The bag is not rigid like most Tumi bags. It's actually on the floppy side so it molds to your body very well and it's very comfortable.

Unlike many high-end packs, this has soft material that makes it easy to jam in those hard to fit areas. It has just the right amount of pockets for personal items and no wasted space with compartments that simply take up too much space. It's a bit pricey but it's a Tumi and I am very pleased! It has every feature that I wanted and needed and could paid a lot more and still not have the features.

This is so close to being a great bag that it is frustrating.

If you are using this to lug stuff around at home for work or school, you could frankly get the same functionality cheaper. If you really want this for plane and train travel, then this is a compromise.

Pros:

1) It has good handles and converts to a backpack

2) Conversion is easy enough

3) Using as backpack reasonably comfortable (I am 50yrs old , 5 ft 2 and 110 lbs, so that gives you some idea that is is not just comfortable for strapping young athletes). You are not going to want to do any hiking or long walks, but if you have anything else to wheel and this on your back (or terrain where wheeling is impractical or lost of stairs) you can tolerate this.

4) Also has built in place on the back to go over the handle of another suitcase with a handle, so it is very flexible.

5) Laptop compartment ok wasn't really enough padding, but there WAS padding in one of the other compartments you can use. Convenient to get laptop in and out at checkpoints

6) Durable (I travel internationally 4-5 times a year and domestically about 5-10 times per year) it has held up well for a year, although the handle is starting to go now.

Cons:

1) The handle is too short, even for me. Also not adjustable at all.

2) The compartments are all organized in a weird way. It sounds like I am being picky, but this will really grate on your nerves trust me. There is a lot of empty space in the bottom angled back that you can stuff things into but only if you REALLY stuff them. This is inconvenient, you can't find or access your items and everything is mushed.

3) There is a lot of wasted space around the handle. This is a shame with a small plastic divider, you could easily fit cords, chargers, umbrella and other small or narrow items and that wouldn't add much weight to the design.

4)It is pretty heavy when empty (the SAKS is much lighter when empty).

5) it fits in overhead bins on larger planes but NOT on some puddle jumpers it should do according to the measurements, but it simply does not.

5) The pockets in front are kind of useless. The bag is so funnel shaped that what seems like good organization and useful features turn out to be squished and not usable.

6) Does not fit as much stuff as it size would indicate because of the shape. You MIGHT manage to stuff your jacket in there with your kindle and phone charge etc, but you would never be able to wear it.

It doesn't seem like an impossible request to have luggage that can actually travel. Wheels are great, but not on stairs. If you travel by limo ( in which case someone else is carrying your bag) you don't need these things, but if you have to take a shuttle, train, get to long term parking, move about a campus or city once you reach your destination then we need to be actually mobile. We need shoulder handles and backpack straps people.

I got this backpack as a gift from my sister and I can't say enough how happy I am with it. I fly a lot for work and I also walk to work a mile a day. Whether I wear is as a backpack or roll it behind me it is a breeze to use. Prior to owning this pack, I had to lug around an uncomfortable laptop case provided by work that was really killing my back.

It fits a 15" dell with room to spare, it can fit quite a bit of things and fit in the overheads in small jets. It is simply perfect for me. My coworker bought one 2 weeks later seeing how awesome it is.

I wanted this item for a cell phone to go into a purse. Didn't want the traditional cell phone cover and this worked perfectly. Protects the phone great. I love the drawstring bags idea! This one is amazing! A little on the large size for my 6 year old, ( I have seen others that are smaller, so check dementions)but we both use it for trips to the park, the zoo, bike rides, picnics, just about everything. I really like the thickness of the rope cords on this one, very sturdy feeling to it, not thin and flimsy. The zipper pocket in front is a must for keys, wallet and cell phone, and what really sold me on this bag over the others was a very simple concept , but missed by most other bags... THE MESH SIDE POCKETS! PERFECT for just about any type of sport drink bottle/water bottle ( around 24 oz or a little larger, not the big gateraide bottles , of course) and it fits well and tight. I love it, I cant seem to find an excuse not to take it everywhere. The only problem is the compartment size. If you want to travel with it, be warned! It holds next to nothing. For schoolstuff there is enough space, but for anythin more than 3 tshirts and shorts it will be full.

I use this not only as a backpack but also as luggage on my 07 ninja 250. I can't understand the idea of using it while snowboarding in waste deep powder in the North Cascades. It doesn't meet any backcountry needs such as the ability to hold a shovel and avalanche probe. Also could you imagine riding a lift with it? Nope. But thats not why i bought it. This is a really really handsome bag. The photos definitely don't do it justice. If you want a bag that protects your back, looks awesome, and will stand out in a crowd, look no further. This bag is a CE-Certified Level 2 (highest level) back protector, and I don't think I've ever had as many compliments or questions about anything I've owned as I've had with this bag.

One caveat: This bag really doesn't hold all that much. It'll take a laptop, one or two textbooks, and maybe a few other assorted trinkets. It does expand a couple of inches if you need it to, but I wouldn't count on this bag as a serious option for carrying more than a few books around.

Case Logic GBP-116 16-Inch Laptop Backpack (Red)

OH MY GOD. That's the only way I can describe this backpack! It's the sickest backpack ever! It carries laptops, it carries books, it carries the hopes and dreams of a nation struggling through an economic crisis and war. If I were to chose a word to describe the enormous quality of this backpack, it would be Googleplex. My teenage girlfriend used to be pregnant, then she put on this backpack, and her period came. No more baby. This backpack man, this backpack.

This backpack was absolutely perfect for me! The straps are comfortable, there are many little pockets to put things in, and its sooooo pretty in this color. The only negative about it is that you might not be able to fit everything in it that you want. the MOST I could fit was my laptop, a 3-ring binder (the 2inch ones), a textbook, the cords for my laptop, and a notebook. I'm a college student, & that was the perfect size for me... some students may not feel the same, though. Overall fantastic!

I ride my bike to the gym/work during the warmer months (Michigan weather... don't get me started) and I trust this to protect my work laptop. The pocket intended for laptop use is the part that rests against your back, which is nice because if you've got a laptop in there you don't have to worry about any uneven pressure points on your back.

The hardware is also very substantial. For instance, the main pocket's zipper is probably close to a half-inch thick and zips very smoothly. I get the sense there's no breaking that. Also it comes with velcro stoppers that roll up and keep in place the extra strap length, so as a biker I never have those nylon straps flapping in the wind.

Other reviews have said it was smaller than they had expected, but on its first use here's what I fit in it no problem:

A change of clothes, including a pair of shoes

A 15" Macbook Pro

A makeup bag fit in the front pocket -about the dimensions of an iPad but 4x as thick

Keys, wallet & cell phone

A full size hairspray bottle

A lean cuisine

And the bag was by no means bulking under the strain of containing these items. I think that the only thing you'd have trouble fitting in is more than maybe one or two huge books. A lot of the bag's space isn't width-wise, and my items were the kind that could be packed anywhere.

When I got it... it looked a little small but once I started packing my laptop, charger, books, tablet & supplies everything fit with a little more room left over than I expected!

It is sturdy & seems well stitched, a lot of padding on the shoulder straps for a comfortable wear.

It's canvas, it's black, it's a backpack. There's not really a whole lot to say about it, in my opinion. It works for what I need, I find it comfortable, and it's very roomy. I used it as my carry-on luggage for a recent weekend trip and it performed quite well.

The only thing I can think to note about this pack is that it is a giant lump of cloth. There is nothing to give it any sort of shape or frame, save for what you put in it. So if the pack isn't full, it can sit rather limply and may pose an issue for whatever you are attempting to haul. A laptop, for example, would be a nightmare in this thing unless you had lots of other stuff to keep it from moving around.

I got this backpack for light hiking, but is not very well made. The protective tips on the straps started falling off even before I use it. Also the seams were the straps are connected to the backpack are defective, at least on mine. Overall I can say that is not well made, don't expect it to last very long, but of course is cheap, so you get what you paid for.

This bag is awesome! The canvas is very rugged. The stitching appears to be very strong and durable. If I had to say one critical thing it's that the item description is more accurate to the color than the picture. It looks almost brown in the picture, but it is definitely black (which is what i wanted anyway). Each of the canvas ruck-type bags on amazon have some glaring issue or another but this one definitely was the better choice.

The bag is made well and the main storage compartment is very large. The laptop compartment has no padding so I would not trust it with my expensive laptop. Also the insulated sleeve does not really keep anything hot or cold very well. Also I wish the bag had a few more compartments...maybe a smaller one on the front of the bag.

While i like the look of the bag, it has a few problems. The strap is very cheap looking and shiny. The metal loop holding the strap in place bent within a day of normal use (My laptop is heavy, but not THAT heavy), making the strap useless. The laptop sleeve is also not padded at all. I was very disappointed in this, and am returning it.

The color and material of the bag when it arrived are what I had expected. It had a long enough strap and I enjoyed it while it lasted. It lasted a little less than a year, and with light use, not an every day use. The stitching on the bag where the shoulder strap connected tore. While the bag was fairly inexpensive, I expected it to last a couple years with light use. I had a different every day work bag for my laptop. I used this one as a carry on while I traveled or visited friends.

Boblbee Megalopolis Sport Hardshell Backpack

I got one of these before there was a different "Sport" and "Executive" (or "Aero") version, but basically the "Sport" version is the same as my original Megalopolis. I was doing a lot of flying with a laptop back then and I wanted something that would protect the laptop and could be effective for carry-on. It performed well without much fuss through 15 cross-country flights, with the added Boblbee Lumbar Cassette to hold extra clothes and accessories. I am also a bicycle rider and I used this pack to commute several times a week for a year or so. I still use it almost daily today, for workout clothes and hiking and walking around the city shopping (my bike these days is a recumbent and backpacks don't really work well on it.) It's still my only backpack.

Advantages:

Flexible (as you can tell from my description above) especially with the extra accessories

Comfortable to wear, even in heat and with heavier loads

Protects contents well. Only time I've had a chance to test this, I dropped my bicycle turning onto a wet wood bridge and landed on my side and back. My laptop was fine but the impact was hard enough to crack the shell of the Boblbee, the crack being about 2" long on the corner of the shell lip. Despite this crack the backpack still performs pretty well though I don't wear it on the bike anymore, as I'm not sure it will protect as well in another fall.

Longevity. I've never had a pack that I've been able to use this long. Nine years of service!

Issues:

It's not the largest backpack or carry-on travel bag you can buy; the extra cassette attachment provides a lot more storage but it's compartmentalized and can be tricky to pack a lot of stuff for a weekend trip.

Though protective to its contents, the glossy paints on the shell can scratch if you're not careful. The color of mine is blue but the plastic under it is a slightly different blue so a scratch is visible. I suspect the matte black ones would be better for this. After 9 years there are a fair number of scratches on mine but that's to be expected.

Over the years the top cover has frayed a bit where the edges of the shell push against the top fabric, and the pocket on top actually has some small holes in it. Mostly I believe this is from handling and storage (in car boots and luggage carriers) than on-the-back usage. The other models like the Executive and Aero seem to have protection for this.

It will *not* stand up with its top up because of the shape. You'll always have to lean it against your leg or hold it up when opening and closing it. With the lumbar cassette it can potentially balance upright but it's tricky.

The zipper pulls on the lumbar cassette broke off after 6 years of occasional use (I didn't always have the lumbar cassette attached).

The sternum strap snap-close broke on me early on. That's the only fastener part that I had trouble with, all the rest of the fasteners are still functional.

The connection of the shell and the harness portions at the bottom of the bag is only a pressure fit via two large screw-bolts; that is all that keeps the bottom "sealed" so if these get loose, very small objects (smaller than a coin) can find their way out of the bag. On the other hand, if you got water in it, it would drain out the bottom.

People keep asking me if I ride a motorcycle or if it's part of a motorcycle I've turned into a backpack. A small inconvenience!

Tips:

The attachment points on the back of the pack are great even without the official accessories; any 1" or smaller strap can be attached.

Don't pack the top zipper pocket until you have the rest of the bag packed, if the main pack is stuffed full it's hard to remove and insert items in the top zipper.

Be careful walking through crowds, swift turns can result in the backpack hitting other people and it can bruise someone easily, especially the points at the bottom.

The bolts holding the fabric to the back along the rails can actually get loose over several years, but they're easy to tighten up.

This product is a very nice product, and I have been looking fot the product everywhere until I get it from Amazon.

One thing that dissapointed me was I received the product not in a very good condition with some sctracth on the hard case.

But overall, the product is doing just fine.

I would have bought this bag if I could find out what size it actually is. I see no way to contact the seller to ask this question. I find this frustrating. This looks like a nice product. I need a bag that is approximately at least 12" high x 10" or 11" wide. This bag might be smaller and would not work for what I need.

SOLO Classic Collection Laptop Backpack for 17.3-Inch Notebook Computers (CLA705-4)

I was pleasantly surprised at how well my ASUS 17.3" laptop fit in this backpack. Despite the laptop's size, which is big even for 17.3" standards I think, the bag does a great job of storing the laptop. It fits in there snug but easily pulls in and out. Lots of other useful storage compartments, too. I have yet to take the bag on a trip, so not sure what the durability factor is in those terms, but I would imagine it holds up well at airports or on long car rides.

I bought this backpack for my son to put his ASUS 17.3" gaming laptop into. And it does fit! This bag doesn't seem to be very large at first glance, but my son can put his laptop, his xBox, a controller or two, and all cables into this bag all at the same time. He also carries two CD cases for his games and a mouse for his laptop in this bag. I am just amazed at how much fits into it.

The bag seems to be very well constructed. I will update this review if we find any problems, but so far, it is a wonderful find.

My work computer was updated to an HP with a 17.3" screen. Since the laptop is over 7 lbs. by itself I like the fact that the bag is very light. This bag will hold two of them. It also has smaller sleeves for iPads, Kindles, etc. In my opinion the only things lacking are smaller pockets for items like phones, wallets, etc. There are small pockets for pens, business cards and such but I would like something larger. A key ring and exterior water bottle holder would also be a nice addition.

This is a very sturdy bag with wonderful pockets and compartments. I love it and I trust it to carry my 17" Dell laptop. Be forewarned however: this is a big bag. That said, its is perfect: resilient, multiple compartments, multiple pockets, comfortable and room in it for everything. Awesome bag. Highly recommended even if you don't have a 17" laptop.
