OGIO Privateer Bag

I was very excited to get a new backpack. It fits my laptop just wonderfully. However I have had a terrible time fitting my laptop, a binder, and a textbook in the bag all at the same time. I have never gotten a water bottle to fit in the side stretch pouches. I no longer use half of the pockets because it just crept in on the interior spaces and I couldn't fit my books/binder in it. The zippers are pretty much ruined after one semester use. It does have a very convenient lined pouch on the top. Its a good bag if you don't plan on filling it completely up.

Let me just state that I love Ogio equipment. I own several of their small and medium luggage bags, one of their large luggage bags and a couple backpacks from previous jobs. I also travel a lot, every weekend from Feb to Nov. I bought this bag and first impressions were not that good. The quality didn't seem great and after about 4 weeks of using it there's a tear in the seem near the zipper. I didn't think it would last long and I wasn't surprised after I saw it. This is one of those cases where I wouldn't have bought it if I were able to get my hands on it before making a decision.

I bought this packback from Amazon for my daily 40mi commute. Shipping fee is always fair and items are recieved very quickly, even to Hawaii. The backpack has lots of separate compartments, but the compartments are all kinda small. I dont carry a laptop, so my rain gear takes up that space. The main pocket barely holds my soft lunch cooler. The very small bottle holders barely hold my small coffee thermos. Its a very nice and comfortable packback tho. The straps are nicely shaped and padded. The clip on the chest strap seems a little flimsy and is can be a little hard to clip together with gloves on. I still rate it pretty high because it does look great, its comfy, and it holds everything I need it to hold for my daily trip to work.

This is exactly what I needed, I am a college student and I have a 17" Dell Inspiron and it fits perfectly! It also leaves room for accessories, books and pleanty of room left. It has very good shoulder straps and very comfortable to wear with the weight of books and laptop!!

This is my second Ogio backup. My first one lasted through 3 laptops, so figured I would try this never model with my new laptop. What a great deal!!! It seems to be of the same sturdy construction and have all the features I was looking for. The top-opening laptop compartment works better for me than the side compartment, so that's a plus. Also, it's very comfortable to wear with a handy sternum strap. The only negative is the mini side compartments behind the water bottle / hydration pouches. I'm glad to have them because they are useful, but you can't put too much inside if you are going to have something in the bottle/hydration pouch; there's just limited space back there so something has to give. Other than that, it was worth every penny!

High Sierra Symmetry Frame Backpack

I've been using this for 5 months as my daily pack. It's the best pack I've had, but I've only had 2 other outdoors backpacks. The rigid support fits well and it just wears better than any other pack I've used. The zippers are tough and self-lock. It doesn't have 18 pockets more than I need. The reflective stripe on the front is good because I'm always on a motorcycle or bicycle.

The best part is the open front pouch. I stick food and water in there usually and it works out better than side pouches. Large things can be clipped into the pouch and it's very secure. Long things can stick through the bottom of the pouch. The one thing I didn't like was that the inside wasn't cushioned. But, it's meant to be a waterproof outdoor pack and I'm using it for books and everything. It's a little wider than my last snowboard packs but it fits and feels much better.

Perfect size and very well made. Flat profile makes it great for riding the on chair lift when I ski.

My son has been using this back pack for less than a month and both zippers have broken and there is a big hole in the bottom of the bag. My son is in 2nd grade so he does not carry much. I would not expect a three ring binder to make a big hole in the bottom after only 3 weeks of use. The bag looks great and has nice side pockets, but doesn't last.

This backpack was a birthday gift for my son... it was saved until the school year began so that he could use it, as Angry Birds are his passion. One of the main zippers broke on the first day of use, so he could only use the other zipper for it, which then broke of the 5th day of school. I didn't think that it wouldn't even survive a week of school and I am EXTREMELY disappointed with this purchase. 5.11 Rush 72 Back Pack

I'm an Army officer and this is one of the best packs on the market. It works as an all-purpose, large capacity travel bag and a rough tactical 3-day pack. The build quality is the best out there (1050 denier, stronger than 1650) with sturdy zippers. The multitude of zippered, mesh storage on the inside is GREAT. The cherry on top is its low profile when it's not filled. If you are only carrying a few things the bag stays thin and doesn't look like you are going camping at Starbucks.

Purchased this for an upcoming deployment (fourth OIF/OEF tour), so I knew what I was looking for, and this pack is it. Picking out the right ruck and getting it "right-sized" is difficult; too large and you're dragging around a piece of luggage; too small and you're tying gear to the outside, snagging it on everything. Quality was important to me as well & 5.11 has a very good reputation.

PROS:

First, I want to say I bought the updated Rush 72, from Amazon Warehouse deals as "Like New" When I got it, it had the tags, and it was clean but it contained some candles and a love letter. Apparently it was a Christmas gift turned back into Amazon with the gifts and notes inside. So, take note, buying used can produce some interesting results.

Now to the review. I have a CamelBak BFM 100oz Black that I have used for camping, a Bug Out Bag, traveling, and for military use. It's comfortable to wear, even with a heavy load of about 35 lbs, assembled in the USA, and made of Cordura, so why buy the RUSH 72? I was curious about it and I wanted to return the BFM to it's original role as a BOB.

So for this review I want to compare the two, so shoppers can understand the similarities and differences between them. So first they both are about the same size about 48L to 51L depending on what advertisement you use, but the RUSH 72 is a little taller. They both are well organized, and both have water repellant capabilities. Now let's look at the differences.

Pleae note, these are tactical backpacks so they are not good at holding books, folders, or computers, though they can do it of course.

The BFM 500:

It's assembled in USA, where as the RUSH is made in Vietnam. Camelbak uses Corudra, and 5.11 Tactical uses standard nylon. They both have outer pockets to hold MREs, Water bottles etc. but the BFM's stick out to the side, while the RUSH 72 are sleeker, going into the pack itself. I personally like the Camelbak's version better. It's easier to insert something in them, and they don't take up pack space. On the other hand the RUSH 72 it's difficult to insert something like an MRE, only cylinder shaped things like bottles fit well. Also, the BFM comes with a water bladder.

The RUSH 72:

It's function and capabilities are similar to the BFM. The BFM has better material, and a lot better craftsmanship (The RUSH 72 has some loose thread, and after seven weeks of use, shows signs of loosening. The Camelbak's threading holds much better in place.) Now, the RUSH 72 has a yoke for the shoulder straps which takes getting use too. In fact the RUSH 72 has a learning curve. You have to get comfortable with the feel of the yoke, and depending on your frame you may have to get used to the feel of the tucked away waist belt poking into your sides. After a while you don't notice them anymore. One thing I like though in the main compartment is that the RUSH 72 has a pocket for holding a laptop computer, or radio. The BFM uses straps instead. One thing I don't really like is the RUSH's spill over compartment. If you have a helmet or something it's good to have, but in daily use it just gets in the way. You have to use all the buckles to hold it down, or it will flop open. This also means it's slower to open, close, and keep stable. It's hard to describe but look at a picture of the RUSH and you'll understand. My solution was to have some Velcro attached to hold it tighter in place.

What's the same?

The water repellant material on both packs works well, but I might have to give the nod to the RUSH. Both packs have been in rain storms, but I would say, using anecdotal evidence the RUSH 72 kept my belongings more dry. Both packs have a rear top pocket. On the BFM it's big enough for gloves, night vision equipment, etc. but it has no mesh compartments for small items. On the other hand the RUSH's top compartment is so small it's useless for gloves, and such items. However it has mesh pockets for holding small items. If only the best of both packs were used to make a big rear top pocket with a nice mesh pocket.

The Verdict

It depends on what you want. For quality it's Camlebak. For military application I like the BFM better actually. The outside pockets hold bulky items better, and the rear top compartment is big and useful. For my civilian travels I like the RUSH 72 better. The inside radio/laptop pocket holds my computer well, and keep it dry, and the rear top pocket with mesh is good for holding my iPod, and other miscellaneous items. The fleece lined eye glass holder is okay, but becomes near useless if the main compartment is full.

This bag was worth every penny. I'm USAF Security Forces, and after my last bag (MOLLE 3 Day Military Assault Pack Backpack OD Green) fell apart during my deployment, I decided it was time to look into the names of companies I knew about. That brought me to 5.11, and eventually the 72 pack. I take between 40 and 70 pounds of gear to work everyday, so I need a bag that can withstand punishment, and give me peace of mind knowing that it's not gonna break and send my gear everywhere. After I received the bag, I filled it up, and I still have room for more gear. The nylon feels tough as nails, the handle on the top of the bag feels as strong as they 5.11 claims (2,000 pound breaking point), and it is THE most comfortable bag I have ever carried. Even with my flak vest and LBE on, this bag is still comfortable enough to make me feel like I could ruck for days. The only downside I've come to notice is the tendency for the bag to want to tip forward when I put it on the ground. So, I just attached my IFAK to the lower MOLLE on the front, and fixed the issue. 5.11 came through once again, and this bag has brought me to the conclusion that I will be purchasing anything else I need like this in the future.

Osprey FlapJack Men's Courier Shoulder Bag

I like this bag a LOT. Heck, I like this company a lot. I think they could take the Pepsi challenge with Eagle Creek and Timbuk 2 for quality, design and service. I also looked at the Timbuk 2 Command, and Thule Crossover.

I've had this bag for a few months now, and I use it every day for work, however, I've not used it while riding a bike yet.

It is well designed, with great build quality (durable materials, stitching and fasteners), and it looks sweet. I would call it "sporty professional."

There is not a lot of detailed info for this bag on Amazon or Osprey, so I'll elaborate for anyone who cares...

Design comments:

One main flap covering entire interior of bag.

Main pocket is open and roomy with a padded slot (sized for laptop, manilla folders, w/ velcroed tab closure), a zippered lightly padded pocket (sized for tablet, 8.5x11s), and flexible, unstructured remaining space (sized for shell/jacket + soft lunch bag, 14" legal docs). I have been able to easily fit a 18" tall roll of drawings fully into this pocket (at a diagonal). There is a small handle inside the main pocket.

Zippered Pockets: one on main flap/cover (size of compact disc), one on side of bag (insulated coffee mug), two accessory pockets in front of bag (under flap), one (tablet & 8.5x11 papers) inside main pocket.

Mesh elastic pockets: one inside aforementioned "coffee mug" pocket (sized for coins plus smart phone), one inside main compartment (2 travel umbrellas).

Miscellaneous: 1st accessory front pocket: 6x8, w/ key clip; 2nd larger accessory pocket: 8x10, 2 open slots (one large smartphone, one iPod classic), 2 pen slots.

Back of bag has fully adjustable & removable 1/2" webbing w/ fastex buckles. With this you can secure bag around waist while riding bike, or secure bag to rolling luggage handle.

Bag has tendency to stay upright and not fall over, if contents are evenly distributed. Bottom of bag is relatively flat.

Flap can be secured to main bag body in two ways: two typical "fastex" click buckles on outside of flap and velcro. (Amazon blowhard comment: I covered the velcro flap with a 2" x 4" piece of loose velcro to prevent the flap from continuously grabbing).

Bag handle: very comfortable.

Shoulder strap: pad is very comfortable, has grippy/tacky surface and slides along main strap. Strap has ingenious single-action clasp for quick and effortless adjustment.

Aesthetic comments: Bag has black (well, not the blackest black, closer to a dark, slate grey) body with reflective accents, and medium grey straps. It has a lime green liner, which provides contrast to the pockets. (Amazon blowhard comment: I didn't expect the green interior, and wouldn't be my first choice, but I got used to it). Exchangeable accent color straps for main flap cover buckles.

Cons: A bit weak on the amount of information/pictures available on this product, including Osprey's own site was lacking. Frankly, I felt a bit uneasy buying it without more photographic/descriptive info, but I felt comfortable with Osprey's track record.

I have no real concerns about this bag, and highly recommend it.

Bought this bag as a replacement for my Osprey Astro. I really liked the Astro, but its getting a bit grubby and I wanted something which wouldn't look too out of place in a business environment.

Overall, I really want to like it the bag itself is a pretty nice design, internal and external pockets are mostly well laid out, and the handle is very sturdy and comfortable (much better than the handle on the Astro).

My main gripe however is with the length of the shoulder strap why is it so short? I'm not especially tall, about 5'9", but with the strap fully extended the top of the bag still sits quite a bit above my hip, somewhat higher than I would prefer for this kind of messenger style bag. Someone with a larger build may find the bag sits even higher.

Would it have been so hard to allow a bit more leeway in the shoulder strap length? A couple more inches would have been better. The strap length on the Astro was pretty much perfect.

Also, one feature I really liked on the Astro which is missing on the Flapjack is the top zipper which allows access the the main compartment without having to open the main flap this really is incredibly handy and the one feature which would have made this bag just about perfect.

The only other comment I have is about the side pocket it has one zipped side pocket on the left hand side. I would have liked to have another pocket like this on the right hand side as well.

Other than these points, its a very nice bag and I'm pretty satisfied with it.

You won't find quality like an Osprey product anywhere else on the market. Sometimes the price tags for their bags can be a little intimidating but understand that you are hands down buying some of the material craftsmanship available. This stuff lasts and can take a serious beating, it's almost as if it has permanent Scotchguard protecting all of the fabric. This is the second Osprey bag I've purchased, my first being the Veer. I've always been amazed at the quality of their products and this is no exception.

This bag in particular is extremely spacious, you'll be amazed by what you can cram in this thing and still be left with space. I load it up in the morning with my laptop, charging cables, various odds and ends of gadgets, a 2 liter jug of water, a 32oz coffee mug, a 32oz tea mug, and it's still ridiculous easy to close with plenty of extra room available in the exterior pockets and inner compartments.

I wasn't sure if i'd like the open flap approach of the bag but now it's probably my favorite feature. Getting access to things is snappy and often times you can just pull the side of the flap in and access something from the side without need to even open up the top. The velcro is often times more than enough to secure a heavy load, employing a thick strip which gives a strong grip. This bag is secure and if you take the time to buckle the front flap you won't have to worry about things falling out, even if it tips over.

If you've been going back and forth between bag purchases, or messenger bags in particular, take it from someone who went through many and did his homework: this is the one to get.

Nice looking and high-quality materials. However, not optimal for carrying work papers because it is not structured and contents can get squished. There is a small exterior zipper compartment, but accessing the interior creates a very loud "velcro" noise. If you are in a quiet library or office--people will definitely know when you open your bag. Nonetheless, I give it four stars because it's a good travel bag that holds a lot.

I used this bag for my trip to Seattle. It's a bit wider than I would like for school but it's perfect for traveling. My laptop, a couple books and my headphones fit in the large compartment, but also a doughnut pillow (that's what I call them) and a large scarf I use as a blanket on flights.

I like that it was a mesh pocket in the large compartment for a water bottle so that it's not exposed on the outside. and it was a mesh zippered compartment for documents.

It's super comfortable to wear on your shoulders. I was debating on getting a timbuk2 bag but I tried one on in seattle and i found that those bags are too stiff (maybe just when they're brand new), the shoulder pad is stiffer and not as comfortable (again), and the design of the pockets are kinda silly (at least to my taste)

overall I'm pretty happy with this bag. I got the chili red and i love the color

If you are looking for a school or overnight backpack, this is NOT the one for you. The bag itself is comfortable to wear. The material is good quality and the added pockets are really nice. However, there is not a whole lot of room (as mentioned by others). I use this for a gym bag an find it holds my items needed (shoes, water, towel and a few other misc) perfectly. Would highly recommend.

This bag feels well made, especially considering the price. The cellphone pocket is conveniently placed, and the bag sits comfortably on my back. We loaded it up (relative to it's size) for a 14 mile bike ride and it worked very well. It doesn't have any sort of mesh netting on the back of the bag, so your back will probably get pretty sweaty after a while.

I use this bag when riding my unicycle, its not too big and cumbersome and holds enough for what I need on rides. The cell phone pocket on the front is large enough to hold a Droid Razr Maxx in an otter box case. It's strap is not super thickly padded and is still comfortable to wear for prolonged times. The mesh pocket on the side holds standard sized water bottles and the headphone pocket is placed to easily wear your earbuds.

The two main compartments are not that large though and will conflict with each other if you try to put a lot in the backpack. So if you plan on carrying many items(about 4+ textbooks or notebooks) at one time I would look for something a bit larger.

As far as what I use it for, I would say its an excellent bag for outdoor activities. For the price I would say this an excellent buy. Waiting to see how it holds up in the long run.

Tamrac 3380 Aero 80 Photo/Laptop Backpack (Rust)

I bought this backpack for a recent photographic assignment to India where I had to carry my laptop with me at all times. Overall, I am very impressed with it and several people I was traveling with were also impressed enough that they were planning to buy the same backpack when they got back to the States.

The main reason I chose this product was that it would be able to accommodate my DSLR with standard zoom lens, two spare lenses (including one 300mm telephoto) a small video camera (with five tapes), spare batteries and filters, power cables etc., and my laptop as well as providing some space for other items such as sweaters, papers etc.

It certainly has the capacity I needed and the lower section of the backpack that accommodates all the camera gear is easy to access, easy to organise and generally very well designed. The only complaint I have is that the upper section of the rucksack is quite difficult to access not so bad that it's unusable, but I did end up simply stuffing things in there because the design of the opening is such that the flap doesn't really fold down. I managed to fit in a down vest, a flashlight, a couple of energy bars, some papers and my sunglasses but I had to pretty much empty the whole compartment to find anything I wanted. The laptop sleeve, on the other hand, provides plenty of space and you can store papers, magazines etc in there along with the laptop (as long as you can stand the extra weight!) The two side pockets are perfect for water/soda bottles, too, which is good because you wouldn't be able to get at them in the main compartment!

I didn't use it in the rain, so I have no idea whether its weatherproofing works. It certainly looks like it should, but the rubber strips on the laptop sleeve zip do make opening and closing that compartment a little fiddly. None of these issues would prevent me recommending this backpack though, as it really does do everything I wanted it to do. I didn't hike with it for any distance but it certainly performed well being thrown in and out of trucks and buses and seemed to provide excellent protection for my gear in some pretty uncomfortable environments.

One other note if you're a bit of a contortionist, you can access your camera without removing the backpack. It's probably not advisable unless you're sure the rest of your gear won't come tumbling out when you open the flap but it does add a little extra functionality that you might need.

I like this overall. I'm a pro photographer and needed something that fits easily in overhead bins in planes. there's enough room for 2 bodies, laptop, 2 hyperdrives, 5 lenses (med size), all my chargers, lots of batteries, a flash head, and some misc stuff. you have to get creative but you can get quite a bit in there. it's probably not meant for what I use it for (primary bag) but it works well

I bought this simply for the fact that I can carry my laptop along with my camera equipment. First off, it must be said that you can carry one camera body with a mounted lens and battery grip, two more lenses and a flash unit. You might be able to squeeze one more body, depending on the size though. Other photographers may find this limiting. But the other accessories like your cd's, power supplies, batteries and other lenses and such will fit in the other main compartment. I do wish however that one of the inside pockets did not have a stitched divider. I would have prefered a larger section to place larger items, but those items fit in the other areas. The laptop section is nice and you can squeeze the electrical power cord in the same area. The main reason I bought this is that when I travel, I no longer have to carry a seperate laptop case and camera equipment case on a plane. When I had these two items, I had to sacrifice a personal item in which I would carry snacks and other items. By combining a laptop case and camera case into one, I know can have a persnal carry on item on the plane again. The only drawback some photographers may face is that there is no tripod slot. But other than that, I'm happy with this back pack and would definitely recommend it to my fellow photographers.

On a recent trip to New York I figured I would order a new camera bag and get rid of my old Samsonite shoulder bag, which has been through all the rigors associated with Photojournalism in the Caribbean. I have switched my occupation to a far less intense photography experience and just wanted something small (ish), lightweight and capable for carrying around my camera (s), lenses, flash guns and macbook, with charger and accessories.

Ok first the bad.

The bag is a heck of a lot smaller than I expected and cannot hold my EOS 30D with 70-200 F4/L lens attached. This is not a huge deal since I normally mount an old 28-70 F/2.8L, but still, sometimes it would be nice to just whip out my camera with the longer lens attached.

Now the good.

The bag is good looking. It is sturdy as ever, and I manage to fit two flash guns, three lenses (albeit the 70-200 does not go in the camera section with the rest of the kit and gets bunged in the main bag with the flash guns) Two camera bodies (30D and 20D), a Macbook 13" laptop, charger, mouse, headphones, cables, and granola bars and the shoulder straps, and top handle don't ever feel like they are going to give way under the weight.

Additionally this is a great bag for travelling and fits very easily in front of you under the seat or in an overhead compartment. For my purposes this was more important than having the extra space for more kit and having to worry about whether I have to check in my camera kit.

So if you are looking at this bag, be aware that there are better, more spacious bags available, but ensure that if you travel a lot, they will not impede you from overhead compartments on the airlines you tend to use.

Thule Crossover 38-Litre Rolling Carry-On

Anytime a company makes something that does more than one thing, you're going to find a collection of compromises, and Thule's suitcase is a perfect example. Thule made their Crossover brand of suitcase a combination carry-on rolling suitcase and a backpack. In doing so, they made a very comfortable backpack, but they sacrificed some internal storage to do so.

Before discussing the compromises, let's dig into the overall build quality, which is great. The wheels are big and solid, with sturdy metal axels that should keep it rolling straight. The outside material looks thick and durable, and Thule states that it is water repellent. The zippers look strong and zip without snagging, although they are not water resistant. The backpack straps have metal hardware that should wear well. The suitcase is also properly weighted so that it doesn't easily fall over when you set it down or bump into it (this is a pet peeve of mine). Also, the overall suitcase looks professional, so it would be easy to take on a business trip as well as a vacation.

Okay, now for the compromises to make this thing into a backpack. First, the backpack straps are in a compartment with much more room than they seem to need, which means that there is less room for packing your belongings. This extra room has its advantages, though, because the backpack is VERY comfortable because this area naturally forms into my back (I'm 6'1" and about 165 lbs). The straps pull out easily, too, because of this extra room, and they quickly attach to the sides of the suitcase. The straps are also placed on the opposite side from the wheels, so you won't get your clothes dirty. My only reservation with the straps is that they attach BEFORE the zipper, which means that they will pull on the zipper over time. I'm not sure if this will turn out to be a design flaw, but it's worth stating.

So the primary disadvantage to the suitcase is the room necessary for the backpack and the extra-sturdy wheels. I was easily able to fit three pairs of jeans, three shirts, three t-shirts, four pairs of socks and four boxers into the main compartment. The side compartments could probably hold a couple more pairs of jeans plus toiletries and a book or so. It's not a lot compared to other carry-ons I've used, so if you're looking for a lot of room, this probably won't be your ideal suitcase.

In summary, this is an ideal suitcase for me. I like the sturdy hardware and the little touches that show that someone really thought about how to make a great combination suitcase/backpack. (There's a special inset designed just to hold large goggles for skiing, for example.) This backpack was made for the part-time adventure traveler who likes to pack light and move fast. If this doesn't describe you, then you may not like this suitcase as much as I do.

UGH-O a cross-over bag that is a carry-on bag with wheels and doubles as a backpack; this can't be good. So I take it out of the box, quality is excellent but I expect nothing less from Thule. The bag is very nice, material made very well and says it's water repellent. Water repellent huh, we'll see about that. Took the bag outside, turned on the hose and let me kids have at it! After 5-10 minutes; YUP its water repellent. The overall functionality is excellent, wheels: perfect, construction of the bag perfect. The bag will not easily tip over. The backpack strap has metal hardware so it should last for a while. Very professional looking and very easy on the eyes so you can use this piece for business and personal.

If you don't know how to pack, this suitcase is not for you. If you're a heavy packer, this suitcase is not for you. This suitcase is perfect for me. I pack light on my business trips so I need something that looks great, maneuvers well, can turn into a backpack when I want, take a beating and can fit in an overhead compartment on a plane.

I guess I expected more from a Thule product. First off, even though it is called a carry-on, it may not fit in to the guidelines of several airlines due to its dimensions it's a little too wide and tall. Second,in my opinion, it has one major design flaw: when you unzip it, there is a slope to it. Basically, one side of the compartment is taller than the other. When it's zipped you don't notice it because the cover is built the same way so overall you get the same size all around, but it makes it difficult to pack. You can't shove things in because there isn't necessarily a side to hold it in. Also, while the dimensions are slightly bigger than another traditionally shaped (21") carry-on that I have, this one actually holds less! This is really only good for a weekend trip, and for that I still think a duffle bag would hold more and take up less space overall. I definitely expected better from this.

This suitcase has some great features for travel through airports and on airplanes: large wheels that roll well, easy to raise and lower handle, easy to grasp handle on the case to pick up, alternative backpack straps (that are not too difficult to figure out), outside protected compartments for laptap and glasses/ipod/blackberry type devices, large inner compartment and mesh compartment that are padded. I have used it with the extended handle as a roller bag which is its best suited use; I have also found it works pretty well when picked up and used as a backpack for shorter lengths.

The weak points are the backpack straps get in the way of accessing the laptop compartment and need to be moved out of the way--not a big problem but prevents a 5-star rating. I also wish it had a way to strap loose articles in the inner compartment like books, etc. It is a little heavy to use regularly as a backpack for long periods of time and the protective shell makes it a little uncomfortable as a backpack.

I think I definitely be happy with this suitcase for travel, and it will be adequate for daily use with my laptop and book, notebooks and stuff.

The dvd user's guide is worthless; it is 57 seconds of an ad for the suitcase without any helpful ways to use it. The instruction brochure is also useless in offering help. Using the backstraps took a minute to figure out but is not difficult.

I purchased this carry-on based on the quality of a Thule Crossover 56L rolling duffel I own. That bag has made six trips to France so far and, except for a few scratches on the aluminum fittings, it looks like new. The wheels and handle and zippers are rock solid, and if you don't like the big silver Thule logo on the bag, it's easy to identify when it comes tumbling down the baggage conveyor.

I've only made one airline trip with this bag, but I'm pleased so far. Because it has a slightly rounded shape and the compartment for the backpacking straps takes up a little space, the 38L doesn't hold as much as a typical 22" carry-on. The available space is fine for my purposes, and it holds more than it looks like it will, but if maximum stowage is your goal, this may not be your solution. The rounded shape makes it easy to stash in overhead storage bins, however, and my only wish is that the straps could be removed and a bit of storage reclaimed for those times when you know you won't be carrying it.

The 38L is probably not for everyone but my experience with Thule Crossover luggage has been great and I recommend it highly. Unlike a lot of department store luggage brands, Thule products don't seem to be discounted much, but I found this one for about 30% off on Amazon. So shop around.

I ordered three rolling back packs for my children to use in the airport as their carryon item. The one was for my 5.5 year old. It was easy for him to pull and carry. It had ample amount of storage space and he loved the angry birds design. That said it was less quality than the other two back packs I purchased. There was no where for the straps to be put away so they dragged on the floor when it was rolling. Since we were moving the day after I received it I couldn't do an exchange, but the front design was ripped upon arrival. Now the whole front pocket is ripped as well and the back pack has had limited use. It was the only angry birds in space pack that I could find and it's really sad how poor the quality is. If design isn't important go with a a different pack.

This bag is very pretty. I get lots of compliments on it. I love it for quick trips out and about. However, I've resorted to my old backpack to hold everything needed for the day at daycare. There is no zipper under the flap, closes with just one snap, but if you have even a little too much in there it will not snap and things can fall out! It was on crazy sale, so I do not regret having it and use it on the weekends, but if I'd paid full retail for it I'd probably be disappointed.

Some said that the straps are not good quality but I think they are good.
