high quality and don't seem like they will break. The handle on the top of the bag does seem smaller and weak compared to the rest of the bag, but it hasn't broken or even seemed strained even with heavy loads, so I might just be crazy. Overall, the build quality is very good, which is what I'd expect from Brenthaven.

I'm not sure how it would be for different laptops, but for mine, the top of it sticks up above the sleeve inside the bag a little bit. If something dropped onto the top of my laptop or if it fell upside down, the laptop is not protected. The sleeve is otherwise padded all around. I'm really not getting into very many dangerous circumstances with my laptop, so it's not a big deal, but if you're looking for maximum laptop protection, you may want to find another bag or put your laptop in a different sleeve before putting it in here.

This bag holds my 15.6" Toshiba laptop and my iPad in a hard case with bluetooth keyboard with no problems. The padding is very nice but not overwhelming. It has a nylon strap that fits over the laptop and iPad to hold both or either one in place while in the bag. The side pouch holds a water bottle or energy drink safely and easily. The outside "pouch" fits several different things and has elastic straps to snug things down. It has a few smaller pockets inside that will hold an iPod or a phone. It has one pocket that has the same style nylon strap to hold down a small point and shoot camera as well. The shoulder straps are padded and comfortable and it has a sternum strap that is nice if you want to balance the weight a bit more. I use it while riding my scooter back and forth to work and everything is in place when I get to work or home. I definitely recommend this bag.

17.3-Inch Eco-Friendly Canvas Messenger Bag (Green)

I've had it a little over a week, and so far I like the bag. I agree with "Fantasy Fiend" in that the style of the bag was a nice balance between the casual nature of a backpack and the stuffy business-like feel of most laptop bags.

I have a 16" widescreen laptop, and it's a perfect fit.

The handle is a little awkward if a laptop is not in the bag, but I intend to keep a laptop in it at most times, plus I don't usually use the handle, I use the shoulder strap. I do wish the shoulder straps had swivels attached to the ends. It seems like everytime I pick it up, I'm having to twist the strap around to make sure it's straight.

I also wish it had at least one small pocket on the outside of the pack..one that you could get to without undoing the two main clasps (for gum, pens, thumb drives, etc). It has a pocket on the back of the bag, but anything you put in that pocket is right between the laptop and the padding designed to protect the bottom of the laptop..I can't really think of anything I would put in that pocket aside from folders, papers or other soft flat items that wouldn't damage the laptop.

The pen holder is kind of strange. Look at the picture. The black patch between the two main clasps is the bottom of the pen holder, so your pens are visible outside the bag, even though you can't access them without opening the clasps. Not BAD exactly, just strange.

Overall, aside from the little issues mentioned above, I do like the bag. It does what it's supposed to, I like the way it looks.

I really wanted to like this bag, but unfortunately I just can't live with it's many flaws. First, as mentioned by several other reviewers, the handle on the bag is not centered, causing the bag to hang at an unusual and uncomfortable angle when carrying it by the handle. I thought maybe the other reviewers didn't realize it's called a 'messenger' bag because it's supposed to be worn over the shoulder messenger style. What I didn't realize was that when a bag has a handle on it, sometimes you just use it because it's convenient. Like when I'm taking the bag off my shoulder to lay down, I use the handle. However, because the handle is offset, when I try to lay the bag down on it's back side, I have to swing the bag out and plop it down quickly or it tends to want to lay on it's front because of the angle it hangs at. This, by itself, is not completely unacceptable, but this coupled with the lack of padding on the back of the laptop compartment means my laptop is susceptible to damaged every time I set it down to remove the laptop.

This brings me to another major issue I have, which is that the laptop compartment is not padded on the back side. The front, sides, and bottom are padded, but the back is just a thin piece of canvas. There is a pouch for papers behind the laptop compartment, and there is a small padded area sewn onto the outside of the back of the bag, but there is no other back padding. This made the bag unusable for me. I bought a laptop bag to protect my laptop. The lack of padding on the back side of the laptop compartment was a deal-breaker the ONE thing a laptop bag should do best is protect the laptop, and this bag utterly fails at that.

Further, I also ignored the warning that the strap connector didn't swivel, which causes the strap connector to disconnect unexpectedly. I thought surely the people this happened to were just not very bright. Well, if that's true, then count me among the less intelligent because it happened to me too... almost immediately. I grabbed the bag out of my back seat on my way in to work one morning and the strap was tangled. In my efforts to untangle the strap the connector disengaged and the bag tumbled to the ground. Fortunately I 'caught' the laptop bag with my foot before it hit the pavement, which prevented any damage to my MacBook Pro. All I did was untwist the strap half a turn, and it fell to the ground. If you've ever used a messenger bag you know that a twisted strap is a very common occurrence with a reasonably designed bag, you just untwist it, but with this bag that action can destroy your laptop. That was the day I decided that I just couldn't live with such a poorly designed laptop bag and I ordered a new, hopefully better designed bag: Targus CityGear Miami Messenger Case for 17 Inch Notebooks TCG200 (Black with Grey).

I wanted to like the bag, and I wanted the other negative reviews to be rare anomalies. I'm sorry to say that they weren't and this is just a poorly designed bag which is not suitable for somebody who takes their laptop with them frequently. I can't recommend this bag for anybody... not if you value your laptop.

The offset placement of the carrying handle helps to balance the bag IF you are also lugging a laptop. Without the laptop in its slot and a few heavy textbooks in their logical place carrying by the handle is quite awkward because the bag is very out-of-balance.Unfortunately use of the shoulder strap does not alleviate the pressing against your lower body.

I am updating my review to report additional consequences of the offset handle. After 5 Months of use the bag is splitting, tearing at the stress point of the imbalance. This bag is misnamed. It is not a messenger bag it is a Laptop-only carrying bag.

I purchased this to protect my laptop and carry around my books about a month ago. I must say, even with a 15.6" notebook, there is plenty of room for all my stuff. The only thing this bag is missing is a water bottle holder, I tend to just stick it in the middle inner pocket. I prefer the shoulder strap so I never use the handle on the back but the stitching seems adequate for most uses. Not Rowsdower adequate, but it would probably serve the purposes of Bob Johnson or Blast Hardcheese, whom I put my faith in. Remember, this is a notebook bag, so I try to not put anything too heavy or large in the bag. Bowling balls and/or cinder blocks probably wouldn't work. Yes the notebook carrying part is padded, but why take an unnecessary chance? It still fits my notebook/mouse/power adapter, paper notebook, various loose papers, ipod touch, and 2 of my college text books with ease (Think giant law tomes or organic chemistry, not... well I can't think of anything because all I have taken are law or science classes... nerd alert).

The bag itself is nice quality. The canvas is not as yellow as it looks does in the picture and the spots for the velcro id holder above the black straps don't look as weird either. There are two strips of black padding on the back, towards the bottom, which actually makes a difference when I walk as the bag tends to stay against my legs more instead of bouncing around (well, stays as much as a messenger bag will). The underside of the canvas is a velour like quality; I find it ero... wait, wrong review. The underside is a fancy water resistant plastic. However, I probably would not take this out in heavy rain, unless fully loaded, as the sides where the shoulder strap clips on tend to stick out a little from under the flap. When fully loaded the sides don't flex out. I put a trashbag over it when it rains. When people ask me what I'm doing I act all offended and ask them why they don't like my bags and the cord I use in lieu of a belt.

There are a lot of pockets. On the outside there is a pocket which is against your body when you wear the shoulder strap, I tend to not use this. If anything, I would probably only put loose paper in there. The flap has a zippered mesh pocket on the underside, perfect for my power adapter and usb devices. A 7 pencil holder on the front, the black rectangle on the picture is a little slot to keep them in so you can actually bring writing devices which do not have clips. There's an open pocket on the right side about the width of an ipod touch and a little taller and deeper, I wish there was a similar pocket on the left side. A pocket the size of the black strap directly behind it (about 6" across guestimating) with a slight velcro enclosure. Another pocket the length of the bag with a slight velcro enclosure. Inside the bag are three pockets: a thin one good for one of those 5 subject notebooks plus a little extra, another pocket which can fit two large text books and a supplement, and the padded notebook section which rests against you. The notebook section has a velcro strap on the top which you can use to tighten the pocket if you don't use a 16" or 15.6" notebook. The pockets are all a good size, and I can bring pretty much anything I want and not have to dig through the bag to find it.

One of the reason I got this is because I'm decently tall (6'2") with pretty broad shoulders and a lot of other bags did not have the shoulder strap length or width (so it doesn't ride off me) I look for. I like the middle of the bag to rest against my hips... ladies? This has a very long shoulder strap which does the job nicely, with enough to room to spare for a much taller person; I only have the strap loosened slightly below half-way. I tried pretty much every bag at a couple of computer stores and this was the only one that felt right, like when you try on a pair of running shoes. The shoulder strap seems sturdy, however, make sure it is not twisted when you pick the bag up because the strap-clips will detach from the bag. This really isn't a problem with me because twisted shoulder straps really annoy me when I walk, but I lifted it up off the table one time and the shoulder straps just popped off (the bag stayed on the table so nothing was damaged). With the shoulder straps straight, I put a few heavy books in and swung the bag around violently for a while. It did not detact and seemed very solid, so I'm not really worried about a repeat.

Overall I like this bag, it doesn't really scream "COMPUTER BAG... STEAL ME" when I wear it around and lets all the cool kids know that "Yes... I have a bag. So you know... yeah." I would give this 5 out of 5 if it wasn't for the clip coming off that one time, and the sides sticking out slightly further than the flap when it isn't fully loaded.

I purchased this in anticipation of a trip to DC. First, the offset handle is completely impractical. Two handles would be a perfect solution. Otherwise, it is completely imbalanced. It was a very frustrating experience at the airport and on the Metro. The plastic clip came undone once, causing the bag to hit the floor with my laptop inside. I am returning this and have purchased sometime that will hopefully work better at Office Depot.

I have the tarmac colored 45 liter duffle, and I really love this bag. It's my go-to grab and go duffle for quick road trips or instances when I need to in short notice pack gear and head out.

The quality is excellent. The nylon is tough and the stitching is strong, you can throw it around or manhandle it without fearing quick wear or breakage. The handles located on the sides make it easy to quickly grab and manage. The back pack straps are well padded and comfortable, making it easy to walk a city with. And the inclusion of the cinch straps on the top and bottom allow you to pack it to the gills or slim it down when you don't have so much gear.

I commuted on Amtrak frequently when I first bought it, and found it the best for weekend trips out. I've packed a week's worth of clothes and taken it as a carry on for flights to conventions like SDCC and Morrisoncon. I've thrown blankets and other supplies in it and taken it to bonfires on the beach. I've wandered around cities with it. This bag holds up. I want another for a bug out bag.

I originally purchased the 95L bag and it turned out to be way too big! This one is perfect. I love the fact that there is no shoulder strap but the oversized handles essentially function as straps and it also does double duty as a backpack in a pinch. This one will clear carry on no hassle. The 95L is a crap shoot.

I was expecting this to be the size of an adult pilot suitcase. It's the size of a small child's backpack. You could not use it as a suitcase. It can hold maybe one outfit. I have never felt so disappointed buying something on Amazon....and I buy a lot of stuff!

Timbuk2 D-Lux Laptop Messenger Bag

Well, this part I already knew. The Timbuk2 bags are built to last. I shop consignment and see older models, used and often a bit beat up, still apparently fetching some sweet prices. (The Honda of messenger bags?) So I was eager to have the opportunity to check out the DLux, in person it's lightweight, it's 100% synthetic (but no chemical plastic-y smell here), and it's certainly made to withstand the travails of a rainy/snowy/hot/humid commute by bike/car/subway/whatever.

What it's *not*, is particularly compact or elegant. Having had a go with this one, I can attest to its strength and capacity -and oh boy, it will hold the tablet, the kids' mini-computers (both of them) a pair of shoes, the water bottle, the purse, my knitting, a binder...get the idea? By the time you fill it up, you're going to want that nifty memory cam adjust buckle that lets you put the bag over you cross body, then easily cinch it up under your arm for a secure fit. Maybe just an ergonomic nicety for those of us who don't use a bike or have to run for the train, but if you're the type who is constantly struggling with a swinging bag or one that wants to fall off, it's worth the learning curve to have this feature. (Yes, I was stumped. But only for about 5 minutes.)

As a smaller woman, I'm going to suggest considering what your actual needs are and purchasing the smallest model of this bag that serves those needs. I'm actually considering the XS version of this bag now, which would also double handily as an "XL" handbag. (No, I'm not the fashion bug I'll take durability over cutting-edge styling any day of the week.) But even this medium size is admittedly *huge* on a small-framed woman. I mean, I was positive I'd been sent a LARGE in error, until I did a quick measure and found it closer to 19.3" in length than the 22" that is the large. So if it's just a little netbook/minicomputer or tablet that you have to tow, it's worth noting the range of sizes for this bag. (Then again, if you do have the larger laptop, you'll at least be looking at a lightweight solution for lugging it. Empty, the bag weighs in for me at a little over 3 pounds.)

The rear zipper access to the main compartment, residing at the top part of the back of the bag, is a curious modification. (Then again, when you only shop for messenger bags during "odd" decades, you miss a lot of updates.) I'm not sure that the buckled front flap will get a lot of use for many folks considering the convenience of the zipper, but I suppose the makers wouldn't want to remove front flap functionality. The zipper is kind of an engineering marvel unto itself, all but invisible from the outside -you see the pull but the "teeth" are securely concealed. From the inside, it's the same story, thanks to careful finishing details that are evident throughout the bag.

It's too new to speak to how my particular bag will wear, but look around various Timbuk2 models here on Amazon, or do an online search on "Timbuk2", and you'll quickly see that the longevity of these bags is pretty legendary no exaggeration. My Timbuk2 DLux will be an "occasional use" item, so I fully expect to pass it on in my will.

One quibble I can't find a care label in this bag. Sure, I already expected that I could take one through the car wash and it would be fine, but some cleaning guidance would still be nice to have, so I consulted the Timbuk2 website and they told me !!! NOT TO PUT IT IN THE DRYER!!! (Seriously, guys, don't) also, this:

· Fill a bath tub or sink with warm water.

· Get just a little bit of gentle soap on your hands, just enough to make the water a little cloudy.

· Dunk and squeeze the bag repeatedly.

· Drain the tub or sink, and refill with clean water, keep dunking and squeezing till the water stays clear...

· Hang in a warm airy place to dry.

Wish I could do that with my portable electronics.

I looked at all of the competition and this bag fit the bill the best, but there are a few details which could make this bag much better. I was looking for an all-around bag that would be a bombproof commuter, yet refined enough that it's not unwieldy on a crowded metro and I don't look like a bike messenger when I walk into a law firm. I'd guess you're already familiar with the pluses so here are my gripes (maybe I'm just a cup half-empty kind of guy).

1) It's not actually all that big. I like the width (strap to strap) but it would be much more functional if were just a couple of inches deeper (top to bottom) without sacrificing any convenience. 2) the front flap is too short to cover the pockets when it's stuffed. Again, another couple inches would've made a world of difference. 3) the plethora of pockets on the front are not very functional because they don't expand, yet share the same space, being stacked on top of eachother, meaning, if you fill the middle pocket, nothing will fit behind it or in front. I end up only using one of them. That goes for the napoleon pocket too. 4) the adjustable buckle digs into my ribs pretty bad when cinched up for riding. Wish it had some sort of soft backing. 5) NO EXTERNAL POCKETS!!!! the outer zipper lets you in kind of like an external pocket but kind of cumbersome and not very functional. Seriously, this is a no-brainer and most of the competition offers them. 6) no external bottle holder. Got a drink you want to bring along? Better toss it into your bag next to your iPad... again, Timbuk2, WHY YOU NO!? 7) no compression straps. I really wish I were able to reduce the volume when not full. 7) shoulder strap is not very plush and easily slides off. I get a decent ache when fully loaded (~20 Lbs) after about 10 minutes. Going to try out the Delux strap replacement soon.

All that said, I would definitely buy this bag again. The infrastructure is extremely solid, internal rubber lining is very thick & well fitted, laptop sleeve is great and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE having a sternum strap (an important feature that seems to get glossed-over in the description and reviews) for spirited city cycling.

Being a student who bikes to school, lugging a laptop and books is normally an enormous pain. The Timbuk2 D-Lux Messenger bag has been a life changer. Wow. I should have invested in a bag like this long ago, but better late than never! Here are some of my highlights:

PROS:

* Endless compartments. When I first received the bag, I thought it was like a magician's trick bag, because pockets seemingly kept appearing out of nowhere. Great for storing ... well, everything you own!

* Ease of use. Load it up, snap it closed, hoist it around your torso, and off you go. Can't get much simpler than that!

* Adjustable shoulder strap. The strap is super unique in that it "remembers" the length setting through a clever clip device, which also allows for adjusting while wearing. Very intuitive and useful.

* Laptop access. This is one of my favorite features: when the bag is closed, the laptop is accessible through the top, via a well-placed zipper, so no need to un-clip the straps and Velcro, and dig around the bag just to get out the computer.

* Weather-proof. Laptops + water = my life is ruined. The bag repels water like a duck's feathers, which I've already tested after biking through a few rain showers.

* Separate compartment for iPad. Well, I don't own an iPad, but a great feature regardless!

* Rugged and sturdy. This bag is built to last, fo sho.

CONS:

* The bag is a bit bulky and can seem cumbersome when fully loaded, but if it wasn't this size, there wouldn't be as much storage space, so really it's a trade-off.

* Um ... can't think of another con. It's that good of a bag!

Overall, a great commuter bag for students or business folks -especially those who travel via two wheels. Timbuk2 is known for making top-of-the-line messenger bags, and the D-Lux Laptop is definitely one of their best.

The build quality and usability met my expectations for a Timbuk2 product. The point of this review is to offer some guidance on two points.

SIZE: I suggest you take some steps to clearly visualize the size of the item. I used the laptop size configurator to determine if mine would fit, and that drove me to the Large. But the Large is...well, LARGE. So, I suggest that you get a tape measure and sort of map out the dimensions in space for yourself to make sure it's not too big for you. (Note that the somewhat stiffer quality of this bag makes the size matter less than it would with an ordinary messenger.)

QUICK RELEASE "CAM": I don't know why they refer to the "cam" when they talk about the quick-adjust feature. The "cam" is the part that does the non-quick-releasing part of the adjustment -it's just like the normal adjustment cam on a Timbuk2 messenger, and it works by drawing the excess strap down into a loop beside the bag. The quick-release part is actually a normal, large quick-release BUCKLE. I think a lot of the confusion and reluctance around this feature stems from this mis-description. It's really just a BUCKLE that makes all the slack available to you; when you need to take up the slack again, you clip the BUCKLE. You more or less only ever work the cam once (or at least work it very rarely).

This is my first ever Timbuk2 bag and I luvvvv it!

I've been waiting for a messenger bag like this for a long time. I use it to commute to work, and I also use it as a camera bag. I just started getting into street photography and this bag IMO makes the perfect camera bag.

I slip in a Tenba photo insert to carry around my Nikon D3000 along with an extra lens and I'm off. The laptop entry zipper lets me access my camera and stash it back with the quickness. There's no need to take the bag off and fumble around to get the camera out. To tell you the truth I rarely unclip the flap and open it, I can access the interior organizer and the front pockets just as easily from the zipper. If you have more expensive gear than me you should consider this bag, because no one wants to haul a bag around screaming slr and expensive lenses inside-come mug me. Plus, this bag will do a better job at keeping the contents safer from the rain, although I haven't had chance to test this yet.

The napolean pocket is great for fast access to my work ID, a buss pass and any other slim/small items you need quick access to.

Some have complained about a lack of interior organization options I don't have a problem at all. The 3 front zippered pockets are great for change and business cards, the interior organizer fits my needs although I wish the pouch with the flap was longer to fit smartphone/ipod.. and the microfiber pocket was too little for my liking as well.

I was surprised to find out the bag doesn't have a problem standing up by itself, which was a welcome benefit but wasn't a concern when I bought the bag. I know others wish it could freestand better, but I haven't had an issue with that yet.

This is the bag I've been holding out for. I wanted a bag that had waterproof materials(not water resistant), zipper access to the main compartment, decent interior organization, and good laptop sleeve, and a grab handle. This met my criteria.

I've only had the bag for a month. I'll update this with anything of note as time passes.

I wish the pad strap was a little more comfortable, although it takes to my should better since it has kinda broken in due to the Trufit cam buckle. However the pad tends to slide up and down the strap too easily for my taste. I'm going to look into a better strap pad but this is a very minor issue.

I also would be nice if there was some sort of mesh pocket on the side for a water bottle-but again this doesn't take away from the bag at all.

I also wish the there was more variety to colors and appearance. I didn't want a straight up black bag, and wasn't thrilled with the options. I settled on the gunmetal with the red, and it's not too bad.

Condor Medium Assault Pack (Acu)

I bought this backpack about 9 months ago. I have used it almost daily ever since. I loved this bag. I added few MOLLE pouches to it, and it held everything I wanted in a customizable, organized way. Perfect.

HOWEVER...

The zippers are of poor quality. They started to separate so often that it became impossible to keep the bag closed for longer than 5 min with even a slight amount of weight in it. I contacted Condor customer service about the issue, and they never responded.

It's funny. I have a few original WWII German rucksacks that saw a world war, and then 60+ years, and they are still holding up fine. They don't make things like the use to.

Love it, love it and still loving it....I might buy more just for Christmas or Birthday presents. Thank you!

Ok folks...To start I must say that this bag is of the highest build quality. It is put together VERY well...

I ordered it hoping to us it to carry all my new camera equipment. This includes a D300, 12-24, 18-200, 70-300, 50 1.4, 10.5 fisheye, and a medium tripod. Ok, a good amount of gear I admit, but certainly no more than is suggested could fit in it's description...and it did. But just barely and certainly with no room left for anything else.

And this sucker is big...Don't let the "medium" moniker mislead you. Most prominently it is thick and fully loaded with gear, its even thicker. But justifiably so, It's got a lot going on. Lot's of space, roller bag AND backpack with tripod holder.

So...great bag, exceptional build quality, holds a decent amount of gear but not enough accessory room for my needs. Although it did fit all my camera gear, there was very little additional room for all the other miscellaneous do-dads that go along with a camera setup. Manuals, filters, portable hard drives, cleaning gear, cables, batteries, chargers, etc...etc...

This bag will definitely do a good job of carrying and protecting your delicate camera setup...just don't plan on taking it ALL with you. You WILL have to pick and choose what you want to have with you...

All in all a thumbs up...

Another reviewer here called upon his disdain for bags to show how nice this bag is. I will do the opposite. I love bags. The more utilitarian, the better. The intent of this bag is to fit and protect a laptop, a ton of camera gear while still being storable in the overhead bin of a commercial aircraft. Does it meet these goals? Yes, but it is not perfect.

Pros:

Room for lots of gear. I can carry both dSLR bodies and the rest of my gear easily. The bag will accommodate my Canon T1i with a battery pack installed without a problem. There's room for a lot of lenses. Since I am still developing my collection of lenses, I can fit my 3 (70-300mm, 18-200mm and 18-55mm) and have room for several others.

Superb protection of gear. The padding is sturdy and strategically placed. You can move around the protective sections, but not at the expense of sturdiness. I say this because some of the bags I have seen will allow you to move the padding, but the fabric separates from the padding itself. This causes sagging and things move around a lot in the bag. This bag by Tenba avoids this problem.

Adaptable. I can use the wheels with the straps all stowed/hidden. The hidden straps don't get in the way when storing at the house or in the plane. Then, fairly easily, I can unzip one zipper, connect two D-rings and close one piece of double-sided Velcro to make the bag a backpack. Pretty easy. And, there is a way to get into the side of the bag to get gear. (More on this later)

Waterproof. The bag is virtually rain-proof even before you put on the included rain cover. Some people have complained about the zippers being stiff. This is a feature, not a defect. The zippers are waterproof so you can hike or travel and not worry about your gear getting wet. Then, you can take out the cover, and your bag becomes completely waterproof.

Tripod holder. Able to adapt to any size tripod. Very nice.

Accessories included. An iPod/phone pocket and media wallet are both included. These are made to snap onto the belt.

Straps and wheels. Straps are comfortable and the waist belt is substantial enough to take the weight off the shoulders. The waist belt is not as substantial as a Kielty hiking bag, but they are nice and effective. The wheels are not cheap.

Laptop compartment Fit my laptops (both my 10 inch and my 17 inch laptop, but not at the same time, of course).

Cons

Size The bag is bigger than the medium moniker suggests. The bag will not fit in commuter plane overhead bins, but it will fit in larger aircraft bins.

Weight The bag is heavy. Put your gear in and it's heavier. :)

Pockets The pocket system is nice, but not as nice as it could be. There are three internal pockets on the inside of the main flap. Two are translucent and one is opaque. There are two larger pockets on either side of the outside of the bag. There is one large outside pocket that doubles as a tripod holding system. These pockets are too generic. I like to have cubby holes for everything. These are just large storage spaces. (personal preference, not a defect)

No real quick access. The zippers are slow to open due to their design to protect (a very nice feature, IMO). The side pockets have access panels into the main compartment, but I cannot fit my camera through the hole easily.

The outer rain cover uses snaps rather than a better fastener, which makes for a frustrating time keeping the cover on. The snaps come undone way too easily and allow for water to breech the outer rain cover.

A great bag, but could benefit from a few improvements. This is highly recommended. I did a lot of searching and the only other bags I really liked were the Lowepro series. But, this bag had all the items I needed. Look around and compare, but don't pass up comparing the line of Tenba bags for your camera gear needs.

I love my camera and all of my lenses, I hate having to carry them around. That said, this is one of the best solutions I've found. The wheels are convenient. It's fairly large, I can fit 2 bodies (Canon 5DII, 30D), 3 L-series 2.8 lenses (16-35/24-70/70-200IS), a fisheye, 50mm, 2 flashes and quite a few other accessories, including my laptop. It's got so many pockets I even forgot where I put my memory cards on my last shoot. Then I remembered it comes with a CF card case. Sweet.

There are a few drawbacks. Being a backpack with wheels, the wheel track is very narrow causing the bag to occasionally barrelroll as your roll it-you just have to be careful. The outside of the bag is not as padded as I'd hoped either. The best place for the camera is on the the bottom of the bag, but that makes me nervous with all the weight on it.

Otherwise, the design, features and build qualities are top notch. No issues with this. I can't wait to travel with it. At $176 it was an excellent value.

I searched high & low to find a backpack with wheels that I could use as a carry-on bag on small commuter planes. I need to fit some camera gear (Nikon D3S with attached 70-200mm lens, plus a couple other small lenses, speedlights, and odds-n-ends) and a 15" lapop too. It seemed every bag with wheels was gigantic except this one. The video made it look pretty small... I figured it wouldn't fit in the tiny overhead bins but surely since I wouldn't be putting THAT much in it (not taking the laptop on this next trip), it could squish down under the seat in front of me. I measured out the dimensions stated online and it looked like it would work. But as soon as I saw the giant box at my door I knew it was going to be a problem...

First of all, it's a GREAT bag, very well made, and if I could afford to buy 2 bags now, one for commuter travel, and one for say driving jobs (or flying on bigger planes with more overhead space) I would keep this in a heartbeat. Extremely well-made and feels super-durable.

But the durable-ness works against you if you were hoping to "squish" it a little because there is a firm plastic (rubber?) plate in the bottom that gives it support and it won't move. There's nothing you can remove to make it any thinner, either, as the backpack straps, laptop compartment and handle/wheels are all just built in (again, durable, but....). If these maybe zippered off or something it might work for this kind of travel.

I remembered I had an old laptop bag that barely fit under the seats of the commuter planes, so I dug it out and measured it and sure enough, it's only 8" deep (8" x 13" x 16"). I figure loaded with a laptop and all the stuff I used to carry, it might have been 9" deep but that's probably the max height under a seat of a commuter plane so anything deeper/higher than this you would be hard-pressed to fit. Wish I'd remembered this before I ordered the Tenba.

So I'm switching it for a Kata 3N1 30 (says one side is only 7.5" so it SHOULD fit) and buying the Insertrolly separate since I definitely want wheels. My old Kata bag is fine, just too small for this camera/lens setup I now have... plus I figure I can take off the trolley if I need to save space (and it seems nice to just have an extra luggage trolley).

I really wish one of these many bag companies would just address this issue of commuter-plane travel. NO photographer wants to gate-check their gear, and there's such small space for carry-on bags. But camera gear is heavy, as are the laptops we like to take, so the wheels would be a real back-saver for the airport. I've seen messenger-style ones that come close to fitting the bill but if you've already got your hands full with other stuff a backpack style would be easiest to get down the tiny plane aisles. Plus who wants to trek around a city or a jungle with a messenger bag? PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE THIS BAG! :)

All in all, I love the bag. My gear is safe & secure, and I can fit SO MUCH stuff in there. Therein lies the problem it's too heavy. Way too heavy, even without my stuff in there I can tell you as a 5' tall woman, I will NEVER be able to wear this thing as a backpack. So I cut off the straps that were a big waste of space, and have a great rolling gear bag. By the time I realized I would never be able to wear it as a backpack, I'd already been using it too long so my error. Next time, lighter bag!

I can't give it a bad rating it's not the bag's fault I find it heavy. It's well made, lots of great details/designs. It's a great bag. If you're Superman.

I'll admit that I expected it to be small, but it is a little smaller than I expected it to be. It is still a nice bag though, it won't let me carry too much at a time which I kind of need since I can't really care much weight. I love the design, in the picture it looks too splotchy and kind of disorienting, it is in fact softer and not so intense that it will give me a headache like I feared it might. The fabric feels sturdy, now I just need to break this baby in.

Anything tactical is all the rage right now tactical backpacks, tactical knives, tactical clothing, etc, etc, etc. The SnugPak Endurance 40 ("the 40") walks the line between both the world of the practical and the tactical. This is SnugPak trying to squeeze into an already crowded market of tactical bacpacks.

First, the practical to start. A 40 litre or 2,440 cubic inch (1 L = 60 ci) pack gets into the range of handeling about what 80% of cunsumers will need in terms of space unless you are out for extended trips of 5 days or more then you need to think about 5000+ ci bags. This group of "tactical" packs are refered to as daypacks, but you can fill them for a several day outdoor field trip. For example of the space offered inside the 40 for a three-day excersion I can fit my sleeping bag in a compression sack, my 3-man backpack dome tent, my compressed outdoor research bivy sack (when needed), the 100 oz CamelBak bladder full of water, lots-of-snacks, several pair of socks, two change of clothes, GPS, maps, compass, 6 MRE bags, a Katadyne Hiker Pro water filter, mess kit, small lantern and still have extra room for trip specific equipment. So, a 2,440 ci bag is plenty big enough for most 3-4 day trips. You can do more of course but you best be a minimilist in what else you bring. Yet the best part is the pack does not have a massive profile so that means you can use it as an Every Day Carry (EDC) bag for work, school or whatever and not look as if you have on a near empty mountain rucksack.

The pack is made of 500 Denier (500D) nylon which is strong enough to withstand and last multiple trips into the field. The material is softer and more pliable than the 1000D Maxpedition packs which are stiff and can be uncomfortable no matter how long you own them. The shoulder straps are comfy enough, but the belt is a bit high on me as I have a long torso backpack fits are best done based on torso size as opposed to height. It will rip and it can be cut by unprotected knives in the pack, but absent malice towards the 40 it will ast you a long, long time. The 40 is NOT BOMBPROOF like a Maxpedition, but it is a Hell of a lot more comfortable then the Max or the 5.11 packs.

The pack has NO suspension system, NO internal frame and of course NO external frame. This of course reduces cost to the 40 greatly, but you could haul larger weight for longer hikes if it had any suspension of an internal frame to it. Kelty does a good job at a good price with their internal frames and Mystery Ranch leads the way when it comes to suspension and weigh distribution well this pack aint those and the 40 is NOT as comfortable to haul weigh in as are thiose two brands. YOU WILL BE LIMITIED IN HOW MUCH WEIGH YOU CAN CARRY. That being said and depending upon useage, you will find that 80-90% of consumers will find this pack large enough and comfortable enough for most all of their needs on the trails and off.

Finally along the lines of the practical the water bladder sleeve is nice, color choices fall into the "tacticool" colors as opposed to standard pack colors which stand-out against the backgrounds. But the price is the MOST practical thing here. That means big enough, built well enough and cheap enough. Pack also houses a waterproof cover in a zipper compartment in the bottom of the bag.

Now the tactical. Yeah, the 40 is MOLLE (MOdular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment)compatable. The 40 has PALS, lots of them. Over 150 PALS (Pouch Attachment Ladder System )attachment points. This means the 40 is expandable. You can add extra pouches to the pack if you wish. Considering the 40 does NOT have the typical tactical bag/pack administration compartment it seems logical that most consumers of tactical equipment who purchase the 40 would want to add that feature to the pack. 8 rows of PALS on both sides and 9 rows of PALS on the back of the pack allow for great expansion of use. The only pouch on the pack has NO internal webbing. The 40 also has a 3.75" L X 2" W velcro set-up for your morale patch. The 40 includes two rows of velcro on the back between rows of PALS for name tapes and/or mini patches.

The Pros:

Final Analysis:

All-in-all the SnugPak Endurance 40 is a good bargain made in China or not. It is a very practical 3-4 day backpack or as a large EDC. The lack of an internal frame (for a good internal fram example see the CamelBak Trizip by Mystery Ranch) is the worst thing about the pack. Yet, the pack is worth the money no doubt.

I suggest before you buy to go to your local campaing equipment store, e.g. Cabella's, REI, Bass Pro Shop, etc, and look at the packs. See the size difference in a 1,800 ci vs 2,300 ci vs 4,000 ci. Then try on an internal frame pack and some with no frame at all. Get an idea of what works for you. At REI they will measure your torso for a proper fit (most adult males are 16" 19"). The 40 IMHO is best suited for a 15"-17" torso so its on the lower end, but can fit comfortably for up to 19" but again, its about the weight you are carrying and how far.

I have had mine for over 16 months thats more than 90-days in the field and several months in the car, the truck, and the bhoys kickin' the crap out of it playing Ranger. It has held up better than expected. Clean it up and I dare you to tell me its more than a week old!

Compare the prices to other 3-4 day packs. Pick a pack based upon what you want to do with it. Be PRACTICAL in what you choose. I just think the 40 is a great all-around pack for the field or as an EDC. Buy what you need it to do, so shop around.

Remember you can get more days out of it if you pack less. The longest I have used continually is 6-days and that was with no tent, no bivy in summer with only sleeping bag and a tarp. 5-days longest in winter (I took less clothes and went for the smelly factor).

This pack is AWESOME! I bought this pack for bush-craft/ self reliance. It is way better then i thought, and well worth the money. I found that it has two large pockets on left and right side. one pocket on the in inside of the lid, one large pocket one on the out side of lid, and a large pouch for a hydration system inside! The pack and all the MOLLE straps makes it seam option-less! oh yeah.. and the waterproof cover on the bottom of pack and tie downs for a bed roll! i cant wait to go get it dirty!

nice pack, It's a great design. It was very disappointing to find out that it was made in china, I would have never bought it, but so far its holding up. I rec-amend buying it from the U.K. not the U.S. it made in china if you get it from the U.S.

Eastsport Sling Backpack

The backpack is good for now. I only carry it once or twice a week, which I can not really speak about the durablity. I can say it appears to be made from good quality material. I would like if it was a little bigger inside. Wish it had one more small pocket.

I was happy with this product. I purchased it for my daughter who is in 8th grade. It fits most of her books nicely, and the zippers are sturdy. The design and colors are just "cool" enough for an 8th grader without being too flashy or too boring. It's what we expected when we ordered it.

Great bag. It has 2 main compartments, one in the front and one in the back. The compartment in the front has a couple of smaller pockets to put stuff inside, pretty simple layout. The straps are really comfortable and will never eat into your shoulders regardless of the content weight. I also had my bag on during slight rain with my DSLR inside. I was worried initially but when I found shelter, my camera and insides were still totally dry.

There was an accidental leakage of water from my bottle on another occasion as well, the insides dried up really fast and well. Great multi-purpose, or rather all-purpose bag for most weather conditions and comfort.

Just a slight edit for those interested in its durability. I've brought this bag out under heavy periods of rain with a DSLR (Canon 50D) and my laptop inside my bag. I was worried that the stuff inside would get wet so I kind of ran through the rain. The straps were sturdy and allowed me to move pretty fast with minimal obstruction.

Upon reaching my destination (which was sheltered) I unzipped the bag and found everything inside still toasty and dry. Great bag for any casual traveller.
