SwissGear SA1923 ScanSmart Backpack - Black

I bought this backpack for school. After an exhaustive search online, in local stores and across campus, I can definitively say that this is hands down the best laptop backpack you can buy!

Pros:

1. Tons of space and usable compartments:

1 padded laptop compartment

1 thin compartment that can be used for papers and folders

1 main compartment that contains vertical dividers to keep things organized, a smaller interior mesh pocket, and an ipod/cell phone pouch that leads to a slit in the top of the backpack for a headphone cord

1 decent sized pocket on each side (I use 1 for my laptop charger and accessories)

2 stretchy water bottle pockets big enough for the big 1 liter bottles (good for umbrella too)

1 small pocket on the top front

1 pocket on the bottom front that contains a bunch of small organizer pockets found in every backpack that nobody ever uses

2. Comfort: padded, shock absorbing arm pads, padded back, and a comfortable handle on top.

3. Appearance: In my opinion, this is one of the best looking backpacks out there, but I can't argue with taste so if you have one of those ugly backpacks, that's fine with me.

4. Price: Phenomenal deal! ($50 when I purchased it) Would have gladly spent more (don't tell amazon)

Cons: (there really are none... I'm nitpicking here)

1. The opening for the laptop is on the side (not the top) which makes it a little awkward to get in and out. Not a big deal though.

2. I would have liked a little more padding underneath the laptop. The amount of padding is pretty similar to most other laptop cases though. You just need to be careful about setting it down to hard.

3. The size was perfect for my 15.6 widescreen. I haven't tried a 17", but I'm guessing it would be too big (if you could get it to fit inside, it would be VERY tight)

I wanted to replace my husband's Targus shoulder laptop bag because it was just way too heavy (even when empty). I decided to get this backpack for his 17" Macbook Pro. The description says it holds up to 15", but I felt confident that it would fit his 17" because I tried stuffing his laptop in my 15" SwissGear backpack and it fit perfectly. Sure enough, this bag also fits the 17". I also wanted to mention that I was looking at other SwissGear laptop bags in the $50 range at Target and there's a huge difference in material and quality compared to this one. Although Amazon sells this for $50 (at least when I got it), I feel that it's worth more a lot more. But I'm not complaining about the price ;)

I bought this item so I could reduce the wear and tear on my back and neck. The first day I used it, I pulled the adjustment piece on the strap and without much effort the piece of hardware came off. Want to make a fashion statement? Looking for something to coordinate with this year's "in" color? Going to fish for compliments while you strut down the sidewalk? This is not your backpack. I have had this thing since 2010 and it's been stowed in the car, in numerous overhead bins, under the seat, in the closet. All the while it has protected my laptop and the rest of the contents well. I have zero complaints about this backpack and I would absolutely buy it again. The separate pocket for a laptop has been a great feature during airport security screens. Also the size and shape of the numerous pockets has been a big help. I've even found use for the carabiner. The handle on top is great, too. I never fumble for it and the grip is extremely secure. For me it's just the right size to pull out from under the seat in front on a plane, tuck it behind my knees, and stretch out a little after takeoff. After 6 plane trips, a bunch of car rides, and just general tossing around it shows zero wear. Buy it.

I LOVE this bag. I am buying a second one for when I wear this one out! It holds it all. Currently mine is holding, a SLR Camera, 2 lenses, 2 notebooks 1 full size, a Kindle (thank you Amazon), 2 pairs of sunglasses, my make up, my wallet and still has planty of room for a cat (which put herself in there). It's comfortable to carry and wear for long walks, bike rides etc. And will do all of this without being completely in the way! It hugs your body and is only as big as you make it and even full fits by your feet without getting in the way. Plus, and this is a big bonus, the price is right! Under $30. Urban Outfitters and other places had a similar bag, for almost $200. Ridiculous!

The bag is very stylish and perfect for the minimalist. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there are three internal pockets for sorting gear. Two medium sized pockets, and one large one. The D-rings on the outside are perfect for strapping extra gear. The strap on the top of the bag is perfect for carrying the bag when its not on your shoulders. The disadvantages of this bag are the cumbersome buckles that take a while to open/close. My biggest issue with this bag is that there is no internal structure or frame. If the bag is empty, its very limp.

I ordered this rucksack after previewing at least ten others. I was really worried about buying one that was strong enough to hold books, a computer, extra shoes, or anything else I need. It arrived on time and I fell in love with the weathered and official look of it. It's large enough to hold textbooks, gym clothes (including shoes), a computer and anything else you might want to carry around. It is also strong which is a big concern if you want to use it everyday. This holds up and looks awesome. A great buy.

It does exactly what a backpack is meant to do. It holds my stuff, and seems pretty sturdy. As other reviewers have mentioned, though, it's a little small -but it's large enough to fit the books and such I need. It's a good backpack -but if you're trying to fit something larger than a standard size binder, or a lot of little things, you should look for something bigger.

The pack LOOKs well made and very light weight as expected. But during my first 10 hour hike, the band on the right shoulder strap that held the water pack nozzle broke at the seam. There wasn't enough material contact when they sew the seam. I'm likely to fix that minor issue myself, look more like a defect rather than the overall quality of the pack. Will update later...

Everything its fine and the backpack its awesome, just the only detail is that they sell this item as a laptop backpack but it doesn't protect the entire computer.

This is advertised as a Laptop Backpack, but when it arrived there was no padding in the backpack for a laptop. The section for the laptop does not extend all the way up. Consider this if you want an small backpack, but if you get this for your laptop do not expect any significant protection.

SugarBooger Kiddie Play Back Pack

I bought this for my 2 1/2 year old son. It fits him well, it's just the right size. It's also super cute!!! Though I agree with other reviewers that the straps are sewn on too far apart from each other at the top. This makes it easy to slip off. Right now he walks with his shoulders pulled forward, but I'm sure he'll adjust to it with use. If the straps were closer together at the top of the bag allowing for a more comfortable fit I'd rate it 5 stars. I may have to get a mitten clip like one person said they did.

The large velco flap is easy for him to open and close. It's lightly padded all around, which I'm sure allows for more comfort, so he's not feeling every toy or book poking through. The carry handle on top is helpful when he's carrying it from here to there to stuff things inside. He immediately filled the bag with Wheat Thins, which I immediately dumped out and had to clean the bag. He then filled it with a random assortment of toys. He just wants to fill it up and wear it!

I got it as a toy more than anything, and for him to take a few things with him and spare pants/undies when we go out, so I don't have to carry his stuff. It's not a school bag, however, so don't be bummed if you can't fit a folder and books in it.

UPDATE: My son loves his backpack so much he often sleeps with it. One night he wet the bed and got a LOT on the back pack. I ran it through the washer on cold in the "hand wash" setting and hung it up to dry. It came out in very good shape, though looking a little worn. The edges of the flap crunched up a tiny bit. I think it looks great considering it went through the wash, and is actually a bit softer now. I'm happy to know I can wash it and it's ok!

UPDATE 12/28/11 Just bought another one for my second son. The robot style, since he loves "bo-bots." Can't wait to give it to him for his second birthday! I will be back for a third when my daughter turns two in 16 months. They better still be available!

UPDATE 4/17/13: Just bought a third for my daughter! I love these, and the kids do too! The original, now 2 1/2 years old, is doing very well. And the only thing that really pooped it out was a couple of runs in the washing machine. I have been able to avoid having to wash the robot one and it's still nearly like new! We will be giving our daughter her's on her 2nd birthday in two days and she's going to be so excited to be just like her brothers!

My only complaint would be the limited girl styles. I mean, there are a lot, but they are all just so...well, girly!! I really wanted the Dia de los Muertos backpack, but my husband said that was me trying too hard (still, I like it!) We settled for one with owls and hearts and not too much pink. Still cute, but they need tomboy options. :)

I bought this for my 2 1/2 year old daughter, despite an earlier review about the straps being too wide. This is true, the straps are too wide and fall off my daughter's shoulders if it is not positioned exactly right. But I have rectified the issue by using a mitten clip (it's a mini suspender) to pull the straps together across her front. The sizing is wonderful, the pattern is cute, and it's not advertising for anyone (Disney etc.). I am very pleased with it, and would give it a 5 star if the straps were a little closer together, or if it came with a clip that you could just put across their chest to fix it. Mitten clips are easy to find and very inexpensive (a couple of $$). If you're thinking about buying it, I'd go for it. It's well worth it.

UPDATE (July 2011): My daughter is now 3yr3mo and the straps fit fine. They are too big on my 2 yr old so will use the mitten clips until the straps don't fall off her shoulders.

I purchased this a year ago for my 2.5 year old daughter, and we all love it. It's easy for her to open/close and just the right size to hold her coloring books/toys. We use this primarily as a "busy bag" when we go to restaurants, church, etc., but I plan to use it for preschool as well; it's big enough to hold what she needs, but not too big for her to carry -just right for little bodies! I did a LOT of research before deciding on this particular backpack for my son. We've been using it for almost a year now and have absolutely loved it. We also have a Sugarbooger lunch bag to match and a splat mat in another Sugarbooger pattern (Outerspace) and love them both as well. The backpack is just the right size for taking to mother's day out and short nursery stays, or on trips in the car. We pretty much take it everywhere with us; for the amount we've used it already, the price was extremely reasonable. I fit several diapers (sz 5), a travel package of wipes, an insulated sippy cup, a package of diaper disposal bags, at least one toy, some crayons, and usually a fruit pouch and/or fruit snacks in it at one time, so it's pretty roomy. The nice thing is that the flap with the velcro is the only fastener so you don't have to worry about overstuffing it and breaking a zipper or anything. There is a zipper pocket inside, but I've never actually used it. My son is almost two and still a bit young to carry it on his back, but the top handle makes it just as easy for me to carry around. I love that the style, size and pattern are such that my son will probably be carrying this around until he goes to kindergarten and maybe even longer. Just a note: I had this monogrammed with his name pretty large on the flap in brown and it looks adorable. There was an ID sleeve on the inside of the pouch that the monogrammer removed in order to monogram it, but that was no big deal and didn't cost extra. I've also washed this in my washing machine and just hung it up to dry and it faired just fine. The inside can be easily wiped out, but the outside is a durable fabric (almost like a canvas) that isn't as easily wiped down, but came out of the washer perfectly clean. I get lots of compliments on my Sugarbooger products because they're so cute and unique!

I waffled a bit over buying this backpack, having read about the issue of size from other reviewers, and having measured it out on paper beforehand and realizing that it is, in fact, exactly the size of a piece of notebook paper and thus, would likely not be able to hold an actual notebook-sized object.

The deciding factor was the pattern. Skip Hop's Owl Pack is adorable -and a little larger -but my little girl only likes owls, while she LOVES monsters. And no doubt, this monster pattern is absolutely adorable. My daughter lit up when the package arrived today, and promptly put her backpack on. She is three and the pack looks so sweet and perfect on her. Even sweeter was the fact that she wore the pack ALL DAY long, while playing in the sandbox, filled with her Playmobil dinos for a trip to the grocery store where she insisted on walking and showing off the whole time (which ellicited many an admiring stare from onlookers, much to her pleasure). So, all in all, I've no doubt this will be a well-loved, well-used little item.

But we had another motive. We were hoping this would be a pack that she could wear to 3K next year, in spite of the size. And I'm not sure it's ideal for that. It *will* actually hold a notebook of standard size or a full-size coloring book, a few of them actually, but they don't go in easily enough for my daughter to pack them up herself I don't believe, and the flap is somewhat resistant to velcroing closed when this sort of large object is placed inside. I can't help but wonder why the dimensions couldn't have been ever-so-slightly larger, or even if this pack were offered in a closer-to-standard backpack size for older kids? It's darn-near impossible to find a backpack that doesn't have PVC or some other nasty material, and that has kid-appeal too. I love the thick, cotton canvas of this. It's absolutely ideal -and I think it'll survive washing too, though I may do it on delicate out of an abundance of caution. We'll soon find out as it does have a slightly chemical odor inside, perhaps from the finishing process, and I will probably wash it in the next few days.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased with this little pack, and even if it doesn't pan out as a 3K backpack, I think it will see plenty of use as a convenient tote for toys, small books, and art supplies for outings. Or just, apparently, as a fun accessory to wear around everywhere.

Ensign Peak Dual Pocket Drawstring Backpack

This is a simple bag that does the job.

It is not a full out gym bag, but you can get shoes and a change of clothes in there. I like that it is breathable so if something is damp I do not need to get worried if I do not empty it right away.

The main draw back is that the water bottle pocket does not accommodate anything bigger than a standard 20 oz. bottle. My Sigg bottle and insulated bottle for my bike don't fit and it would be nice if the other outside pocket had a closure of some sort but it is still a great bag for stowing things on the quick.

I used this bag for Comic-Con to match my outfit, and it held up well, though I did have to retie the knots for the straps immediately because one came undone before I even used it. It did well being fairly full and put under a lot of strain over the course of the four days, and my water bottle was definitely secure within its pocket. I'm sure it won't last forever, but it did its job and I'm happy with it.

Pacsafe Luggage Venturesafe 20L Adventure Day Pack

I used this pack for a 10-day trip to Germany. I felt that my personal items were very secure. The fabric is supposed to be slash proof. I assume it is , but I can't say for sure, as no one tried to slash my bag (thankfully!) This pack has 2 compartments: the main compartment and a front pocket. Both compartments zip up to close. When closed, the zipper pulls (which are some type of metal wire) can be clipped to the bag. This would make it VERY difficult for someone to unzip your bag without you knowing. Also, when closed, the zippers are hidden (under fabric or mesh), so presumably a would-be-thief wouldn't see them right away. After you zip/close the main compartment, there are 2 straps that can be closed over the zipper on each side, so even if a thief began to unzip this bag, the straps would stop the zipper's progress. There is also a chest strap that you can close so no one can pull this pack off of your body. There are 2 outside mesh pockets on each side of the pack for water bottles, etc. This was very convenient. The shoulder straps and chest strap can be adjusted.

The main thing I did not like about this bag is that there are no additional inside compartments. It would be nice to have at least one or two separate pockets inside the main body of this bag. Most "normal" or "regular" backpacks have this. Without one, everything is jumbled together inside the bag (wallet, camera, hair brush, umbrella, maps, travel books, flyers, passports, chapstick, sunscreen, first-aide kit, etc.) This makes it unnecessarily difficult to find things. Another negative is that if you want to "clip" the main compartment zipper for safety, it can only be done at the bottom of one side of the pack. It would be a nice added feature to be able to clip the zipper pulls at the top center of the bag and at the other side, as well.

This back pack was smaller than I had thought (It is smaller than the average school backpack) but it is a good travel size for travel.

Overall, I am happy with my purchase. I would have liked some additional internal pockets, but it was OK as it is. This back pack was lightweight. The black color is nondescript. I recommend this bag, although there might be a better model available.

I ordered and wasn't quite pleased with the 20L. It was just not right. A bit too small, no gadget pockets, flimsy webbing for bottles on the sides.

I returned the 20L and got the 25L. The 25L is physically not much bigger but has just the right amount of room for a day adventure. You will not leave much behind with the 25L compared to the 20L.

The 20L is Ok if your going on a day picnic for two. Barely. Get the 25L. Trust me.

I have owned 2 previous day packs and I think this one is a good size and solid construction for a day trip. It has padding in the back for comfort and laptop/iPod cushioning, but no interior pockets or slots in which to slip one of these devices, nor for small electronics like an MP3 or cell phone. Instead, I used a couple of ziplock bags as interior "pockets" for small items. Side slots were sturdy and held a large water bottle, large glasses case, umbrella, etc. Exterior front zipper pocket was large enough for a couple of zipper bags, cell phone, small notepad, document case, etc. The straps unhook at the bottom to allow you to attach the pack to a luggage rack on a train. When we were forced to check the pack at museums or train stations, we put the valuables we couldn't carry in this day pack, and attached a luggage lock, in hopes no one would have the energy to bother with it. I did feel like the several security features added a bit more peace of mind than an average backpack, but no pack will discourage a determined pickpocket for long, so remain on your guard. Also, due to the cushioning on the back, you will NOT be able to fold this pack under your arm like a purse, (in order to avoid checking it at museums that require you do so). However, my friend was carrying one you COULD fold, and the guards didn't seem to fall for that trick anyhow...

I'm going to the olympics and I'm concerned about pick pockets and thieves. This back pack was exactly what I was looking for! This bag is the smaller version and doesn't have the main storage separated into smaller sections, so if you want something to separate thing, go with the larger bag.

Update:

I came back from the olympics and a tour of Paris. There were 3 occasions in which my pack was notably tampered with when walking through crowded areas. The zipper lock prevented the bag from being opened and items from being stolen. With this bag I felt pretty comfortable walking around an not having items stolen. My friend that was traveling with was not as lucky, the bag that he had was opened when we passed through a crowded area in Paris.

I bought this pack for a trip to Quito, Ecuador, which has a high theft & pickpocketing rate. Had no problems. Now I use it regularly as a carry-all bag at home in the US. It has held up well. It's quite comfortable but would be more so if there were a waist strap--even just a small one (especially when riding my bicycle, this pack slides around a lot). It's not very big but it is sufficient for most uses.

Kelty Warbler Lumbar Pack

I call this my Tactical Utility Hip Pouch (TUHP) and it works great for when I'm traveling for work (network field technician). I can keep a few extra things on me without having to haul around a purse or toolbag. Two pouches, with a small one in front of the bigger pouch.

The one problem I've had with this, is the adjustment strap slips out if I'm doing a lot of climbing or walking. But other then that, it is a very handy product.

I did quite a bit of research to find the perfect lumbar pack to use when cycling, and ended up choosing the Warbler. I use it to carry my iPhone, IDs, snacks, etc when I go riding. My saddle bag is too small to fit everything, and not as handy as a lumbar pack.

Pros:

Looks very nice (simple and stylish) I got the Charcoal and love the color too.

Has the perfect size for those who don't want to carry too much stuff, and the design is such that it stays close to your body rather than bulging out. (e.g. it's not noticeable under a loose sweater)

The front side is padded, making the outer pocket a good place for storing phones, etc. However, the inner side (touching your body) is not padded, which isn't a problem for me. So I think this was a good design decision.

Has bands for holding the extra strap out of the way

Cons:

The bigger compartment's zipper has a metal piece on the little loop, which adds a nice touch. However, the one on mine was a dark matte red instead of a grayish one that's shown in the picture. Doesn't look too bad, so I kept it instead of trying my luck with another. Plus, worst case, you can just take out the metal piece.

Summary:

I strongly recommend this. It's not the biggest pack, which is actually a plus for me. It is well-made and looks very nice.

This is the pack I have been looking for. It holds all of my things and it is not too bulky. Good construction and looks like it will last. I use it when I braid horses. The front compartment holds my phone and the larger one holds all of my tools...comb, brush, etc. I love it!!

Great bag. It has 2 main compartments, one in the front and one in the back. The compartment in the front has a couple of smaller pockets to put stuff inside, pretty simple layout. The straps are really comfortable and will never eat into your shoulders regardless of the content weight. I also had my bag on during slight rain with my DSLR inside. I was worried initially but when I found shelter, my camera and insides were still totally dry.

There was an accidental leakage of water from my bottle on another occasion as well, the insides dried up really fast and well. Great multi-purpose, or rather all-purpose bag for most weather conditions and comfort.

Just a slight edit for those interested in its durability. I've brought this bag out under heavy periods of rain with a DSLR (Canon 50D) and my laptop inside my bag. I was worried that the stuff inside would get wet so I kind of ran through the rain. The straps were sturdy and allowed me to move pretty fast with minimal obstruction.

Upon reaching my destination (which was sheltered) I unzipped the bag and found everything inside still toasty and dry. Great bag for any casual traveller.

I bought this for my 13 year old daughter who is a shadow fanatic. She loves anything to do with sonic and shadow. This product is holding up after abuse it gets from all the books it holds and it gets thrown around. Very sturdy. The price is reasonable. Great product for anyone who likes shadow the hedgehog.

Stephen Joseph Boys 2-7 Quilted Backpack

Within the first day of use, the zipper came off the track. There is no liner inside this, so there are strings everywhere. Considering it is toddler size, not child, toddlers pull strings and then you have a horrible mess because the quilting all comes undone. The applique is felt, it will not hold up over time, it was balling up within days too. The clasp to hold the bag closed has gotten stuck and now it won't close properly. These are cute but completely unusable and low quality.

This was purchased for my son as a gift from a friend. I had noticed it in several of the boutiques in the area but thought it may fade after a wash, so I never purchased one.

After quite a bit of use I washed it and it looks just as good as it did when we received the gift. The only thing is that the felt part of the train gets knots on it after the wash. I took a fuzz eater and took care of that.

It's a good little back pack for day use or trips to church. It's small but functional!

Hello Kitty Back Pack Style 15.4 Laptop Bag - Black KT4337B

I was looking for a bag that met these requirements:

1) cute, preferably Hello Kitty

2) a backpack with plenty of padding on the back and shoulder straps (I often have moderate to severe back pain, so a messenger bag is out of the question)

3) has a laptop compartment

4) has several compartments and pouches for pens/pencils/calculator/laptop accessories/etc

I couldn't tell by the picture, but this bag met all of these requirements. This is not a backpack for a small child; it is kind of large. Great for college. It seems to be of high quality, strong, and well made. I was very surprised by the padding on the back and straps. It has a headphone cord hole on the top, a mesh pouch on each side (I can fit a small umbrella in one of them), and a laptop pouch for exactly what it says 15.4". My 13" Macbook Air and Bamboo pad both fit inside of it. It has a section with lots of zippered pouches for writing utensils and other stuff, a keyring, a pouch for an mp3 player/phone, ID slit, cash pouch, etc., but it's not excessive. Exactly what I was looking for!

This is a great backpack for highschool/college students. It has a main compartment with the most space and a laptop sleeve against the back lining. The front compartment has a lot of zippers and small pockets to keep your smaller items in. It also has two loops to hold pens/mechanical pencils in horizontally at the top of the compartment so it's easy and quick to access your pen. Standard key ring is also in that compartment. Finally, it has a small zipper pocket on the very front which is good for holding campus maps or a small notebook for jotting down quick notes. Two mesh side pockets for small water bottles/umbrella, also. It's cute and sturdy with ample back padding. Great item.

Its not a big as most other backpack but that doesn't take away from this bag. I have a bad back from a car wreak and i am a nursing student who has some heavy stuff. What i do put it is so comfortable on my back. I carry a 14" laptop lab book textbook charger water bottle and zipper binder in it with pens and pencils and it is not packed tight. I love it.

Piranha Gear Uniform Bag / Backpack

I recently received this as a present after my old gear bag broke. This bag isn't for all your sparring gear (you should get a mesh one for that any way) but rather for all the other gear one carries. I use it to keep multiple gis in and wraps, braces... . There are two long pockets on the side which I find helpful and I keep belts in one and ankle braces and stuff in the other. The middle pocket is large enough for 2 gis and a change of clothes with plenty of room to spare. There is a mesh zippered pocket in the back of the middle section plus an open pocket behing it. I have always used a backpack for my gear bag but have found I like the single strap. The backpack straps stow away nicely for use later.

There are better gear bags on the market but not in this price range. This bag is the nicest in this price range and frankly you would have to spend 4x the amount to find something as nice.

Hopefully they will do an mesh type bag for sparring gear.

ON A IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT LEAVE YOUR SWEATY GIS IN YOUR BAG. yuck.
